It makes total sense

I mean the Avs are rebuilding with youth, so what could be a better move than to trade 21 year old second round draft pick for a 28 year old career minor league player that you already drafted and traded once before.

Yooooouuuuuur Colorado Avalanche!

It depends on what the next move is… It might be the one that makes all the sense in the world.

I hear ya. I do. But this feels like two trades in a row, Smyth being the other, where we didn’t get all we could get in the deal. At lease in the Smyth trade you could make the argument that teams knew the Avs wanted to salary dump, but it isn’t like the Avs should have come across as eager to get rid of a 21 year old prospect.

Maybe Williams stinks, and they are willing to jettison him for a leader in the AHL. But just based off of age and draft position, couldn’t we have gotten a late round pick thrown in or something?

by exredcoat on Jul 16, 2009 6:29 PM MDT up reply actions

I’m really not sure I understand this deal at all.

He had an up and down first season as a pro, but not enough to just dump him for someone who is a borderline NHL player at best. This seems like misuse of a solid asset here. There are dozens of players like Fahey still available on the free agent market. Something doesn’t smell right with this move.

PL

Always talked about building assets, using assets, not giving away assets. And in some of the big deals he made, he managed to include guys the organization had overvalued as parts of those trades to land “final pieces to the puzzle.” Now we are just giving assets away? Doesn’t make any sense whatsoever.

by Bob in Boulder on Jul 16, 2009 7:09 PM MDT up reply actions

so what could be the rationale? what doesn’t smell right? is this some sort of kickback?

all I can think of is that Nigel either had something really wrong with his attitude, or he requested a trade.

by thedoctor on Jul 16, 2009 7:25 PM MDT up reply actions

still doesn't make sense

You still gotta get more for one of your best prospects. Mind boggling.

Comparison:

Drafted: Williams 2nd round, Fahey 7th round
Age: Williams 21, Fahey 28
Career Potential: Williams NHL D-man, Fahey career minor leaguer
Size: Williams 6-4, 226, Fahey 6-1, 215

Makes sense. So now we’re just giving prospects away? This is quite odd, no?

by Bob in Boulder on Jul 16, 2009 7:58 PM MDT up reply actions

I saw him at rookie camp and he looked good to me. He’s got production to support his hype. He’s got size and youth. Even I could call the NY Rangers and get a better deal than that. Fahey is a total throw away aquisition. Spin it until your dizzy but the deal is just wrong on all kinds of levels. Even if Sacco has good inside info on why Williams is bad news, no one else knows that. If he’s salt of the Earth the Avs could still sell him to another club based on his past numbers, age and build. I know you like to post with a positive outlook and I find it refreshing but I don’t think you can spin this one.

by Dario on Jul 16, 2009 8:02 PM MDT up reply actions

I’m not trying to spin anything. Like I said, I don’t care for this trade either. I’m just trying to make some point that I haven’t seen yet.

by mcarson01 on Jul 16, 2009 8:18 PM MDT up reply actions

doesn’t work, though. Williams was on a 2-way deal, making $60,000 in the AHL. I don’t know Fahey’s AHL salary, but it’s probably close to that.

I got Fahey’s numbers from http://www.hockeybuzz.com/cap-central/team.php?team=NYR. I’m not sure if the 500,000 is for NHL or AHL but I was assuming AHL.

by mcarson01 on Jul 16, 2009 8:27 PM MDT up reply actions

that would be his NHL salary. AHL salary is much, much less and, again, on par with Williams. it’s not a salary move.

Fahey, btw, is a UFA next summer

by David Driscoll-Carignan on Jul 16, 2009 8:35 PM MDT up reply actions

They would have been better off getting a seventh round draft pick. There are plenty of Brian Faheys out there right now on the free agent market. Hell, why not just re-sign Vernace or Aaron MacKenzie.

Colorado Avalanche Prospects (www.avsprospects.blogspot.com)

by Angélique C. Murray on Jul 16, 2009 7:50 PM MDT up reply actions

I think that’s what it really boils down to Jori. Why let the better defenseman go in Vernance while getting a guy like Fahey? I mean, just forget all about Williams for a moment. Why are the Avs willing to pay Fahey but not Vernance who for all intense and purposes looks like the better player? One reason….salary. I mean, I know the Avs are cutting costs but by God I hope KSE isn’t THIS cheap. That’s almost more offensive than getting fleeced on Williams.

by Dario on Jul 16, 2009 7:55 PM MDT up reply actions

I think Aaron MacKenzie went overseas already, but your point is still 100% valid.

I keep waiting for them to add “oh wait, we also got a 3rd round pick” or something.

It almost seems like they are trying to build Lake Erie up as a championship team this year or next. With the young and experienced talent that could be down there this year, it’s not too far stretched. This would only make sense if the Avs really think that Willaims is an NHL dud.

You know back when he was considered the second coming of forsberg? This is pretty much the opposite, rather than give up that you know he’s a bad prospect, you pretty much admit it and just get a bag of pucks for him. After the smyth trade for Dmen it’s pretty much become a neck to neck race in town for who is going to blow through more good will the early favorite, McDaniels or the late comer, who is coming in fast— Dwight. Future consideration?

Is it possible that future considerations are apart of this trade and have not been released yet? If so Zherdev is heading to arbitration and the Rangers aren’t happy about it. He’s still young with potential and plays LW.

Just trying to make sense of this deal, it can’t be Williams for Fahey.

9news interview

I’m completely baffled by the nigel williams trade. makes absolutely no sense to me, but hopefully it has some rational bearing on what the Avs are trying to do, but I’m not seeing it yet.

Saw an interview on 9news this morning with Dan Hinote. He still spends alot of time in Denver (his sister works at Childrens hospital). He’s promoting a function for his Hinote’s Heroes organization. Anyway, Suzie Wargin (sp?) asked him about a possible return to the Avs. Whether he was just saying it for the news or if he meant it, he said that he’d LOVE to come back to Denver. Said that his agents been in contact with Denver, but didn’t really elaborate. The fact that he hasn’t already signed probably means they’re far apart on $$$ or that the Avs just aren’t interested.

by jd21 on Jul 17, 2009 8:57 AM MDT reply actions

Thank goodness. Shattenkirk looked pretty good when he was younger, but he’s really stalled out now that he is 20. If defensive prospects haven’t made the NHL by 20 or 21 you should throw in the towel.

by exredcoat on Jul 17, 2009 9:27 AM MDT up reply actions

Only rationale explanation I can think of

Is that:

1. The Avs see Fahey as a late bloomer who is finally ready for the NHL, and
2. They have more in the works to unload at least one, hopefully 2, of their overpriced D-men. Hannan and Clark would be great. Then use at least some of that money to get a few legit NHL forwards.

Well, with the Cap space the Avs have and the relatively small numbers we’re talking about, it probably doesn’t make much difference. And anyway, if he was as big a dick as I’m hearing, the Avs probably didn’t care how much his replacement costs. If it helps the Monsters make better players out of the prospects, I’ll support it.

by Hopfenkopf on Jul 17, 2009 12:16 PM MDT up reply actions

Your first point is interesting. Before the lockout there were a lot of highly priced veterans in the league. Now that they are gone, they are being replaced by rookies and maybe also decent veteran and cheaper AHL players. Fahey fits the bill of a decent AHL and cheap defender.

I wonder though if there is a strategy to build up the Monsters with some proven AHL vets for the following reasons:
1. Have our prospects play with some talent that will help them elevate their game to the next level.
2. Maybe win a championship or just go far in the playoffs which would also help our prospects improve.
3. Maybe help the organization financialy. I truly have nothing to base this one on but I would think that it couldn’t hurt the organization as a whole.

There must be some more benefits to having a strong AHL team.

by mcarson01 on Jul 17, 2009 11:25 AM MDT up reply actions

I think you might be on to something. It’s clear that with the cap what it is and with the Avs’ long-term rebuild underway, shifting the focus to finding veterans to fill out the Monster’s roster of prospects isn’t a bad strategy. Like you eluded, most hockey players are only as good as their teammates, so the more capable veteran players the Monsters have, the easier transition to the NHL the prospects will have. A smaller talent gap, if you will, between the two leagues.

This is all hypothetical/speculation of course, but it wouldn’t be a bad idea if it ended up working.

And some extra butts in the seats in Cleveland surely wouldn’t hurt, either.

Interesting. Question for the cap geeks:

If Vernace doesn’t sign with an NHL club, could he still re-sign with LE as a free agent and be eligible to be called up to COL without having to clear waivers?

For his sake, it would be cool to get an NHL contract, but I’d sure like to see him in a Unipron again. I thought that he was a strong 3rd pairing guy.

2009-2010 Colorado Avalanche - "Hey Brother, can you spare a Left Winger?"

i think once you cross that waiver threshold, that’s it.

by thedoctor on Jul 17, 2009 12:59 PM MDT up reply actions

yeah, it’s really just 3 years and x games from signing your first contract. Vernace signed in 2006, so he’s eligible for waivers next year no matter where he signs.

given the fact that he hasn’t signed with anyone at this point tells me that waivers probably isn’t going to be a big issue for him

That’s what I thought when I heard about this trade. They wouldn’t make a trade like that for no reason. This is the only reason that makes sense. They’re taking rebuilding to the next level. That’s what I would do…

by AlexanderH on Jul 17, 2009 12:04 PM MDT up reply actions

So the Avs lose a good prospect who is apparently a total asshole and not ready for the NHL, but gain a veteran AHL player who is capable at his position and can provide a little guidance to the youngins stuck in Cleveland with him. I’ll take that trade.

I don’t know if there is a huge impact financially to having a good AHL team, but making the team good enough to draw in fans in Cleveland and not actively lose money is probably at least a consideration for management. I’m sure the last 2 years have been at least as brutal, if not more so, for the Monster fans as it has been for the Avs fans.

Why does everybody refer to the avs uniform as a unipron? Is it because the lines make it look like an apron?
