For The Record
We've discussed a lot about the fact that Tony Granto and Joel Quenneville have each had to deal with a considerable number of injuries during their tenure behind the Avalanche bench.
Just for kicks, here's the record for both Granato and Quenneville with and without Joe Sakic and Paul Stastny over the last two seasons. Interestingly, Sakic has missed all but one game that Stastny has missed since SOS joined the Avs - a loss to Edmonton on March 22nd, 2008 that Stastny skipped due to the flu.
| Granato | GP | W | L | OTL | Win% |
| w/Sakic | 15 | 7 | 8 | 0 | 0.467 |
| w/o Sakic | 67 | 25 | 37 | 5 | 0.373 |
| w/Stastny | 45 | 20 | 23 | 2 | 0.444 |
| w/o Stastny | 37 | 12 | 22 | 3 | 0.324 |
| Quenneville | |||||
| w/Sakic | 44 | 26 | 16 | 2 | 0.591 |
| w/o Sakic | 38 | 18 | 15 | 5 | 0.474 |
| w/Stastny | 66 | 39 | 23 | 4 | 0.591 |
| w/o Stastny | 16 | 5 | 8 | 3 | 0.313 |
I'll leave it up to you guys to draw the necessary conclusions.

Didn’t they both have periods with both Sakic and Stats…PLUS Smyth out?
I’ll let the numbers speak for themselves
yes, but Smyth missed just 5 games this year, so that’s too small of a sample size (and my small brain can’t handle all the complexities of adding a 3rd person to the mix)

Granato had a 0.094 drop in win % w/o Sakic and a 0.120 w/o Stastny.
Quenneville had a 0.117 drop w/o Sakic and a 0.278 w/o Stastny.
Soooo, conclusions that could be drawn include:
1. that Joey Q. was able to weather a bigger drop in the winning chances and still get the Avs in the playoffs
2. Granato didn’t have the team performing at a very high level even with Joe and Paul in the line-up, therefore the team didn’t have as far to fall,
3. Brunette was integral to the team and Granato had no chance without him, or
4. Theo carried the team the entire year and Budaj sucks.

I’m going to go with 1 and 2 there

Not Much...
…Can be drawn from this, in my opinion. Regardless of what anyone wants to believe, this year’s team was vastly different from the teams of the Quenneville years. For starters, Theodore carried the team last year. They had no business being in the playoffs. Brunette was there pouring in 20 goals, just like always. The defense was better.
Last year, the defense was focused on playing defense. This year they weren’t. That’s where I will definitely give the edge to Coach Q. I’m still having nightmares about Ruslan Salei carrying the puck through the neutral zone. Foote was hurt a bunch this year, though, and they didn’t have a defender like Finger to replace him.
I don’t think that Granato should be back next year. He absolutely can’t come back after this season. But you can’t really compare and contrast this year under Granato with last year under Quenneville. They are vastly different teams.

Ehhh
I don’t know about vastly different. Yes Theo’s success was instrumental for the playoffs, but the Avs were sitting in the 8,9,10 seed before Theo started playing well. Sure, the Avs were sitting in the 8 seed for part of this season, but they faded while Q’s team forged ahead. Yeah last years team had Brunette, but Smyth wasn’t playing as well.
I think everyone recognizes that Q had some advantage, but the advantage wasn’t that big. I think Granato should have been able to coach this team to ~11 or 10 spot in the west and I maybe could have said “Well he did ok enough for another chance, and he had more disadvantages than Q, and injuries played a large role”. But the discrepancy between the standings in last years Avs and this years Avs is greater than the discrepancy in talent level than last years vs this years.

I think the obvious conclusion is that Larry Robinson should have been coaching instead of either of them

The Flu
After Theo Fleury I always view ‘the flu’ for a game differently…
I just want Drury back... I recognize the Drury->Morris->Statsny chain, and I stick with the statement.
