It was a win-lose situation last night. By winning, the Avalanche lost ground in the Standings Of Suckitude. Tampa slides down to the 2nd spot (Colorado owns the wins tiebreaker). The Avalanche have all but secured at least a top er...bottom three finish; one more loss by Colorado or one more point by Atlanta and the Avs a guaranteed no better than a 28th finish. However, it'd be nice to finish 29th to guarantee a shot at one of the big three (Tavares, Hedman or Duchene). If the season were to end today, we would know that there is indeed a God. No, that's not right. If the season were to end today, the Avs would have a 14% shot at #1, a 56% shot at #3 and 30% chance at #4. So, hold off on buying those Hedman jerseys for the time being.

As soon as one of Atlanta’s goalies can stop a puck, they should secure us a bottom 3 finish. They can score a ton of goals…they just can’t stop them. The Avs win yesterday…while kind of sucky in it’s own way…helps me see some playoff hockey in Chicago. I’ve said it before and I will say it again. It’s nice to have hockey being talked about again in this area
The Avs controlled their own destiny until last night. They could have sucked their way to the 2 slot without any help. Now they need help. Very disappointing. Didn’t Galiardi and Hejduk get the memo? Was someone else behind the bench?

Budaj and the young defense
either didn’t get the memo, or they are trying to ignore it. Darn meddling kids.
MHH: Like the Avs organization, we’ve now officially lost our minds.

That
and they haven’t been “coached down” yet. Maybe the LEMs have this weird thing called a “system?” Wouldn’t want that around here. No way.

Sarcasm aside
One of the things I’m hoping for in the offseason is that Sylvain Lefebvre gets promoted to the Avs assistant coach in charge of the defense. Every time someone is called up from the minors on defense I’ve been impressed with their style of play. They may make mistakes and not be very good, but I am always impressed by the way the are aggressive and look to actively take the puck away from the attacking team.
As has been discussed many times, Jacques Cloutier’s passive positioning and shot blocking coaching strategy may not be the best strategy. I think the emergence of composite sticks have made blocking shots a ticket to injury problems, and I don’t think Cloutier has adjusted to this development very well.
