First Cuts
The three forwards in camp on an AHL contract - Josh Aspenlind, Patrick Bordeleau and David Marshall - have been reassigned to Lake Erie. This reduces the number of players in camp to 56.
According to the above press release, Joe Sacco singled out Justin Mercier and Radar O'Reilly for their strong play in today's scrimmage.
Finally, Trevor Cann practiced today. He was being evaluated for a potential broken collarbone after taking a hard shot from Matt Duchene on Friday. Looks like no break.

Galiardi had a fantastic game as well.

Josh Aspenlind, Patrick Bordeleau and David Marshall all already had an AHL contract, so it seems like Sacco was just giving the illustrious 3 a sympathy day with the big boys.

The ice is really crowded. I’d expect some more cuts before the B&B game.
Mercier did look really good.

I agree with Galiardi— he played like he was already on the roster. I noticed Mercier played hard as well. Great to see the turnout today.

Mercier doesn’t surprise me at all. I saw him play in the frozen four; he would never quit and was center of everything good that happened to his team.

I thought Stewart and Mercier looked really good for the black team, and Galiardi and Stoa looked really good for the grey team.
So far, I would be shocked if Stoa, Galiardi, and Duchene didn’t make the team based on what I saw today.

Budaj
I put up a little sumpthin’-sumpthin’ at www.theavalancheguild.com on Peter Budaj and his rusty first day.
I spent pretty much 99% of my time watching……..JOCELYN THIBAULT.
WOW.
He is a natural goalie consultant. I recorded three other videos (besides the Budaj one) that are about 8:00 total of Thibault working mainly with Delmas and Sauer. I was beyond impressed with Thibault, how he was able to handle meeting the guys for the first time on the ice, awkward handshakes on the ice in the midst of training camp going full-blown…then what he was able to absorb just from watching Sauer for five minutes…then what he adjusted in Sauer’s game was pretty remarkable. I was beyond impressed with Thibault and I think he’s going to mesh very well with all the goalies in the system.
My School of Block article for tomorrow morning is all about this and I’ll be posting the videos so look for it. Or if you’re really interested you can find them on youtube on our channel.

Cool. I thought Anderson looked really good and Sauer is having a great camp.
I was @ camp for only about 45 minutes. Between my son aking questions every 5 minutes I didn’t get to concentrate much on the game. I too saw Thibault take the ice for the first time.
For skaters it is so hard to judge things at this point during the drill stuff that I saw. But I did watch Sylvain Lefebvre running some 5 v 5 drills on one half of the ice. He’s very technical and wasn’t afraid to stop everything to make a point. He gave some very specific directions to Brett Clark and from what I could tell from the hand gestures was telling him to basically get closer to the play. I have home that Sylvain saw the same thing on tape that we watched all year. A defense that played like they were on the PK even when 5 v 5. No bigger sinner was on the ice last year than Clark and his containment style defense. So I’m hopefull that Lefebvre coaches a more aggressive defense on the puck carrier. We shall see.
I’m not going to camp Tues and Wed if anyone cares.

Yeah, Last year really turned Clark from a positional offensive D to a terrible defensive D.

I’ll want to hear about the powerplay. How different is it going to be then last year? Any different philosophies (hopefully)?

My only hope
Is they don’t make kittens completely extinct.
With the last couple years, kittens have to be on the endangered list by now.
