Game 52 Recap: Wild 1, Avalanche 0

Well, if there were a team to stop the Avalanche's winning streak it was the Wild who take the season series 5-1. I truly hate games against the Wild. Usually they are low scoring affairs that the Avs eventually lose thanks to a timely goal by the Wild. Not much to say about this game. Both Josh Harding and Craig Anderson were very good and made some great saves. Martin Havlat scored the only goal late the third off a lucky bounce and a nifty pass by Kyle Brodziak. The Avalanche had a 6 on 4 for a full two minutes but couldn't cash in on it. I'm glad the Avalanche play tomorrow because I just want to forget about this game and the Wild in general.

Unfortunately a few more wins by them and a few more losses by the fLames and Les Ailes, and the Wild might be in the playoffs picture. Considering they are sitting in the 10th spot, 1pt behind Les Ailes and 2pts behind Calgary.

by TheRed on Jan 29, 2010 12:28 PM MST up reply actions

So I have to ask

Do all of you fall into the “we need to have many goals to make an exciting hockey game” camp? Because I thought that was a really good (not great) game. Sure, we lost, and that sucks. but I saw multiple chances (hello Brandon Yip- please keep on getting open in the high slot like that son!), great saves, some epic fuck ups, transition hockey, missed shots, hits (no fights, which would have helped, but that’s not the point), etc. I in no way would have called this a “boring” hockey game, and it was miles away from the Minny of old. Just my opinion, but the Game Thread (which I just read through and made many comments no one will read, except maybe Sandie and Mike) made it seem like I wouldn’t have missed anything if I missed this game. I disagree, I thought it was fun to watch, up til the point where they scored, when I started saying “Fuck” a lot for some reason.

FWIW I’m in agreement as well, though my enjoyment may have been enhanced by my happiness in finally having a game to watch again.

by exredcoat on Jan 29, 2010 8:03 AM MST up reply actions

There were some good transitions and some good exciting rushes, but over all it wasn’t an exciting game. I love a good 1-0, or even 0-0 game when it has good back and forth action, and has good flow. But last night I was not very entertained. I actually found myself wanting to go watch a different game, and that has rarely happened to me even through the second half of last season.

I thought the first period was pretty boring. There was about 2 shifts towards the end of it that were already, but that was about it.

2nd and 3rd were fun though.

Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

by Aph on Jan 29, 2010 8:36 AM MST up reply actions

You may have a point

But I think overall I was just frustrated by the inability of the Avs, due to the Wild’s style of play, to generate decent scoring chances for big chunks of time. There were moments where the game went up and down a little bit, but overall the game had little flow, and you could tell the Wild were playing 4 guys back. And I hate losing to them. Hate hate hate losing to them. Definitely my 2nd least favorite team right now behind the hated winged wheel.

And with the 32nd pick in the 2009 NHL draft, the Red Wings select: Someone other than Ryan O'Reilly. LOL@Detoilet.

That goal was like watching Avs dominoes. Liles got beat, and fell down, the Tucker fell, Anderson was going with the play, but since the puck was bouncing…he fell too and ended up overplaying the puck…

Then just for good measure Ryan Wilson came from behind the whole play and fell over Liles.

It was like a comedy troop on skates…unfortunately that was the only entertainment in a snoozer. Hopefully the Avs saved their energy for tonight

All bias aside, I wholeheartedly disagree on that. There were plays where I said, “Great defensive move, who the hell was that?” only to see it was Liles after the fact.

That’s the feeling I got from Minny: lethargic. Of course they did play the night before, so usual excuses/caveats apply. Still, I felt like the Avs were waiting for a Minny mistake in order to cash in and when the Mild did make one, they couldn’t cash in. Frustrating game to watch.

it was the most boring game of the year. excepting maybe the last wild game, which if I’m not mistaken was also a 1-0 road win for the Adjectives.

Minnesota announcers

I do like the Wild’s team, but the PBP wins the Bubba Award for last night. Teahorn kept mixing up his players based on their last digit. For example, Chris Stewart on a breakaway was Brett Clark and TJ Galiardi was Matt Duchene for most of the night.

Chicago announcers in all sports seem to do that. The Hawks guys do it with the Avs. The Cubs guys (though this has changed) used to call them the Miami Marlins…why? Not sure

His first two games

He called Tanguay, who had switched to 18, “Tanguay,” and Svatos, wearing Tanguay’s old number 40, “Tanguay.” Pretty much for 2 full games. Don’t know if he had an erroneous lineup in front of him or what.

Last night was my 2nd Avs game ever. Bummer that we lost, but I was just excited to see them play. I haven’t seen them since they faced the Flyers many years ago. I know it’s the Wild, and they have a tendency to make games boring, but I found it exciting. Go Avs!

by FireHawkMadLibs on Jan 29, 2010 1:35 PM MST reply actions

Does anyone else feel like the Avs tend to stop playing their game against the Wild? It’s like they get hypnotized into some sort of trance and forget that they have speed and slick moves and stuff.

almost forgot this

Ryan Stoa was interviewed by the Wild guys during intermission. It was kind of amusing because at the end they asked him about his friends watching from Minnesota and he mentioned that he wishes he was back in Minneapolis, but he’d make do with what he had. Don’t think he meant it as a slight to Denver – probably just words coming out funny – but it sure came across like one.

what DID rub me the wrong way was how he said he wasn’t going to try to be the hero, but instead focusing on not making a mistake. That’s not going to get him anywhere in the NHL
