Joe Sakic Retirement Video

In case you missed it, here's Joe Sakic's press conference again. It is just Sakic's part of the press conference - Pierre Lacroix's touching speech and Woody Paige's embarrassing one (and the terrific tribute video) are not shown.

God, please don’t make me watch it again…please?

Who invited Woody? That dude’s a real c**t!

fixed the title – Woody’s asshatery is thankfully not included

I can’t watch this again. Too soon, too soon.

by InYoFace on Jul 9, 2009 8:24 PM MDT up reply actions

why include woody paige, the guy knows jack squat about hockey. he’ll occaisionally pipe in with an article full of obvious tripe intended to do nothing besides rile people up.

by jd21 on Jul 9, 2009 10:55 PM MDT reply actions

I’m no fan of Woody Paige, but I thought his speech about Sakic was pretty good. The jokes were lame but he did a great job of explaining Joe’s importance to Colorado sports.

by Tashimojo on Jul 9, 2009 11:37 PM MDT reply actions

Except all he talked about was Woody Paige…it had next to nothing to do with Sakic. There were a few smatterings of Sakic stuff in there, but 95% of it was about how good Woody Paige is. It was awful

by chiavsfan on Jul 10, 2009 3:40 AM MDT up reply actions

and embarrassing.

I groaned a bit when the governor came up, but he at least had the common sense to speak about Sakic.

And yet people (except for me, who panned him) are on his Denver Post article praising his speech this morning. Blech

by chiavsfan on Jul 10, 2009 7:26 AM MDT up reply actions

And unlike most speeches given by politicians…this one was short, sweet, and to the point.

PL also talked about himself more than Sakic in his speech, but I don’t see the hate spewing forth for it. I think people just want to hate Paige, and yeah, his attempts at jokes make it hard not to. I’ll make the crazy assumption here that most people on this site are die hard hockey fans. I think Paige’s speech was the best at praising Joe’s impact outside of the world of hockey, and that was why I was surprised to find myself actually liking what I was hearing from Woody. When he talked about how Sakic and the Avs brought Colorado into the company of cities with sports championships you could hear the emotion rising in him and it just goes to show how any sports fan could be impressed with Sakic’s career.

They introduced Woody speech as the voice of the fans, but it wasn’t. It was the voice of the non hockey fans, and I’m pretty sure if viewed in that light most would agree that it was a decent speech.

by Tashimojo on Jul 10, 2009 11:43 AM MDT up reply actions

That’s because PL’s had a direct Joe Sakic related point at the end…in fact, I didn’t take until the end. Basically, PL’s point was:

Sakic knew he was going to retire…knew for awhile, in fact. But he was such a class guy that he waited for not only PL’s surgery to be done, but for the complications for that surgery to heal up a bit, so that he could be at the Press Conference.

Gotta talk about yourself to make a point like that.

Woody Paige was talking about Woody Paige’s childhood, and Woody Paige’s home town, and Woody Paige’s favorite baseball team, and Irish police and firemen, and Woody Paige’s favorite book. He hardly EVER brought the point around to the reason people were watching, listening, or there. It was a hack speech, and terrible

by chiavsfan on Jul 10, 2009 12:08 PM MDT up reply actions

Hardly EVER? Aside from attributing ALL of Colorado’s sports success to Sakic I guess. And aside from pointing out that Sakic was better than the fictional character that shaped Woody’s life. And aside from pointing out that Sakic was the perfect role model who exemplified what Woody’s dad told him. And aside from presenting him with the gift from the Post.

Everything Woody said he tied back to Joe. Yes, it wasn’t a speech by someone who’s been more devoted to the Avs/Nords than anything else in the past 20 years, but that’s no reason to hate on it.

I suppose it would have been so much better to have had yet another speech about Sakic handing the Cup to Bourque instead? Woody pointed out aspects of Joe’s career that no other speech giver did, and which deserved to be said.

by Tashimojo on Jul 10, 2009 3:05 PM MDT up reply actions

I can’t get over Paige throwing his tie across the room to Sakic. I can’t figure out what could’ve possibly been going through his head during that part of his speech.

It came across as a really shitty move on his part. I’m sure he intended to be funny, but he came across like a pompous dickhead.

And yet ESPN pays him the big bucks to be that way.

Go Avs! Let's get some goals!

by Joe Dunman on Jul 10, 2009 6:49 AM MDT up reply actions

Viewing it as an outside observer who really enjoyed the rest of the presentation (excluding the governor), the only thing I could tell was going through his head is, “I’m Woody Paige, and I’m going to tell you about Woody Paige.”

Couldn’t believe he was chosen to represent the fans to begin with. Then when he went on to talk about himself, baseball, his dad, a book about baseball, stuff his dad said, how HE was the one who called him “quoteless Joe” {insert preening}, and why he not-very-coherently thinks Sakic was a big deal, I was flabbergasted.

Just amazes me. The disconnect between fans and some of these columnists/talking heads is so vast.

Interviewed Sakic and several others yesterday, including Hartley, Peter Stastny, Tugnutt, and Reid. I heard the Sakic and Stastny interviews and they were very good. Here’s a link for anybody that wants to listen.

Finally watched it last night

Some Avservations:

1. Super Joe, pure class to the end. Happiest part for me. He wants to raise his kids in Denver. And may have an eye on an Av management position someday. Imagine that, a hockey legend instead of an accountant as GM?
2. Woody. A lot has been said. Who in the hell decided to put him up there? Fire him.
3. Altiboobs. In a glitch symbolic of how Kroenke’s media empire is faltering, they botched the sound early and then during post conference interviews and had some director or something talking in the background. Way to go, boys. Can we expect another season of radio “coverage” on the 5 watt flickering lighter of the Rockies this season?
4. Footer’s speech was from the heart and made me shed a slight, but very manly, man tear.
5. As was PLs. Nice to see him show some emotion. Now if only he would get well enough to get back behind the wheel.

Sakic’s son in full-streaming tears was also cool, and forced a very manly, man tear from myself.

My wife: “I hope his friends don’t make fun of him for crying!”
Me: “His dad is freaking Joe Sakic. I’m pretty certain he’s covered.”

He’s Joe freakin Sakic, you know hes going to have a wife like that.

Are you from somewhere besides Denver? Shes in the paper a good bit, and in some TV commercials and whatnot, promoting charities and fundraisers.
