Avalanche Reduces Roster To 24
Three Players Reassigned To Lake Erie
Sunday, 09.27.2009 / 1:25 PM / News Colorado AvalancheThe Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today that it has reduced its 2009 preseason roster to 24 players.
The following players have been reassigned to the Lake Erie Monsters of the American Hockey League:
Pos. Player
C Chris Durno
D Derek Peltier
G Tyler Weiman
After last nights game in Las Vegas the Avs have made the final cuts to the roster (or maybe it was done before since none of these guys played last night). I'm curious to see if O'Reilly stays up for more than 9-10 games, or if he's gone in a couple of weeks. I also expect to see Koci as a healthy scratch most night, but wouldn't it be nice if his partner in the press box was Tucker.

O'Reilly
I am thinking he gets only 9-10 games. I think he’s a good player, and going to be great, but i just have the feeling that the Avs feel he needs to be a little older and stronger.
That and Mirtle’s points on bringing buys along early is an excellent point.

Likely. But, I would also not be surprised to see the team bring him along slowly, centering the fourth line for 55-75 games, like the Bruins did with Thornton in his rookie year.

I still miss guys like Guite and Lappy, but I’m happy to see Hendricks make the team. I really liked what he did in his too-brief call-up last spring and he sounds like he’s been causing all sorts of trouble in the preseason. I think he’s going to be a lot of fun to watch.

Don't a couple of these guys go through waivers?
So long Super Joe. In a class of your own in every sense of the word.
Weiman and Durno have to survive waivers. I can’t see that being a problem for either…

yeah, it would definitely be a surprise to see either claimed. I’m more interested to see if there’s any other useful players floating out there on the waiver wire right now, although the Avs seem like they are more or less set with what they have.
and no, they aren’t getting rid of Tucker. Sorry.

I don’t know all the others that are available on the market – but I think that Nathan McIver could possibly be a good low-risk pickup on waivers from Vancouver. He’s still young (at 24) and is a physical, stay at home defender (unlike our 2 billion small-ish offensive-minded defensive prospects)…
that’s an interesting name. also worth pointing out that Dan Hinote was release by San Jose this weekend. I’d love to see him back, of course, but he’d only fit if Tucker were gone.

Not surprised about Hinote being released – San Jose’s bottom 6 is close to set. Also, it might be nice to have him back for nostagic reasons and the nebulous ‘veteran presence’, but he had the worse +/- relative to the rest of his team, and played an average of only 8 minutes a game. That, combined with his age (32) – means that regardless of Tucker’s presence or absence, he would not be a good choice.
It would be better to take a punt on a younger waiver-eligible prospect with potential – which you can give better minutes to develop or at worst expose him to waivers yourself and lose him or strengthen Lake Erie (if no-one claims him).
Speaking of waivers...
Sounds like once Preissing is healed from his surgery, either he or Cumiskey are going to have to survive waivers. My guess is that Preissing’ll be sent to the AHL on a conditioning assignment for a week or two and once that period is over, the team will place him on waivers to either keep him down there or in hopes that another team will claim him.

that’s how I’m leaning as well

I think..
That O’Reilly is more than likely going to stay. Per Dater, Sacco says he is really impressed with O’Reilly and especially likes his defensive qualites and that he was one of his guys he wanted to be out on the #1 PK. Sacco wants better special teams for the Avs and I think that is why O’Reilly will stay, but not because of his offensive numbers because he had 0 goals and assists during pre-season. Sacco wouldn’t have kept him if it wasn’t for his defensive plays, I believe.

I don’t claim to know how Wolski gets motivated, but maybe Sacco also sees keeping Duchene and O’Reilly around as a way to light a fire under his ass. If you’ve got a couple kids just a few years younger than you, wouldn’t you try to raise your game a little more?
