The 2009-2010 Avalanche [Updated With Budaj, McCormick]
Here's an update on the Colorado Avalanche cap situation with the Peter Budaj contract and the non-tender of Cody McCormick. I'm assuming that David Jones and Kyle Cumiskey have been tendered, but no confirmation on that yet (more on that later this morning). Note that the Avs can spend up to 8 million on a goalie and a couple of forwards...but I don't expect them to spend up to the cap. I guess we'll know soon enough.

Jones has been qualified
at least according to Dater: Budaj signs deal
The Avalanche made a qualifying offer to potential restricted free-agent forward David Jones. The team did not make a qualifying offer to right wing Cody McCormick, meaning he can be an unrestricted free agent Wednesday.
In the same article he mentions the Avs are pulling a Brunette with four other players, two of which I’m sure we’ll all be happy, the other two…We all knkow how we feel about Lappy, but I was kind of hopping Guite would be back as well.
The Avs also will not offer contracts to potential unrestricted free agents Ian Laperriere, Tyler Arnason, Andrew Raycroft and Ben Guite.
MHH: Like the Avs organization, we’ve now officially lost our minds.
I'm The Canary - but I'm not cute nor cuddly, and I don't sing.
Guite too? bleh

Did Vernace sign a minimum QO? Pretty sure that he’s still an RFA at this point as well.

he is. I’m assuming he was tendered as well.

So we have 9M left for 3 players. I must say that it doesn’t look like we’re gonna be contenders this year, barring any ridiculous goalie streaks (tilt’s head and thinks of Roy).
Keep in mind that Jones, Cumiskey, and Vernace are still RFA’s and the contract numbers listed there are the MINIMUM required in a qualifying offer to retain their rights. For example, Budaj’s minimum QO only had to be $840k and he was tendered a one year deal at $1.25 million. I would guess that the remaining 3 RFA’s listed will have offers something along the lines of:
Jones: .750
Cumiskey: .675
Vernace: .575
Also keep in mind that an NHL roster is 23 players. So, not only does the team have a vacant goaltender spot and 2 vacant spots on the forward lines, they also have 2 vacant reserve forwards to sign. So, if those 3 RFA’s have cap numbers at what I estimate, the Avs have a little less than $8.75 million to spend on 4 players and 1 goaltender.

*IF they spend all the way upto the $56.8 million upper limit.

Blank Spot Under "G"
Gustavsson was supposedly going to decide before July 1 so that the three teams who miss out would have a chance to sign another goalie… so Jonas, any minute now would be nice.
In case we lose the Gustavsson sweepstakes, Josh Harding has been qualified (which I think the minimum QO for him was around $825k). If he is offered a QO, he can still go to restricted free agency, right? I would think we could offer more than that and it would still ge a good deal for us seeing how Budaj got over $1mil. Outside of these two… there’s not much out there that fits in the budget IMO.
Apparently, he’s still taking his time in deciding because his mother has recently passed away. She was actually sick during the World Championships and he left Team Sweden early to be with her (which is why Stefan Liv started in the Bronze medal game and not he).
MONSTER
Wilson confirmed that the Sharks are still in the running for unrestricted free agent net minder Jonas Gustavsson, widely regarded as the top professional goaltender not under an NHL contract.
"He is a young man that we are certainly very impressed with," said Wilson. "He has had to deal with some personal trauma recently with the loss of his mother and we’ll give him as much time as he needs to make his decision."

If you could find other GMs dumb enough
What players/contracts would you unload, even assuming you received little in return other than cap relief?
My list, in order:
1. Tucker
2. Hannan
3. Clark
4. Hensick (even though he isn’t that expensive, but he sucks at any cost)
Guys I would look to move for value in return:
1. Wolski
2. Svatos
3. Liles
4. Smyth
Only Liles and Smyth if the team goes into full blow it up and rebuild mode. Heck, if they do that, might as well see if they can get good value for Hejduk too. I don’t want them to go there, but just saying ….

My list, in order:
Tucker
Clark
Hannan
I would dangle the following as trade bait, especially if it could net us Harding or Pavelec (I like Anderson, Johnson and Lehtonen as well. If the Caps were dumb enough to sign Josie in the first place, maybe they would trade Hensick and Hannan for Varlamov??)
Hensuck
Svatos

Good information on Salary Cap Mathematics and Details
I found the following post to be very helpful in dealing with some of the nitty gritty details, such as calculating cap-hit for buying out players (coughtucker):

In protest of adulthood
Entry Level Deals: Entry level contracts are capped at $925,000 (by 2011). These contracts vary in length. For those aged 18-21, the entry-level contract is for three years, 22-23 is for two years, and 24 are for one year.
* Entry Level Bonuses: Bonuses for entry-level contracts are capped at 10% of the players contract. These bonuses count against the cap. For example, Lauri Korpikoski’s salary in 2008-2009 was roughly $900,000, but his cap hit was over $1 million because of the signing bonus.
I still don’t understand how this can result in rookies like Zac Bogosian counting $2.725 against the cap.

guys can earn upto $2.85 million per year in bonuses on their ELC’s. So, their cap number is their salary plus the amount of potential bonuses that they can receive according to their specific contract.

Cumiskey
Dater says Cumiskey has been QOd.
I realize that I’ve got the wrong cap # for him, because I based it on his cap number last year, not his salary. should be $522.

Does it bother anybody else that with only $8+ million left under the cap, we’ve only got 3 lines of forwards, on of which is essentially spare parts from the last two seasons, 1 back-up caliber goalie and the same fucking defense from last year?

Until I remember that there’s a ton of expiring contracts next season, and Ilya Kovalchuk will be a UFA
