Brunnstrom waived: our Mueller replacement is here

Fabian Brunnstrom has been waived by the Dallas Stars.  Brunnstrom has had a very uneven start to his NHL career.  He had that hat trick early on as a rookie, and a respectable 17 goals in 55 games playing mostly in the top 6.  Then, after the emergence of the Dallas young guns like Benn and Neal, Brunnstrom ended up playing in the bottom 6, where he was simply awful.  He's been completely mis-used by Dallas, imo.

Brunnstrom has good size at 6'2" 212, though he's not a physical player, and he's quite fast with a good shot, good passing, and excellent puck skills.  He plays either wing (as a RH shot).

Ladies and gents, this is our Mueller replacement right here.  He's far from a sure thing, but there's no reason we shouldn't pick him up and try him on Duchene's wing.  He's got the speed and skills to play there, which would allow Jones, Yip, or Galiardi to move down and solidify our third.  This is the skilled depth we need.

Make it happen Sherman!

unfortunately there are teams ahead of us on the list

so he probably won’t be there when the Avs can go after him. Same idea with Souray. What the Avs really need is improvement on D.

could be a nice reclamation project

like Mueller was. Wasn’t the Avs after him way back in the day or was it just Detroit and Dallas?

yes they were, and yes to the reclamation project as well. I don’t know he’ll pan out, but the guy needs top 6 time to succeed, and Dallas wasn’t giving it to him. We have that slot for him:

Galiardi – Stastny – Stewie
Brunnstrom – Duchene – Hejduk
Yip – RoR – Jones

Winnik shifts up when the Avs have a lead. Plus, another winger injury won’t be catastrophic, like it would now. Imagine if Hejduk went down tonight. Scary to even think about.

Bitch, give me your lunch money.

by Cheryl Bradley on Oct 15, 2010 12:30 PM MDT up reply actions

yeah if he clicked with Duchene or even Stastny

the Avs would be very well off. If Mueller came back they would be impossible to contain if completely healthy

For $675K and an expiring contract at the end of the year, I think it’s worth a shot. Here’s what I’m thinking:

Duke/Jones – SoS – Stewie
Brunnstrom/Gali/Jones – Dutchy – Duke/Gali/Jones
Yip – Radar – Jones/Winnik/Gali

2010-2011 Colorado Avalanche: pretty good at hockey since they can't get into the bars yet.

by Hopfenkopf on Oct 15, 2010 2:19 PM MDT up reply actions

I like the idea of Winnick and McCleod playing together on the 4th line again, with Dupuis or Olver at center. That’s a line that could get more ice time, cause havoc and even score the occasional goal. Depth up top makes the bottom more effective. Let’s do this thing!

by niwotsblessing on Oct 15, 2010 2:34 PM MDT up reply actions

i like it

setting our bet aside, I actually liked Yip with Duchene better than Jones. Jones and RoR have serious chemistry, and I liked that pairing a bit more too. If Brunnstrom isn’t claimed (seems likely), I wonder if:

Galiardi – Stastny – Stewie
Yip – Duchene – Hejduk
Winnik – RoR – Jones

might be a good combo.

by thedoctor on Oct 15, 2010 4:51 PM MDT up reply actions

Agree. I think Yip is the power forward that Dutchy needs with a sniper like Duke on his other wing.

How does the waiver line work? Is it first come, first serve? Does it go in the draft order from the last season? I’ve never even thought about it before.

So the NYI can't pick everyone up that gets put on waivers?!?

could be more teams holding off on Brunn just for a better shot on Souray then.

He’s on a one year, $675k contract. We should definitely go for it. Defending Big D seems to think he won’t get picked up at all.

If we do claim him, do we have to keep him at the NHL level for a certain amount of time?

by MalachiConstant on Oct 15, 2010 12:41 PM MDT reply actions

no, but he must pass through waivers to be sent down.

If you thought You hated the way Wolski floated around the ice….

You learn a new level of rage while watching Brunnstrom.

Plus i remember he signed a big’ish contract for a guy that hasn’t proven anything in the NHL if memory serves.

by Ben from Portland on Oct 15, 2010 1:04 PM MDT reply actions

ok 675 isn’t big at all…

but still.

If defending big D watches him every night and thinks he’ll pass through waivers – like grass through a goat – i say we take that as a sign.

no dice.

there’s some irrational hate for him over there, a la Mueller over at Phx. I get why they’re frustrated with him, but I think much of that could be cured with a proper role for him, just like Mueller. They both hated their respective players because they weren’t working hard enough or producing in a 4th line role, and the coaches have gotten pissed at them.

We can take advantage, I think, and if it doesn’t work out, there’s no loss. No risk, high reward. Why wouldn’t we?

Our problems

could all be solved with a good defenseman that has a good point shot. I think our top three lines on any night are more than capable of getting the job done. It’s our power play that sucks.

I’ll say it again: I’d love to pick up Souray…but I just don’t see it happening.

yeah the Avs are about 2 really good D’s away from a serious playoff team… one or both would need a good point shot though.

So at what point to they become “really good Ds” at an NHL level? I think they’ll both get there, but this year?

2010-2011 Colorado Avalanche: pretty good at hockey since they can't get into the bars yet.

by Hopfenkopf on Oct 15, 2010 2:37 PM MDT up reply actions

Shattenkirk will be contributing effectively very soon, maybe even by the end of this year. Cohen I think is going to be on a longer course, and I’m not sure he ever becomes “really good” at the NHL level.

by thedoctor on Oct 15, 2010 2:40 PM MDT up reply actions

in response to this and thedoc's comment

sure Shattenkirk and Cohen could solve that issue when they are completely developed but right now both have items that need worked on (Cohen’s shot accuracy to name one). The Avs have the pieces (Mueller, Shattenkirk, Cohen, etc) to be serious cup contenders but those pieces are probably a year away from being able to make the impact they need to make. So for now the Avs need to do more than “plug the holes” and find pieces that are guaranteed to be such items as “a really good defensemen” if they want to be serious cup contenders. As for Cohen, Shattenkirk will probably have the longer career but Cohen will have the chance to put up crazy numbers.

by zandar on Oct 15, 2010 2:51 PM MDT up reply actions

My point was we have those guys in our system already, we don’t have to draft or trade for them. Yes the defense is a bit behind the forwards in terms of development, but two years ago who could have foreseen that this would be our dilemma?

How far along are they? Hard to say, plus LEM has only played twice this season. They have a hefty road trip coming up so the boys will get some playing time.

by niwotsblessing on Oct 15, 2010 3:16 PM MDT up reply actions

yeah the upcoming games will tell where they are somewhat. The problem the Avs have is that they have too many players on Defense. Between the NHL & AHL they have 12+ veterans/prospects to work with. They could stand to make a 2 or 3 for 1 trade where they unload solid players for really good ones. This is only if they are looking to go farther this year. Otherwise they can continue the team’s growth and see what they have next season.

by zandar on Oct 15, 2010 4:18 PM MDT up reply actions

Foote will likely retire after this year, Hannan’s contract is over after this year, Liles has what a year or two left, and Cumiskey should be traded ASAP>

I think we are set up to move Holøs, Kirk, Cohen and Gaunce into the bigs soon. Like I said, the forwards have matured faster than management thought, they were thinking another year or two, but we are “lopsided” now. And we have to leave some guys in Cleveland.

by niwotsblessing on Oct 15, 2010 4:31 PM MDT up reply actions

The Avs have Elliott and Barrie coming in next year and possibly Hannan and Foote going out as FA so they still will have way too many Ds. They actually have 15 between the 2 teams now so moving one or two would be best.

What’s the difference between this kid and Ryan Stoa, other than speed? I’d be willing to bet that both Stoa and Brunnstrom would succeed getting steady minutes next to Duchene. If we are willing to take on a project and utilize him properly he could be a great p/u.

by niwotsblessing on Oct 15, 2010 1:18 PM MDT reply actions

Brunnstrom is a much more talented guy all around, imo, and Stoa is bigger/plays more like a power forward. Brunnstrom is more of just a big guy with speed — think like the difference between Stewie and Jones. Also, Stoa has shown more defensive acumen than the times I’ve seen Brunnstrom.

And speed is not a small difference either. I’d much rather try Brunnstrom on Duchene’s line, I think he’d keep up far better, both skill and speed wise.

by thedoctor on Oct 15, 2010 1:32 PM MDT up reply actions

I think a great example of what Stoa would be like would be to look at Jones the other night (in Philly if I recall) where Duchene and Hejduk would be racing up the ice and go off side as they had already passed him (and the puck up) despite being behind the play due to Jones being a step or two behind (that game). Brunn would have to slow down for the others to catch up if he was up ahead with the puck. So the Duchene line would have to play differently depending on who the winger is as there is such a large gap between Brunn & Stoa. Brunn is in a very similar boat as Mueller was middle of last year. The risk would cost the team nothing to try as they have an open roster spot and don’t need to move anyone. If he doesn’t work out, they can put him back on waivers.

Don’t claim him. Claim the guy the Thrashers waived. He is a 6’7" 250lbs defense man. He is exactly what the Avs need and he has a expiring contract so if he sucks they can walk away.
