Avalanche Training Camp Rosters Released
For a while there, I thought we were going to hit the holiday weekend without the Avalanche training camp rosters, but they have been released. 59 players in total, more than half (30) will be attending the rookie camp that starts on Wednesday.
There's one surprise, too: the addition of forward Shawn Bates. Bates spent last season in Finland after 10 seasons with the Islanders and Bruins. It probably will surprise none of you to learn that Bates is an alum of the Avs minor league farm team, Boston University. Bates is listed as being invited to camp on a professional tryout contract. In addition, three players (all defensemen) have been invited on an amateur tryout: Matt Clarke, Patrick Cusack and Samuel Finn. Finn and Cusack were teammates with Lewiston of the QMJHL last year while Clarke played with the London Knights of the OHL.
Show of hands...how many plan to attend? Anyone who goes is encouraged to submit a fanpost with their thoughts; you need to keep us non-locals in the loop!

Interesting,
The Baron is listed as LW not C. Does this mean anything?
Stay tuned to find out!

My person thought…is probably not. He has been a LW wing through out his NHL career and there is not guarantee that he will remain a Center, so why change it until they’re sure.
MHH: Like the Avs organization, we’ve now officially lost our minds.

yeah, I don’t think there’s much you can read into on that

It’s the offseason, I am grasping at any hockey straw that I can find! C’mon!

Speaking of grasping at straws, I’m looking forward to seeing what Bates can bring to the lineup. I always liked watching him when he was with the Isles, maybe he can bring a little of that anti-Arnason hustle and testicular fortitude (and maybe more than one facial expression?) to one of the bottom two lines.
Above Average.

woah, deja vu moment there.
was just looking up Bate’s most recent faceoff percentages: 53.2, 51.3, 55.9, 57.0
yes, please.
Bates missed most of his last NHL season due to a hip injury and he’s 34, so it’s not a guarantee by any means…

I’ll be at rookie camp on Friday (hopefully) and the first day of training camp.

So...
…when are the Avs going to officially announce an affiliation with the Boston Terriers? We have 99% of their roster and 50% of their coaching staff already.
It’s kinda like the old days where the Canadiens had an agreement with the NHL that gave them their choice of all of the Francophones that they wanted. The Avs seem to have that kind of connection with BU.

As a BU fan
I love it. Good timing, too, with the Championship. Anyone else going to the BU-BC game at Fenway? I can’t wait! It’s the closest thing I expect we’ll see to an Avs Winter Classic in a while.

What is the problem with the Avs going after BU talent? They are one of the best NCAA teams that have the ability to recruit incredible talent. I say, keep it going.
