The way I see this the avs have to put tucker in LE and maybe move Smyth.

Tucker news:
if the Avalanche can’t trade veteran forward Darcy Tucker by late June they’ll buy out the former Leaf.
boy do I hope this is true…hope for Lappy yet?
I'm against this
The Avs should do everything they can to have cap room for next summer. If this means sitting through one more season of Tucker, then so be it. Why next season, because Ilya Kovalchuk (the single most underrated player in hockey right now) will be a free agent, and he’s one of the few who will look beautiful in a Unipron.
Of course, Hejduk, Foote, Salei, and Clark all have deals expiring next summer as well, which is more than enough for Kovi, so If buying out tucker will allow us to make a run at him and re-sign Lappy, then I’m all for it.

PS
This makes it sound like I wouldn’t want Hejduk back, which is absurd, of course I want him back.
Svats also comes off the books next season. So buying out Tucker probably isn’t as big a deal as I made it out to be…

When you buy out a player, you have the option to have his buyout count against the upper limit for the remaining year(s) of his contract, or spreading his buyout out over twice the remaining year(s) of his contract. Tucker would be bought out at 2/3 of his $2.3 million salary this coming season. So, his buyout would count against the team’s upper limit for the season at $1.533333 million next year or $766,666 for the next two seasons. (http://nhlscap.com/cap_faq.htm#buyouts)
So theoretically, he could be bought out and not have his buyout affect the team’s space under the limit next summer.
But anyone who’s in favor of buying out Tucker to re-sign Laperriere, keep in mind that since the buyout amount still counts against the upper limit a player that takes his roster spot has to have a salary of less than 1/3 the buyout amount in order for it to be worth it. Or, it will actually cost the team more. In other words: If the team were to sign Laperriere at $1 million, combined with Tucker’s $1.533333 million buyout amount over one season, that $2.533333 million is more than the cost of paying Tucker the final $2.3 million amount of his contract.
Also, DDC reported in the comments section of the last version of this post that the 2009 Buyout period is from June 15-30th. We’re half way through that period and haven’t exactly heard much of anything yet.

where are you seeing that about one season stuff on this page?
teams may still buy-out player contracts for a portion of the remaining value of the contract paid over twice the remaining length of the contract.
that’s all I see. I don’t think there’s a 1 year option.
Sorry, I really don’t know why I thought that. But you’re right: I didn’t see anything about it in the CBA.

If Kovy goes UFA, it will be a very, very interesting spot for the Avs. There’s quite possibly no other team with less gaping holes AND their cap room next summer. And, the cap will most likely be going down. Kovy will be demanding 8-9m+ per year, but it’s pretty debatable whether there’ll be enough teams interested to drive that kind of price.
In terms of money alone, Kovy is probably best served by signing an extension this summer with Atl. he’ll get his 8m+, he’ll be set. And Atl is definitely on the upswing too, they’ve got some great young forwards, another coming this year, an up-and-coming defense, and a nice situation in goal.
I don’t think anyone is getting 8-9M/year next offseason, not with the cap going down and teams doing a little better job of using the cap with fiscal responsibility.
I think the Avs will be in a really good spot to sign him, and I don’t think he’s staying wiht Atlanta unless the ownership situation hashes itself out by then.

I would absolutely love to see Kovalchuk in an Avalanche uniform, but I can’t even begin to think about something like this at the moment. too many things can happen between now and then

I still think 8m will be his price. but lets say it’s 7m. can you imagine how good and overpaid our top 6 would be?
Kovy (7m) – Stastny (6.6m) – Hejduk (~4.5m)
Smyth (6.25m) – Duchene (~3m) – Stewie/Jones/Hensick/Svatos/? (~2m)
~29.5m with 2 defenseman under contract, though Shattenkirk and Gaunce will probably be ready that year and will both be pretty cheap. Add in Footer on a cheaper contract and some other scrubs…i guess it could work. I’ll toss it in the excel spreadsheet for next year in a bit.
I think you’ll find most teams are really top heavy on their top-2 lines.. most good teams.
And that Kovy-stastny-Hejduk line makes me drool just a little bit

Stop it! I hate having my hopes crushed.
The guy formerly known as "Where is Bob Hartley?". Because it's never going to happen. And no one knows where he is.

I have to say, I think McLeod deserves more playing time than just fourth line minutes, and I think he’ll get it too. I still think Cody Mac has the potential to develop into a 25-30 goal guy, I know that the David Backes comparisons are a bit much, but Cody is a year younger in professional progression, and their careers are following a strikingly similar statistical trend. If the Highlander gets some minutes this year with a capable center, he very well could have a bigger year than last year. I’d put him and Stewart (who is listed by the Avalanche organization as a right-winger) on the third line together, and let David Jones learn how to finish and Darcy Tucker find his passion on the fourth line. Cody Mac and Stewie played well together at times, and if they keep developing they are going to be very important pieces to a good team down the road. We know we’re going to be pretty bad next year, so I think we should give the kids the spotlight and let them jump in the fire.

I just don’t see it. we’ve seen McLeod get some chances higher up on the food chain, and it’s never been all that successful IMO.
I’m not sure I see a lot of parallels in Backes’ career either – he was a 2nd round pick while McLeod was an undrafted free agent.

I was mentioning statistical trends, not career path. All I’m saying is that with a decent center, McLeod has the chance to become a 20+ goal guy. I know that his bread and butter is agitating and fighting and just generally being a douche to the other team, but there is no reason, as far as I can see, that he cannot become what Darcy Tucker was when he was with the Leafs (back when he, you know, had a pulse): a great agitator who is good for 100+ PIM and 20-25 goals. Also, regardless of what you think of McLeod’s potential, I find it hard to believe that he is a fourth line player on this team. He finishes better than Davey Jones does, and his agitating game is better than Tucker’s is now. I would hate to see McLeod get 4th line minutes while Jones shoots a foot wide of the net and Tucker skates around in a coma on our third line. If the Avs are going anywhere soon, they’re going to have to develop a checking line with some punch- physically as well as on the scoreboard. I think Cody Mac and Stewie fit that bill perfectly, and have earned the opportunity to get some important minutes this year.

Question for the cheap seats: Do the Avs have a desire or ability to afford Steve Sullivan if Nashville elects to cut ties?
2008-2009 Colorado Avalanche: Dry Humping Mediocrity
You know, I like Steve Sullivan a lot. He’s a fast, very talented winger and can put up good numbers on the power play.
That said, he’s small – both height and weight wise – for the NHL game and very injury prone. He’s played in the full 82 games just once in his 12 years in the league. He missed the last 20 games of the 2006-7 season, entire 2007-8 season, and the first half of this past season due to a back injury. (But, he did turn into a decent sleeper fantasy pick for me this year given that he was out the first half of the year.)
At 34, he’s not getting any faster, younger, or healthier. I just don’t see how he would be a good pick up for the Avs.

I’ve always been a fan of Steve Sullivan, and he certainly does have a great story. However, at this point, I have come to terms with the youth movement and several years of mediocrity, provided there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I still really believe that our best chance to get back to a Cup is to let the young guns jump in the fire this year. Unless we gave Sullivan a one or two year contract, then I would have to say no. If he was brought in simply to be a top 6 guy during the next two years, then I would be ok with it. But I still have to say I’d rather see T.J. Galiardi get those minutes next year.
