Avalanche Weekly
Welcome to Monday morning again, everyone. Here's a look at some stuff that's been happening with the Avalanche over the last week.
- No official announcement yet, but Angélique discovered that G Billy Sauer has reportedly signed with the Avalanche.
- We do have official announcement that the Avalanche will be using the Charlotte Checkers as their ECHL affiliate, replacing the Johnstown Chiefs. The Checkers are the primary ECHL affiliate for the New York Rangers [insert Tyler Arnason joke here].
- The Avs official message board has been update (it also has a new link and I know you ALL have this one bookmarked). Love this rule: "Upon joining the board members will be placed in the "Validating Members" group. In this group posters will not be allowed to create new topics until they reach 100 posts and are promoted to the members group. At that time they will be able to create new topics." That sure sounds like a place I want to hang out at.
- It's been mentioned in the comments section a couple of times, but it bears repeating that Avalanche single game tickets go on sale on September 12th. And yes, I agree that seems really late to be selling tickets for a season that starts on October 1st...
- I hope I'm stepping on any toes with this announcement, but Mike has gotten the ball rolling for the 3rd annual Avalanche Blogger Roundtable. We don't really know much except that it seems like most everyone is interested in doing it again. I have enjoyed these, but I do have to say that I feel the idea for this project has been greater than the execution, if that makes sense. I'm not even sure if I can put my finger on what's missing. If you have some constructive criticsm about the past efforts, I'd like to hear it so either throw it in the comments below or shoot me an email.

We have seen this before, but it’s time…again…to hate the Red Wings. Especially if this comes true (again)
Unrestricted free agent winger Todd Bertuzzi, who finished the 2006-07 campaign with the Detroit Red Wings, may be returning to the club for 2009-10. There are reports the 34-year-old Bertuzzi, who played with the Calgary Flames last year, will sign with Detroit soon.
I hope Bertuzzi does sign with the Red Wings. That’s a match made in heaven. Hated players belong on hated teams.
Its interesting that this news comes out today. The Michael Vick situation made me revisit my hatred of Todd Bertuzzi. I was in my car for a long drive during the weekend with nothing but sports talk radio and my thoughts to keep me from boredom.
I think I may have to let go of my anger a little bit.
Basically, if I think that Vick has been punished in accordance with the law and should therefore be allowed to resume his life and attempt to resume his career, then I have to think the same of Bertuzzi. What I am trying to relate are two people who have committed terrible acts, been punished, and been allowed to return to sporting careers. I am in no way trying to relate whether one act was better or worse or anywhere in the same spectrum as the other.
I may not think that the justice was served, but that is fundamentally a problem with the law itself rather than the person, and therefore correcting the law is the solution instead of unending anger directed to the person. I still hate what he did, but that is in the past. He was punished under the land and under the rules of the league (such as they are). He said he was sorry for what he did, though I can never know whether he was sincere. Time will tell whether he commits another heinous act, and I hope he doesn’t, if not for his own sake then for whomever would be the victim. If the punishment accomplishes anything, I hope it convinced him not to do anything like it ever again.
So I’ve decided that I won’t ever cheer for Bertuzzi and I don’t ever want him to play for the Avs, but beyond that I need to let it go. No more hoping for him to get clobbered at every turn on the ice.
This is a very short and superficial description of my thoughts during a long drive. It really doesn’t really explain my reasons well, but I’ve got work to do and I don’t really want to go on at length.
Please don’t feel like I’m criticizing someone who doesn’t agree with my reasoning or conclusion. I just wanted to share my opinion.
p.s. And I apologize for mentioning Michael Vick in a hockey discussion.

Don’t you remember when Vick suited up for the Avs?

The difference I see in the two situations is that Vick actually served time for his crime. Someone may disagree with the amount of time, but he was punished by the law of the land and by the NFL. Vick has lost part of his life in time served in prison and by the ammount he has lost and/or paid in fines. He is getting chance to play again, but may or may not make it.
Bertuzzi on the other hand has never served time for his assault. He was suspended by the league and was unable to play, lost some money due to his suspension/fines, but has never really lost part of his life. He has never served even a night in jail for his actions. He may, one day, lose more money, if the case ever gets settled in the courts, but I still doubt he’ll ever serve jail time.

I respect your opinion,
But I’m going with a variation of the “Darcy Tucker Defense”
Fuck Bertuzzi
Fuck Bertuzzi
Fuck Bertuzzi
Get rid of the loser point
08-09 Avs- can we decline the penalty?
well, if this turns out to be true, that whole “the rivalry is dead” argument will go out the window. we were all asking for something to spark that flame again….bertuzzi may just be it.

You really wouldn’t believe some of the language that comes out of the office when he’s working on this thing. I have to keep Toddler very clear! I told him this year he should just cut out random sentences of people that go over. Kind of a MadLibs preview of the Avs…

That sounds exactly like me during the Avs “Power Play” last year!
Colorado Avalanche: Please excuse the mess while we are under construction.
Just the power play? Boy you must have very good self control.
Then again by the time the All Star break came around, I think I was watching games in zombie mode, so I didn’t yell much.

The Avs had you eating brains and chasing Will Smith? Man, that was a harsh season…
