Matt Duchene Named NHL Rookie of the Month
Avalanche forward Matt Duchene is the NHL's rookie of the month for December. He led all rookies in scoring with 13 points in 14 games. He currently has 27 points on the season, one behind Islanders' rookie John Tavares. This sets up a very intriguing match-up tomorrow between the Islanders and Avalanche.
Also considered: fellow Av TJ Galiardi, who had 8 points in December, along with Anaheim's Dan Sexton, New Jersey's Nicklas Bergford, Buffalo's Tyler Myers and Detroit's Jimmy Howard.

It’s not going to happen because rookies just are never considered but.. I can we officially start the grassroots campaign of Galiardi for the Selke? I think he’s the best defensive forward on the Avalanche right now, better than Stastny.
BTW, with this recognition I think Dutchy should buy Hejduk dinner. (and sabotage Svatos’ comeback).
Our new Yelle, maybe with more offensive upside. I really love his game. He’s extremely responsible, plays with energy, checks bigger than he is, and can put the puck in the net, including at huge times. Hard to believe he’s still a rook.
And with the 32nd pick in the 2009 NHL draft, the Red Wings select: Someone other than Ryan O'Reilly. LOL@Detoilet.

Thought about that after I wrote it. Strike maybe above. You’re right. Dan and I used to jokingly refer to Yelle as “the finisher” for his inability to put the puck in the net at times. But he does bring the rest of what Yelle brought to the table. Thank Roy the Avs didn’t package Yelle in one of the worst trades in NHL history.

Hard to believe he’s still a rook.
And when I remember that he is, I chuckle to myself just thinking about what he’ll be like 5 years from now.

I don’t think I agree with that. I would say that Stastny is better in defensive situations when playing 5-on-5 (he been on the ice for the 2nd most defensive situations of any forward in the NHL), but Galiardi is better on the PK (with the 5th most PK time in the league).
Not to jump too far ahead of ourselves, but if Dutchie or Dutchy, or pass the doochie, wins the Calder, do we laugh in the faces of Tampa and Long Island? Do we gloat? Or do we take the high road and just smile to ourselves knowing the future is bright?
since we’re not talking about Detroit, I say high road. I think both Tavares and Hedman have great careers ahead of them, so even if he does win the Calder I don’t think Tampa and NY will be too disappointed

Speaking of Detroit....
Anyone know how that #32 draft pick is working out for them?

I generally only take the low road when dealing with winged wheel fans. Or Dallas fans. Or Wild fans. Or sometimes annoying Flame or BJ fans. But I have no quarrel with bolt or Isle fans.

do you really have to wait...
to laugh in the face of TB and Islander fans? The Avs did what those teams couldn’t: defy early-season projections.

Eh...
Both the Bolts and Islanders are only 3pts out of the 8th spot – granted its in the generally weaker East, but still. I think they Islanders have played much better than expected (not to the degree the Avs have, but still).
The Bolts though, yeah, they were supposed to break out last year, so I can agree on that one.
Really, I don’t think laughing is in order. It’s not like the Isles or Bolts drafted Alexandre Daigle. I can see all of the top 3 picks having long, excellent careers. Had either Tavares or Hedman fallen to No. 3, we would still be having this same conversation.
That being said, I hope Duchene makes Tavares look like a rented mule on his way to a hatty on Wednesday.
If Santa comes down my chimney wearing those Red Wing colors, he's going to wish he didn't exist.
There very few teams I openly laugh at and they are the usual suspects, of course: the Adjectives, Les Ailes, Embers, and Quackers. Am I leaving anyone out?

I know this is a post about honoring Duchene, but I gotta vent a bit; NHL.com has a poll up about who the favorite is for the Vezina this year. Of course they have Brodeur, Miller and Nabby on there. They’ve also got Kipper on there. They even have Luongo and Bryzgalov. But no Andy. WTF is up with that?? Am I missing something, o ye statisticians? grrrrrrrrrr.

NHL Rookie of the Month
and AHL Player of the Month for the same month in the same organization? And people thought we peaked in October.
A little rudeness and disrespect can elevate a meaningless interaction to a battle of wills and add drama to an otherwise dull day.
Matt Who?
Jesus Saves! Yip gets the rebound and scores! Really? That's where I'm going with this? Really? Come on Duchene and SoS start scoring!!

Help me out here fellow MHHers!
The grand high poobah of stats over at Behind the Net put out an open call for stuff we’d like analyzed.
One of my requests was to look into video goal reviews, the % of on ice calls reversed and which players were robbed the most (looking at you Dutchy!). He pulled some preliminary info, but asked if I could give him the games in which our Boy Wonder was jobbed by the refs so that he could see if video reviews were being correctly reported by the league.
I remember that he had one called back in our game @ PIT, right? Seems like they all came in a bunch, so if y’all can help cite the games, maybe we can find out how far ahead of Tavares Ding would be if they didn’t call so many of his back! Thanks for the help!
BTW, if you want good, stats based hockey analysis, you can’t do better than Behind the Net!

Would this include the “unreviewable” goals as well? I can’t recall whether or not he fell victim to any of those, but if so,would they be a part of this?
