Kovalchuk has everyone wound up, and rightly so, but maybe we can go for less and get more bang for the buck.
Ryan Dixon at The Hockey News suggests Alexei Ponikrovsky as an attractive addition to any team. The Leafs are very likely to be sellers (and oddly, buyers) at the deadline. His numbers are good (18-17-35) and he's a UFA. The Avs might be looking for another LW to get through the push to the playoffs, and he ought to be signable for next year.
How about Liles and a 3rd? Or, Liles and Svatos?
OK, neither guy is a Brian Burke type player (think Bertuzzi). What would it take to land a big middle-six winger with a decent scoring touch?
Lines might look like:
Wolski – Stastny – Stewart
Yip – Duchene – Jones
Ponikrovsky – O’Reilly – Galiardi
McCloud – Hendricks – Durno
Scoring punch 3 lines deep, and no Tucker. Really coarse sandpaper on that 4th line. That works for me.
Discussion? THN scouting report suggests he's a hard worker. Anyone know if he's an Avs kind of character player?
