The Toronto Sun Visits The Moore Brothers

Smoore_medium Mirtle links to a Toronto Sun article on the former Avalanche player Steve Moore and his brothers, and offers some brief commentary.

Mark, Dominic and Steve all went to Harvard and all made names for themselves as proficient hockey players, and since then they've all faced unique challenges of various sorts.

Steve's challenges, of course, are the most daunting, and he will likely never return to the NHL.  Todd Bertuzzi, on the other hand, has enjoyed multi-million dollar contracts for the past few years since his barbaric assault on the former Av.  Just a reminder in case your blood has somehow stopped boiling.

Still a UFA. I’m not sure where he may end up. I don’t think Calgary has any intention to bring him back.

SHOULDVE

been banned for life on that hit, i understand that hitting is apart of the game, itd be a pussy sport without it! but to take someone down from behind and then shove his head into the ice for no reason is ridiculous. the same cheap shot that Brashear had against the ranger guy, cheap shots to me dont make the game fun.

Define hitting

What Bertuzzi did wasn’t a hit, it was a straight up sucker punch. If you mean fighting then I don’t think it’d be pussier without hitting. If you mean checking then yeah, it would be pussier without hitting.

Sadly

I think the way the Avs brushed the whole thing with his brother under the carpet, including the horrible Brad May signing, would leave them off of Dominic’s list.

Dom Moore is a hard working, checking centre who can play the PK. He’s not worth big dough, but he’d fit well in Colorado if he was willing to play there.

I don’t know if it even makes that much sense. If I started a job with CDOT tomorrow and got hit by a car passing by I’d get disability even though I didn’t have months on the job.

by exredcoat on Jul 17, 2009 4:13 PM MDT up reply actions

yeah, but a lot of jobs have a waiting period for that kind of thing. 3 months for health insurance, 1 year for disability insurance, etc. my aunt got hurt on the job and had to sue for her disability money. she was done working for good cuz of the injury and they stopped her payments after a few months denying the extent of it. disability regs are whack.

Well

Government is different. They tend to offer benefits including LTD as soon as you start working there. But, this is hockey, not government so I have no doubt they have rules just like corporations and waiting periods. It would have been from a previous CBA given how long ago this happened, and I don’t have a copy lying around of that agreement.

I wonder if Moore might be denied a payout because of the pending lawsuit.

by James Mirtle on Jul 17, 2009 4:36 PM MDT up reply actions

I understand the timing difference but I wouldn’t think they would withhold disability due to a pending lawsuit because in the mean time, he has “no” income. Additionally, any pending monies received from a lawsuit would not cancel out disability… unless the CBA expressly said so…

I always struggle to decide which part of this makes me madder

1. The fact that Moore wasn’t trying to hurt Naslund in the first place
2. The fact that Naslund was fine, so what is the point
3. The fact that Vancouver waited a game (or was it more) to enact their “justice”
4. The fact that Moore had already answered the call and fought somebody in that game
5. The fact that Bertuzzi never got remotely close to the punishment that he deserved
6. The fact that there are actually jackasses out there who think Moore is faking for the money and was only a marginal player anyway.

I think I will stop listing as I keep pounding the keys harder with every entry and I really don’t want to go buy a new keyboard right now.

by exredcoat on Jul 17, 2009 4:11 PM MDT reply actions

or the fact that so many seem to forget the whole “shove his head into the ice” part of the incident. that alone takes this way beyond just a ‘bad hit.’

What scares me is what was Bertuzzi trying to do? It looks to me like he was literally trying to kill Moore. Bert chased down Moore, sucker punched him from behind, drove his unconscious head into the ice and continued to hit him. This sounds like attempted murder to me.

Sorry….I meant that he was fine, or at least recovered and back on the ice, by the time the incident with Bertuzzi happened. Obviously missing 3 games isn’t nothing, and any concussion has to be treated as serious.

by exredcoat on Jul 17, 2009 5:26 PM MDT up reply actions

my number one

is when people bring up his stature/skill level as a player as relevant in the discussion. It seems odd to me that the life and livelihood of a top liner, say a Naslund or a Hedjuk, would be worth less than that of a ‘lesser player’…

I just want Drury back... I recognize the Drury->Morris->Statsny chain, and I stick with the statement.

by BeachNSnowGirl on Jul 17, 2009 8:03 PM MDT up reply actions

I agree. The only way that would be marginally relevant would be if Moore had been a goon, sent on the ice specifically to go get Naslund. Which, obviously, he wasn’t.

by exredcoat on Jul 17, 2009 8:11 PM MDT up reply actions

actually, to be clear, I agree that should be on the list. The one that pisses me off the most is that he had already been in a fight once that game. Even by the most archaic reading of “The Code”, Moore had paid his penance.

Anyone see the TV coverage during this draft where Burke was trying to strike up a conversation on the floor with Bob Gainey about the Hab’s being in the running for LeCav? Gainey just looked at Burke like “get away from me you fuckstick” and walked away.

still very very infuriating!

first of all, i’d like to wish Steve the best.

and now for the main course.
the hit to Naslund by Moore was clean. Naslund himself said he was mostly to blame as he was skating through the neutral zone with his head down. All of us that know anything about hockey know “ALWAYS KEEP YOUR HEAD UP, OR RISK GETTING KNOCKED OUT.” Sure Naslund suffered a concussion and missed 3 games, but the fact is Naslund took responsibility for not having his head up. Furthermore, the canucks played a game at colorado exactly 1 week after the moore/naslund incident and Bettman and Campbell and the rest of the league were in the luxury box watching and waiting on the canucks to do something. given the canucks did nothing the league let their guard down, which vancouver was hoping would happen. they waited until they had colorado in vancouver so their fans could see the massacre. the minute brad may put the “bounty” on moore is the minute the canucks as an organization should have either issued fines or suspended may for his actions. burke, crawford, bertuzzi and ownership should be held accountable. Bertuzzi was a representative of the city of Vancouver, and an employee of the canucks. the city itself isnt responsible but it sure puts a black mark on them. should this have happened in the USA, Bertuzzi would have been charged with attempted murder, not to mention the assault charges. the Canucks players, coaches, and the rest of the organization would have been charged with conspiracy to commit murder and all that. Bertuzzi made a deal got some probation and a 17 game suspension (international competition ban not included). what does that say about the system? MOORE deserves anything he gets and then some from Todd Bertuzzi. I also think the Canucks should have to pay every last cent of Steve’s contract that remained from that date forward, and cover all his medical bills, plus compensate him for future lost income due to disability. Burke should have been punished as well as Crawford and all others involved.

i will just stop typing now before i have a brain anurysm (sp) or something.
