Coach or GM or Captain
I haven't seen anyone post this yet (but that might be that I just haven't been keeping up with the threads as much or as often, but whatever) -- What would you guys think of Super Joe being our new GM or new coach (should the 'need' arise)? Would this be more of the same "clinging to the past"? I would think he could be a good coach with his reputation of being a good leader, but I'm turned off by no experience.
Just a passing thought I had when I remembered that we would "know his plans sooner" this year...

I would not be opposed to this, but I personally feel he is going to take a little time off from hockey (once he’s done playing) before coming back in any sort of capacity for the avs. IIRC, family issues were a big part of his decision making process last year, and i think it would stand to reason that he would like some time to be with his family before picking up another time consuming, stressful job. It’s not like he needs the money, after all.
No experience? Doesn’t he coach a kids team? How is that any worse than the avs we saw this year? Sorry, cynical side of me coming out there.

08-09 Avs- can we decline the penalty?

Joking
I was joking that Roy coaches QMJHL, which is basically kids.

We’ve discussed this before from time to time…and I still am not sure Sakic would make a good coach. He’s a great guy and probably could be a great X’s and O’s kind of guy, but I don’t see him lighting a fire under anyone’s ass as a coach. As a player he leads by example…that doesn’t help you as a coach. I could see bringing him in as an assistant coach, but I think somewhere in management is where he’ll end up.
MHH: Like the Avs organization, we’ve now officially lost our minds.

Yeah — I think I buy most of that. Besides, if he had coaching aspirations, you’d think he’d jump behind the bench a couple of times this year and swing his gnarled fingers at people. That’d get people motivated!
Does anyone know what he was doing while he was rehabbing?
Was he with the team? (not on the road obviously)
Did he cry a lone, sad tear when he thought about the team this year?

Wow, way to shoehorn a joke in there for the sake of using the crying Indian pic!

Exactly
Look at Gretzky.
Great player, not the greatest coach. Not terrible, but he’s no Cup-contending coach. And It’s not all the team’s fault, I’m sure a coach like Scotty Bowman could get the Yotes into the playoffs.

No thank you.
Nothing has been shown to indicate Sakic would be a good coach or GM. He’s got that LaFontaine-esque personality that works great as a lead by example captain, but not so much as a coach or GM. I love the guy to death but I just don’t see it. Besides, nearly all coaches are fired at some point. Let’s let him keep his legacy 100% intact.
