Colorado Avalanche Signs Goalie Craig Anderson

via cache.daylife.com

The Colorado Avalanche have signed free agent goaltender Craig Anderson from the Florida Panthers to a 2 year $3.6 million contract. Anderson is a former 3rd round draft pick (1999 by Calgary and 2001 by Chicago) with 6 years of NHL experience as a back-up. Anderson posted a 2.71 GAA with Florida last year and an attractive .924 save percentage in 31 games. The Illinois native will likely challenge incumbent Peter Budaj for the starting job in Denver.

In my opinion, this is an excellent signing for the Avalanche. The get a competent goalie but not someone who will expect to be handed the starting job; the competition between Budaj and Anderson should help both goalies (and the team). And the $1.8 million cap hit is certainly palatable.

I wonder whether this was the front-office’s first choice…

Wait a second, I really don’t care! They were probably making a booty-call to Theo

they knew what Biron wanted (5m), they knew Gustavsson wasn’t in play, and Russo reported they’d inquired about Harding, so they knew that price too.

Based on the timing, I think they went right after Anderson at the starting bell, and that strategy paid off because everyone else was dicking around. Anderson came cheaper because we were fast.

agree

I can’t believe how cheap he was, I originally thought $2M-$2.5M/year, but bumped it to $2.5M-$3.0M because of the lack of good goalies, and their relative normal cost.

Excellent work here.

*Anderson will make $1.5 million this season, and $2.125 the year after. So, two years and $3.625 million.

From AD

That’s a $1.8125 cap number, folks.

Sounds like a helluva bargain to me! I’m happy. This dude bailed out my fantasy team last season with his SV% after I plucked him off the waiver wire. So he’s already on my good side. And that photo is too cool.

Go Avs!

Ditto. My only complaint was Vokoun playing so much.

heck of a lot better than trading for an overpriced mediocre goalie like Huet

I’d say it’s a good signing. He had some shaky starts in Florida but I think the change of scenery will do him well. If I’m not mistaken, Florida had the most shots against last season and both he and Vokoun did a pretty good job despite not making the playoffs.

Florida faced a league high 34.7 shots per game

Anderson went 15-7 in 31 games. 2.71 GAA and a Sv% of .924

Not bad

Let's just hope

the Avs can score more than 2 goals a game, which is more than can be said of last year!

hah well if you get a few goals in front of Anderson he’ll keep it close. I remember thinking last year that if he had a better defense or at least an offense to put up some goals he’d be much better than he looked.

We need D now...

The way I see it is that Anderson is a fairly good deal and he can post a decent # of wins aslong as the Avs can get some D back to support. Now that is obviously just part of the problem from last year… We need goals to support as well… As well as less man games lost to injury… If that all can work out 1+1+1=3, the Avs may actually be a contender in the northwest…. I have my fingers crossed

Photobucket

Yeah, I know, he would have preferred Ice Girls, but instead got stuck with my son. He was a little surprised when I asked if he would pose for a photo with my son and sign a puck.

We will have to hook him up with the Colorado Mammoth Wild Bunch. According to my son, they are pretty hot, especially the ones in the bikinis in the hot tubs during the games :-)
