Career Highlights: Believe it or not, someone on the Avalanche set a career high for plus minus last year. And yes, that someone is Guite, with a +2.

Report: Ben Guite had another solid season centering the 4th line. While he struggled at points (and was an occasional healthy scratch), he still mostly delivered as he had in the past.

Guite is your basic, hard-working 4th liner. He isn't blessed with a great deal of size, speed or skill, but he works hard, throws the body around, kills penalties, grows manly mustaches and scores the ocassional goal here and there. After dipping to 48% faceoff efficiency the previous year, Guite rebounded to 51.5% in 08-09.

I think his play declined slightly last year (hence the drop from a B to a B-) but he still contributed quite a bit.

Fun Fact: Guite shares a birthday with another famous mustache: Bryan Trottier.

The Ben Guite Drinking Game:  Drink when Guite is thrown out of the faceoff circle  Drunk potential: High

What I Said Last Year: "Although I'd like to see him improve in the faceoff circle, I think Guite is an excellent guy to have on our 4th line. And the fancy ‘stache he sports on occasion kicks all kinds of ass."

2008 Salary (and Cap Number): $475K ($475K)

2009-2010 Status: UFA

Outlook for 2009: Who really knows what's going to happen with the team this summer. Guite is an unrestricted free agent, but I can't imagine there's going to be huge bidding war for his services. He's a fan favorite in Denver; along with Lappy and Sakic, he's a free agent most folks would like to see return. I think there's a good chance of that happening.

Next Up: Daniel Tjarnqvist

That is a great picture of the FU; or as know at MHH “the Pornstache”

MHH: Like the Avs organization, we’ve now officially lost our minds.

I'm The Canary - but I'm not cute nor cuddly, and I don't sing.

i hope we bring him back

he’s about as perfect a 4th line center as you could ask for.

Granato

The fact that Guite ever sat on the bench while Tyler Arnason was starting was enough for me to turn on him, and this is with the full acknowledgment that Guite was off the beginning part of the season.

I don’t see how we can NOT sign him, with our current cap “situation” (i.e. clusterfuck)

08-09 Avs- can we decline the penalty?

by TheRed on May 20, 2009 11:55 AM MDT reply actions

oh it’s not that bad. next year is a little tight especially if Sakic is back, but we’re in possibly the best shape in the league going into 2010-11, with the cap reduction looking likely.

Honestly doc, I see what you’re doing there, and I don’t think you’re going to sell anybody on rainbows and puppy dogs. Out’s WAY out of character for you.

ha, well, I really think that we have a great cap situation in 2010-11. :)

by thedoctor on May 20, 2009 1:07 PM MDT up reply actions

I agree. I think we’ll be in good shape, probably with another high draft pick, too. It’s next year I’m talking about, and we’ll need some cheap guys for that. Hopefully our new GM, if we ever get one, will not sign a bunch of long term deals this summer.

get ready to be shocked, 2 optimistic thoughts in the same day

I actually think we’ll make the playoffs this year, if we have a decent offseason and fix the coaching. the talent is there imo.

if TG or Cloutier is back, then I agree we’ll suck again.

by thedoctor on May 20, 2009 3:35 PM MDT up reply actions

My thoughts are if TG is back, Big Ben is gone. For some reason, he was in the doghouse for a good portion of the season a la The Baron and Q the year before. However, in a new regime and with the salary cap limitations we have to work with this year, I would definitely see him back on the roster. This is even more of a sure thing, in my mind, if Patrick comes in as coach due to the French-Canadian bond thing going on (I can hope, can’t I?).

Ben Guite, MVP.

I don’t think Mr. Granato has much say in personnel decisions. In fact I don’t think he has much say in coaching decisions either at this point.
