How long is this going to last?

I took my first peek at the Divisional standings this morning (October, 14). You have to love the early season. Chaos is in full control.

Examples:

  • Edmonton and Toronto are leading their conferences, and Toronto is leading the NHL in standings points and goal differential.
  • Traditional defensive juggernauts New Jersey, Anaheim, and Chicago have the highest Goals Against numbers.
  • Three Western Conference favorites, San Jose, Chicago, and Vancouver, are sitting on the playoff bubble, with San Jose clinging to the 8th and final spot.
  • Pittsburgh sits at the bottom of the Atlantic Division having played the most games (tied with others at 4) in the league so far.

This time last year, NHL insiders were surely giggling about that fast start in Colorado, and how it couldn't last. They were right, but it was still enough to get the Avs into the big dance. Who is going to be the big surprise at the end of October this year?
