Letter to New Brass About Lappy
I sent a similar letter to FG last year before the trade deadline. Since Lappy is still here, I figure it must've worked. (Yes, I am that influential since you ask.) So I'm at it again with hopes that GS will hear the cries of the masses as well. Thanks goes to hockeymom for inspiring me to do this sooner rather than later.
Dear Mr. Sherman,
First, let me congratulate you on your recent promotion to General Manager of the Avalanche. I’m sure it’s been an exciting time for you and your family with many joyous moments. I would also suspect you have already faced some challenges in your new position, and clearly, more are on the way. One of those difficult decisions is the signing of Ian Laperriere.
Last year, there were rumors about trading Lappy. As the season came to a close, the media reported there was a stand-still in the negotiations to re-sign him. Now, with all of the organizational changes taking place, Lappy’s status has been pushed out of the headlines, yet he still remains at the top of most fans’ minds.
You need to hear the voices of the fans. Read any blog and any comment on Avs’ websites across the Internet, and you will clearly see the fans want Lappy wearing blue and burgundy until he retires and his jersey in the rafters.
Here’s the bottom line, Mr. Sherman. Lappy IS the heart and soul of this franchise. He has been the biggest bright spot in what has become the lowest point in Avs history. If you take him away from us, you will lose many of the shrinking number of supporters you have left. This isn’t just because he’s the hardest worker on the ice—which he is; nor is it because he does so many charitable things in the community—which he does. It’s not even because he’s a clear leader for a team that, without Joe, will be sorely lacking a guiding force on the bench and in the locker room. It’s because we love him. For all he does for the team and for the fans, we absolutely love him.
We want Lappy back. Make it happen.

Excellent letter
I think I will send one too. Maybe an avalanche of Keep Lappy letters might get his attention.
Colorado Avalanche: Please excuse the mess while we are under construction.

I wonder if they pay attention to the polls on their own website. Around the trade deadline there was one about Lappy…overwhelmingly it said the Avs should re-sign him.
MHH: Like the Avs organization, we’ve now officially lost our minds.

Well.. I can tell you how much the fans here in Los Angeles miss him. (I go to every Avs game in LA and Anaheim). The Kings fans are still sporting the Lappy jersey with pride and numbers… huge numbers. He still gets loud applause here and every LA fan I talk to regrets that he had to leave. That being said, he was a victim of circumstances in LA, and the same thing could happen in CO. No one in their right mind on a winning/successful/playoff team would ever trade him (right?). I personally would love to see him stay, but I am prepared for his departure. Either way, I am still going to support the Avs 100%. And root for Lappy no matter where he ends up.
The guy formerly known as "Where is Bob Hartley?". Because it's never going to happen. And no one knows where he is.

I'm in the LA area too
and go to all the local Avs games as well. And yup, there are tons of folks still sporting the Lappy jerseys at Kings games. One of the women on my hockey team has a signed jersey that is cased and mounted in her house.

My family and I were at the final game against St. Louis
That was right after Lappy’s 1000th career game. St Louis presented him with the official player sheet (or whatever you call it) from his first NHL game. You could tell the Blues’ coaches and players still have deep affection for him. Now, how many players can you say that about?
Colorado Avalanche: Please excuse the mess while we are under construction.
i dont care....
who we draft with number 3.
if we get a goalie.
if Joe makes his decision in november.
all i care about is that we sign lappy. thats all that matters. MR SHERMAN IT IS ALL THAT MATTERS TO US RIGHT NOW.
that has to be a slight exaggeration, right?

Signing Lappy just seems like such a no-brainer
So, looking at the org’s recent track record, he’s as good as gone.

Screw Lappy
We’ve got Tucker now! Did someone say upgrade? Cha-CHING!!!
I don't believe in Peter Budaj.
Don’t get me wrong I signed the petition, but Lappy is 35. When it goes, the difference between him and Tucker isn’t going to be that much. So if they don’t sign him, it might not be the end of the world.
All that being said, you don’t go through the effort to draft a contract that pays him less this year than last year—it’s wasted effort. Call him on the phone and say to him/his agent that you can’t afford him and wish him the best of luck. That would be classy. Something that this organization has forgotten about.

Well
FWIW Lappy has played in 70, 74, 81 and 82 games in the last 4 seasons, and hasn’t played in less than 62 since really cracking the lineup.

that’s a lot of mileage. aside from sakic there is no one over 35 i’d want the avs to sign to anything more than a one year deal. But they didn’t have to insult him either.

yeah the only difference between Lappy and Tucker
is the size of heart, the intelligence for leadership, and the bravery to take a puck to multiple body parts for the team. From what I’ve seen, Tucker needs to ride a tornado to Oz to even come close to Lappy on those points.

Then there's that whole scoring more points...
…being someone you can tell your kids to try to emulate, playing more games for the team thing, but yeah, who’s keeping track of the small stuff?
Maybe Tucker could “wander” into traffic?
