Colorado Avalanche Select Matt Duchene

With the third overall pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, the Colorado Avalanche have selected Matt Duchene from the Brampton Battallion. We have a live draft thread running here discussing this and all the other picks tonight from Montreal.

Glad to have him…it would be great if he’s ready to play this season, but I think we’ll have to wait another season.

Love having a player that fills the badly needed top 6 forward need and who wants to be here. Step 1 to the rebuild is done. Now for the rest of the draft to go well too.

I’m so happy :D Now we just need to get a goalie and we should be back to at least a winning season next year… As long as we don’t trade all our players away, which could be a good thing in the long run though. I want to say that I trust our management, but I think that would make me legally insane…

This guy seemed so much more polished and ready to talk in front of the camera than Tavares. He kinda reminds me of watching a Pat Kane interview. Can’t wait to see him in the Unipron.

Finally, something went right.

If Sakic did decide to come back then I’d bring up Duchene. It would be the one and only chance he would have to learn from Super Joe.

This Avs team needs Matt’s speed in a bad way.

BTW, I thought I was sooooo clever because I spied the number 9 on the Avs sweater at the Avalanche draft table, until I realized everyone got a jersey with 09.

I did notice, though, that it looked like his nameplate was affixed to his jersey, rather than velcro’d on as some of the later picks. I don’t know exactly how that works – I know teams bring several nameplates, but do some teams towards the top bring a couple of jerseys?

I might choose to believe in fate for today, seeing as how Duchene ended up with the Avs. This a fantastic opportunity for Matt and a great pick by the Avs.

the only bad news will be if Joe ends up retiring. It really would be good to get Matt some ice time with Joe.
