Pensblog thinks Mile High should get a shot at the Winter Classic
And I agree with a ton of what this article says. The game looks stupid in a baseball stadium, with some fans a half mile away from the rink. And the new Mile High would be an awesome venue .... assuming the Avs have a team worth watching again someday.
Among the quotes:
If the NHL doesn't want Colorado playing a home game
with the Rockies in the background of camera shots, they are high -- a mile high, even.

I love the idea, but
I think it’s completely impractical here. From a long term planning standpoint, there is just no gaurentee that the weather would support the game. It could be 0-10 degress F, or it could be 65 degrees. The NHL would have huge egg on their face if they tried to have the classic here and wound up having to move it to the pepsi center due to unseasonably warm weather which is always a possibility.

I disagree
We have outdoor rinks in the area that are open from November through February. They manage to keep them somewhat reasonably functional with rinky dink cooling equipment, I’m sure the NHL could keep a rink in great condition for a few days even if the weather warmed up and the sun was shining. Then what would the drawback be? The fans wouldn’t be bundled up enough? Also, if that really was a main concern, make it a night game. Even a 60+ day in Denver in January usually turns into a damn cold evening.

excellent points
I stand corrected :)
I’ve skated at evergreen for sure, but didn’t realize we had any other outdoor rinks at lower elevations…..

If they can hold an outdoor game in Las Vegas during the final week in Sept. with 80 temperatures I’m sure they can hold one in Denver on New Years Day.
I’m also sure I would have to make a pilgrimage to the holy land to attend that game.
MHH: Like the Avs organization, we’ve now officially lost our minds.

Exactly! Wasn’t the first Winter Classic outside in Canada for goodness’ sake!

Yeah but...
it drives me crazy that you could say the same thing about the Super Bowl. We’ll never get that here either.
I just wish one or the other would take the chance.
