HEATLEY

I just read that Heatley wants out of Ottawa for a western conference team.  I know the cap is already screwed.  But what do you think the Avs would give in a trade for an elite scorer witha 5 yr, 7.5 mil contract?

How many of you fans would want that? I know I would.  I would give up Hejduk as much as I hate to see favorite player of mine go, but Heatley? that would be a great trade to me.  I know it would take more then that though

I mean, it would be nice to have him, but you have to take into account what’s going back. if I’m the GM, I’m calling and seeing if and what they’re interested in.

Depends

It really depends what the Sens want in return. I’m pretty sure they would start with that #3 pick.

They would have to take Tucker/Clark & Salei in order for the Avs salary to work right. That means that the Avs need to give them something that sweetens the pot, since they’ll be taking salary off of our hands.

So in summary the Avs would have to give up a very good asset (either a Shattenkirk, or Duchene) plus at least another pick or prospect ini order to make up for the Salary that the Sens would have to take.

I’m not so sure Heatley is really worth that to a team that needs more than just an elite scorer.

But I would certainly ask, and I’d probably try and dangle:

- 2 second rounders
- Wolski
- Tucker and Salei
- 4th rounder

for
- Heatley
- Campoli

I don’t think i would do it if I had to give up Shattenkirk or #3

Think there would be any way in heck

they’d take Tucker and Clark instead? Whatever deals the Avs do end up making, it would be so great if they could unload some dead weight in salary along with real players and/or prospects and/or picks. Good thing that whomever put them in this hole is gone …. what was that? …. oh, crap.

No

If we are shedding 2 salaries to the same team, we’d have to make one Salei. Salei is overpaid, but still relatively useful, so a team may take him. The other two…

There's no way they would take Tucker.

He’s crap and everyone knows it. I think the Avs are stuck with him. It would take a lot to get Heatley and outside of the #3 pick and Stastny, I say go for it. He’s one hell of a player. Besides, what do they have to lose?

by Streams Of Whiskey on Jun 10, 2009 3:25 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I say nay, but only because I think it would cost too much. If we got it done for something reasonable, ok, but I don’t think ottawa is dumb enough to take any of our overpriced hacks. Maybe if they took Smyth (and he was willing to go) and Clark, then I could see it. Or maybe Clark and Wolski plus a 2nd rounder (like jibbles suggests). But I think they’d want too much in the way of picks and/or prospects.

08-09 Avs- can we decline the penalty?

by TheRed on Jun 10, 2009 3:31 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

YES AND NO

depends maybe Ottawa values getting rid of a team cancer when the person doesnt want to be there, and at the same time with the way Heatley has been handling his situation it might just take 1-2 players thats it since most GM’s might not want the risk of him wanting to move again after 2 yrs

Yes

We get

Heatly
Campoli

They get

Clark
Svatos
2nd
Salei and/or Tucker
Hensick (if needed)

I’d even give strong thought to Heatley for SoS and Clark.

by Hopfenkopf on Jun 10, 2009 4:40 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

If they’d do that, I’d be all over it. I can’t imagine them not requiring Wolski in the trade though. Maybe replace Clark with Wolski and remove Campoli and Salei for:

Heatley (7.5)

for

Wolski (2.8)
Svatos (2.0)
Hensick (~1)
2nd ’09?

total: 5.8m

I’d do that, it’s only 1.7m for us to take on, and they might do it too… I wonder if they’d do something around Liles and Wolski too, that’s really close.

by thedoctor on Jun 10, 2009 5:07 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I could be way off, but I think with the current cap situation, we would need to be closer than 1.7 mil to do this deal, especially when you’re giving up 2.5- 3 roster spots and only adding one. I think it works better if we give up an expensive d-man, because we have more guys closer and for cheaper than on “O”. Wolski Svats and Clark and I think it could be done. But then we have 2 spots to fill and only an extra 800k to do it. I don’t think I could stomach getting rid of Liles, as he was about the only bright spot the D had last year.

by TheRed on Jun 10, 2009 5:24 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah, it's hard

but you can do it:

I’m putting this in my salary spread sheet (yes, I have one, stop laughing) and it would involve playing Vernace and Cumiskey in the top 6, Hensick as the 3rd line center playing Duchene and Gustavsson (assuming he signs) for 3m each this year, buyout Tucker, and sign Lappy for 1.5m, and use minimum wage guys as the 7th D and healthy scratch forwards.

But if you do that, it’s 54.38m. Weak D though, very weak, and our cap situation is…scary going forward. Hell of a top 6 though.

btw, this is with trading Wolski, Liles, and Svatos + a pick for Heatley.

you think?

I try and put myself in the other team’s shoes, I don’t think I’d take less if I were them.

you’re prolly right though. Overall we’re bad trade partners — for it to work salary wise, they’d not get proper player value. for proper player value you’d give a lot of future pieces if you’re the avs.

I agree with you

But I think other teams are going to be able to offer more doc

Geez, so who else is there for another team to even bother covering? J/K, but honestly, I think we are tanking again with that lineup. No balance. And not enough legitimate threat for a deep playoff run to justify the expense or the (even more) lack of D

let's not overpay again

Heatley only works if surrounded by a team that fits. Think Smyth. He does not have not the defense with the big shot on our Avs team. Let’s rebuild and do it right. Heatley is not a great two way player and our defense is not looking great for next year.

by eve on Jun 10, 2009 6:56 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

agreed. heatly would be a great addition, but it wont fix all our problems. i am leery of spending much on new players when we don’t even know how our new front office and coaching will work out. i would prefer to have a little wiggle room.

dont forget, too, if we trade away all our valuables for Heatly and Gus signs somewhere else, we have no goalies. or, i should say, the same goalies we had last year, unless Cash or Weiman are ready to be called up.

unless Cash or Weiman are ready to be called up.

They’d have to go through a little process called “signing a contract” for that to happen. Apparently the Av’s mis management haven’t realized they have ZERO goalies for the affiliate next year.

Bacashihua is a RFA as well: http://www.avalanchedb.com/freeagency.htm

I would anticipate they pick 1 of Cash or Weiman and sign Cann to back that choice up. I still really, really wish we’d gotten a glance at Cash or Weiman towards the end of last year.

Nothing new really
Saying he was “shocked and disappointed,” Murray said he would try to accommodate Heatley’s trade demand, ideally before next week’s NHL draft.

“I have had some conversations with several teams,” Murray told reporters. “I don’t really have a timetable but I have encouraged anybody that is really interested to try to make the contact before the draft and we will get something done by that time I hope.”
