Day 2 of Avs Rookie Camp
I was crazy impressed with Ryan Stoa's speed and Matt Duchene's persistence on the puck. The two were paired on the skills drills, and they looked good. Duchene stayed after most of the players left the ice to practice with Brett Clark. Other notables I noticed: David Marshall, Justin Mercier (who scored twice in the scrimmage with the veterans), and D guy Wes O'Neil who may end up being a good call up guy as needed. Not many people were there- anyone from Mile HIgh?
RW Brandon Yip seemed to be a scrappy seeking elbow room to play the puck, but not much in scoring. Yip scrimmaged with notables Hejduk, Wolski, Svatos, and the new enforcer Koci -who was huge. Stefan Elliot should make the team; a lot of play in front of the net. Elliott, Duchene, Stoa and Galiardi scrimmaged with Tucker, Stasny and McLeod who I was following as veteran Avs.
Just a quick rundown before Day 3. I saw one other person taking notes.

I was the one taking notes!
Altho I am interested on how our views of the scrimmages differ. I really liked what Yip brought to the game, and he did score at least once, and assisted on that Tessier goal from the left. Wasn’t Marshall on that same line?
I didn’t even notice Brett Clark. At all. But I was on the other side during the time they were working together.
And I may well have made a mistake about what team McLeod was on… I put him down as being on the black team… is that wrong??
Sippin' PBR on a Colorado game day...
McLeod
I think he was. I was trying to follow that scrimmage but kept being drawn back to Wolski and Koci. The team has some speed and more cohesion. I’m excited for this season too. This is only Day 2 and the team seems to be pulling it together.
HPW
It’s interesting to hear that you think Elliot should make the team. Can you expand on that some more? Did you think he looked better than Gaunce? I’ve been thinking that they will likely send him back to juniors because we are so deep on the blue line. Who knows, maybe we’ll be making a trade soon to dump a few vets.
Rookies day 2
They kept Duchene and Stoa on the rink where the coaches can watch from above and they were watching. Many of the veterans and some rookies were exchanged. Foote remained. Jones, Hensick and McLeod remained but Liles, Stewart, Tucker, Stastny were exchanged from yesterday. Galiardi and Dupuis were on this side too. Many other players but these were some of the players that stood out. Sorry but I think O’Neill remains out of position and does not use his size. Duchene and Stoa continue to impress. Stewart put in a lovely goal. I did not watch the opposite side at all today.
Any thoughts on O'Reilly?
AD seems to think that he was all that and a side of fries at today’s camp.

I’m developing a severe man-crush on the kid, and I only saw him play at Dev camp this summer…

Get in line, I think Beachie is already planning to move in on “Radar”.
MHH: Like the Avs organization, we’ve now officially lost our minds.

I have trouble with that nickname just because the kid’s name itself is so cool. Ryan O’Reilly. Just has a great hockey ring to it…
I can hear it now...

Even better,
You hear that particular announcement in early December.

You just read Beachie’s thoughts, but are interpreting the situation differently.

Elliott
I don’t think he’ll be on the roster, but could be a call-up if needed. Let’s just say he came out to play and impress. Kept seeing his #48 making moves. Didn’t really notice Gaunce.
HPW
Is that possible? I didn’t think you could be called up from the juniors, only the minors. That’s great to hear that he’s looking good though.
Maybe it’s possible but we rarely see it because if they call him up and he plays more than 10 games, they have to keep him. They wouldn’t be able to send him to Erie because he’s not 20 years old.
They would have to sign him to a contract first and I don’t think they’ll do that until next offseason at the earliest. They wouldn’t be able to recall him from his junior team unless it was an emergency, meaning the Avs have used up all their resources with Lake Erie.
The Avs defense is pretty much set. The only positions up for grabs are the forward sports.
