Stoa cut
Ryan Stoa will not make the squad out of camp this year. The forward has been reassigned to Lake Erie along with defenseman Ryan Wilson. I'll post updated rosters and take a look at the remaining battles a little later today (read: when I'm done eating my lunch).
[UPDATE]
Lunch is over. Here's the 27-man roster as of today. Four more cuts to go as of today. The Avs next game is Wednesday against the Kings.

I've removed the "Mile High Lock" check from Tom Preissing, as I'm losing confidence that he's sure to stick. More importantly, I've added one to Matt Duchene. I think he's in.
By my reckoning, 19 spots sewn up (on the fence a little about Koci, but I think they need to make sure they have that one, pure enforcer). That leaves 8 players fighting for the final 4 spots. And, as we've mentioned, there is a decent chance that the Avalanche will pick up someone on waivers, like Tyler Arnason (who was waived on Saturday). Those 8 are:
- F Durno
- F Galiardi
- F Hendricks
- F O'Reilly
- D Cumiskey
- D Preissing
- D Peltier
- G Weiman
As of now, I think we're pretty sure that Peltier and Weiman are out. I think Durno is as well. With Radar O'Reilly unsigned, that puts Galiardi, Hendricks, Cumiskey and Preissing on the team. It's still not in stone, though...
[UPDATE of the UPDATE] And, of course, as I was finishing up with the previous sentence, the Avalanche went and signed O'Reilly. I think that probably is an indication he'll start with the club, probably for just the 9-game Wolski Wagon, but we'll have to see. Not sure who that would bump...Preissing would be my guess (to IR or Lake Erie)

Bummer. Hopefully once he picks up some speed, he’ll be able to make the team.

Hopefully he tears up the AHL. Lake Erie should have an interesting team this year with Stoa, McNicoll, Yip and Mercier up front. I may have to get the Fox Sport package so I can see a few games.
I would recommend getting it. You are way too upbeat to only watch the Avs if they struggle this year. It is nice to be able to watch the prospects in the NCAA games as well as the Monsters….although last year you could just watch the Monsters by tuning in the Altitude toward the end of the year ;-)
Do you have the package? Is it worth it? It looks like I would only be able to catch about half the Monsters games. You’re probably right though, I may be able to see BU as well. That would be cool.
Actually if the Avs struggle it won’t bother me too much. Don’t get me wrong, I want to see them win but I just don’t let it get me down if they lose. To be honest, near the end of last year, I was rooting for them to lose so we could get a good draft pick but, at the same time, I wanted watch the younsters score. So it was a tricky balance. This year, if they have a decent system and still lose, I’ll be rooting for the win all the way to the end. If they tank it, Sacco will be on his way out and I don’t want that to happen if it’s a good system.
I do. I have it so I can watch all the Gopher games, but I also watched BU some as well as Monsters games. The other thing is I think the sports pack (at least for Directv) is what gives me the NHL network, which is cool for watching some other out of market games and their highlight show (which isn’t great…but is okay and is the only chance of any unbiased analysis for the Avs)
Yeah I have NHL Network (DirectTV) as well but I don’t have a sports package. I just have the middle tier package. I like to have NHL Live in the backgrond while I’m working during the day. Makes the day go by a little faster.
If you are Ryan Wilson, which part of your day is worse?

b) Moving to Cleveland
c) The story of you getting cut is the afterthought buried in the text of stories titled “Stoa Cut”

as a native Clevelander and LEM STH, I take offense. I know the Cleveland jokes run long & hard & we all typically have a sense of humor about it (as illustrated by the tourism videos) but is there really a need to blast us?

I'm wondering how much Galiardi's status is tied to O'Reilly
What I mean is, if they know they are going to give O’Reilly a 10 day look, would they assign Galiardi to Erie for that period since he wouldn’t need to clear waivers? If they decided to hang on to O’Reilly after 10 days, they could send Durno or Hendricks through waivers to bring Galiardi back up, but if Radar doesn’t stick then there aren’t any additional waiver pick up risks.
I don’t think there’s a lot of risk of losing any of the remaining players to waivers. Maybe Cumiskey, but I don’t even think that is a strong bet

I’m worried that a guy like Weiman that really shone at times for a depleted team last year would get a look from other clubs via waivers. Maybe I’m just drinking Justin’s kool-aid, but I’d hate to lose him so that management can justify the Budaj re-signing.
2009-2010 Colorado Avalanche: Nothing Inspirational Comes to Mind
I also wonder if they might not try to move Budaj, if they feel like Weiman’s capable of being the backup.
This is what we “writers” like to call foreshadowing.

So far
At least in game play, Weiman hasn’t impressed me. I understand he was basically playing behind the Avs “B” team against the St’ Louis A1/2 team. BUt so far, it seems like Budaj and Anderson have been stronger. Then again, I haven’t been able to actually watch a game so what do I know.

cap
we haven’t talked about the cap all that much, but the above roster scenario (with Preissing, Cumiskey, Galiardi and Hendricks on the team) would put the Avs cap hit at a suprisingly hefty $54.06 million leaving them with $2.7 million in cap space.
if Preissing goes to Lake Erie, it would cut $2.75 off the payroll (some of which would be replaced by another player taking his spot)

That sounds to easy. Woudn’t they still have to pay him his regular salary because he doesn’t have a two way contract? How does that work against the cap? Also, why wouldn’t they do this with Tucker as well? I would rather see him go at this point. Without seeing Preissing play yet in this system, it’s hard to say how good or bad he’ll be.
he’s on a one-way deal, so he’ll make his money either way. ditto for Tucker.

One reason they may be more willing to send Preissing down to the minors than they are with Tucker is that as an organization they don’t want to be seen as disrespecting any veterans they sign as free agents. Preissing wouldn’t fit in this because he was more the Kings problem that got dumped on Colorado.
This may not even remotely be something they consider, but it is the only justification I can think of.
actually, I agree with this 100%

In regards to Arnason – just after reading this I came across this on Puck Daddy
Counting down the Top 20 enigmas in the NHL today. Demerits for including Tyler Arnason on the list. The great Ron White once said you can’t fix stupid; well, there’s nothing enigmatic about sucking, either.
I sure hope that Arnason comment was in sarcasm myself. I think Radar might have a shot at being the third or forth line center. He is turning a lot of heads. Wouldn’t that be something having two rookie centers on the team!!! I can’t wait for the season to start already ordered NHL Center Ice and have Oct 1st set to record only bad thing is I hate my Aunt who has tickets to opening night 15 rows up center ice….. :( I hate being stuck in NC
If he’s the 4th line center I’d rather see him in LE for part of the year. He’s 18 and needs ice time more than anything. I’m really excited about him, but <10 min/night isn’t worth keeping him on the roster more than a 9 game tryout.

Guess
Wolski – Stastny – Hejduk
McLeod – Duchene – Jones
Tucker – Galiardi – Stewart
Hendricks – Hensick – Svatos
Scratches: Koci, Durno
Hannan-Foote
Liles-Quincy
Salei-Clark

Dammit
I forgot McLeod and Tucker
Put him on 4th line and send Hendricks and Cumiskey down and put Tucker as a scratch

I have no idea. too many variables. if I was coach and Duchene and O’Reilly were both up:
Galiardi – Stastny – Hejduk
Wolski – Duchene – Jones
McLeod – O’Reilly – Stewie
Tucker – Hensick – Svatos
Koci
And I’d play Hensick and Svatos a lot on the 2nd PP unit.
I started writing a response criticizing your lower two lines, but erased it when I really thought about it and realized that I would do the exact same thing.
Sippin' PBR on a Colorado game day...
Other than the age/experience factor (which could be overcome); if we end up with an injury I wonder what could be with putting O’Reilly on Duchene’s wing. They played a together a little on one of the PP units the other night and seemed to have some pretty good chemistry.

I think it’s really hard to pick the lines because I’m not sure even which position 1/2 the guys will be playing.
Galiardi as a LW or C? Hensick as a RW or Center.? Stewart or Jones could be moved to the left side? I mean I think all I really know for sure is Stastny 1st line center and Hejduk 1st line RW. Other than that it’s kind of a toss up

Cumiskey
Since its likely that Cumiskey makes the roster, does he have a chance of causing either Salei or Clark to become a regular scratch to start the seaosn?

Clark and Salei will be starters unless the AVs trade one of them
by AVs_Fan_in_NC on Sep 21, 2009 2:03 PM MDT up reply actions
I still have some hope that our defense will be a whole lot better than last year. I don’t see any problems with the players [besides Clarkie], just with the system. The guys are decent at a lot of things, but they weren’t being used well. If that is indeed the case, I would expect Cumiskey to ride the bench a good bit.
I hope they keep Cumiskey up and throw him in the rotation as much as possible while trying to offload someone, Hannan, Salei or Clark. Not going to happen, but I can hope. I assume Quincey would be shifted out for Cumiskey…. They’d argue for it in terms of seniority and partner chemistry. I would rather see Clark in the press box, but I doubt that will happen.

I agree with this, and Clark was misused a lot too. I’m excited by having a coach that emphasizes physicality and aggressiveness instead of conservative psoitioning and shot-blocking. I think that alone will make the defense 100x better than last season’s group, (and I think it will make the goalies better too. too many goals were scored because our goalies were screened by their own guys.)

Assuming you kept Cumiskey up, would it be bad to use the d-men on a rotation basis?
I’m not talking a Q “switch ’em up every game” rotation, but maybe every two three games?

Even though I think Hockey players are as good at taking a team view as any professional athlete, for some reason I think this would cause the more veteran players to get bent out of shape. What you are proposing isn’t all that different from what the Rockies do with the outfield really, but at least in baseball they can claim to be exploiting pitching match ups. It would be harder to say “Hey Scott, we are going to sit you out against this team because none of their forwards are painfully slow”, or “Brett, this team has been known to shoot the puck at the net we’d prefer not to screen the goalie too much tonight”.
But in theory, rotating D-men would actually be a benefit since you’d keep guys fresh and also keep your “spare” in game condition.
