Anderson out, surgery does not seem required.

Bad news, Anderson is in Denver.  Worse news: he's not feeling so hot.  Decent news: recovery won't involve surgery.

Star-divide

Mike Haynes  This just in...Coach Sacco says Anderson has knee injury but no surgery

Bad news again:  Derek may have been right:

The Avalanche Guild  Not sure if this is an "update" or speculation. RT @: Avalanche goalie Craig Anderson might have torn ACL. That would be awful.

Also,  looks like it'll be John Grahame who will get to play backup tomorrow for Peter Budaj (credit to Chia Pet).

Frei adds to it

CALGARY _ Avalanche coach Joe Sacco this afternoon said Craig Anderson had seen doctors back in Denver and the verdict was that the Colorado goaltender will be out “indefinitely” with a knee injury, but that he won’t require surgery.

“It’s going to require some treatment and rehab, and we hope to have him back as soon as possible,” Sacco said after Colorado’s practice in the Saddledome.

The Avalanche has recalled veteran goalie John Grahame, 35, from Lake Erie of the American Hockey League, and he will join the team in Calgary in time for Thursday night’s game against the Flames.

Grahame was called up.

I don’t know who to believe. If Buccigross is right it’s awful. But I would believe Haynes since he is actually with the team

I thought it was pretty Osgood to take a Bertuzzi behind the Draper, but it ended up blowing the Abdelkader of my Kronwall.

Yeah, I’m not really sure, last night Dater said it was a possibility but Andy had to go through more tests today.

Buccigross has information on the subject? What, did Craig Anderson release his injury information through the lyrics of some pretentious band that will be gone from the face of the earth in two years?

Heh, rec for you. Bucci is funny and all, but I don’t think he’s all that “connected” to anyone not named Hakan Loob.

I also really love his articles on youth hockey and being a hockey dad, but as for his musical recs, I don’t know. I am not an expert.

Good news (compared to what it very easily could have been), as it appears to be a sprain.

Bad news because Grahame makes the worst of Rayzor and Boods from the Season that Didn’t Happen look like a Roy/Hasek/Vezina/Fuhr/LaPlante amalgam.

If it doesn’t need surgery, then he didn’t tear it. As someone with a torn ACL AND MCL there is no way I could play goalie (or pro hockey, or semi pro, or skate…). I was told no cutting sports what so ever! Couple of weeks would be my guess…

My understanding is that it’s possible to play with no ligaments whatsoever. Just much harder. Apparently Chelios played for a while with no ACL. I’ve know skiers that ride with no ACL, just a brace.

Hockey- goddamn it's cool.

by TheRed on Oct 27, 2010 5:54 PM MDT up reply actions

I think you could play wing or defense with no ACL or MCL, for a limited time. The playoffs, for example, massively doped up. Goalie, no way. My first, you knee swells up to twice the size of normal and stays that way for a good week. At first, it’s soooo weak that it’s always sliding out of position. No way. I’ve had neither one for 10 years now and all I can do it run in a straight line.

by i2strange97 on Oct 27, 2010 6:07 PM MDT up reply actions

I’m not trying to argue with you on that, just saying that no surgery doesn’t necessarily mean no tear. The guys who can play at any level with a jacked up knee are few and far between. That being said I sure as hell hope it wasn’t a tear, even a small one.

Hockey- goddamn it's cool.

by TheRed on Oct 27, 2010 6:10 PM MDT up reply actions

I wouldn’t be so sure that it’s not an ACL. If the knee is still stable then they may try and wait for after the season for surgical repair. With the present swelling, they won’t know for sure—let’s all keep our fingers crossed!!! Maybe it is only an MCL—maybe 4 weeks+.

by Uncle Richie on Oct 27, 2010 5:31 PM MDT up reply actions

It’s on the Avs official page now too:

Avalanche goaltender Craig Anderson is officially being listed as "out indefinitely" after suffering a knee injury during the pre-game warm-up on Tuesday night in Vancouver.

Anderson’s injury will not require surgery, but he will need to undergo treatment.

After sustaining the injury, Anderson did not sit on the bench with his teammates as they faced the Canucks. Instead of traveling with the team to Calgary for Thursday’s contest, he headed back to Denver on Wednesday morning to receive further evaluation.

The Avalanche is expected to recall a goaltender from its American Hockey League affiliate, the Lake Erie Monsters, to back up Peter Budaj until Anderson returns to health.

he'll be out a few weeks

and Budaj will get all the starts unless he seriously struggles. Better to have Cash get the majority of starts in LE to help build that team’s confidence than to have Graham alternating with Cann and LE struggling in net.

I was thinking this too. The prospects down there need to develop their pro-level skills and without a good netminder, it’s not going to happen as quickly or as well. Cash gives them the best chance, so it could be the thought process. That said, it’s far more important that the Avs make the playoffs. Grahame is not going to help in that area. I’m not feeling optimistic about our chances if he gets the nod. Fortunately, I believe in Budaj and think he will do well.

Bitch, give me your lunch money.

by Cheryl Bradley on Oct 27, 2010 3:57 PM MDT up reply actions

The crappy thing is, if that is the case, Cash is getting screwed with a paycheck while a tool like Graham is going to steal a paycheck he doesn’t deserve. Dang I need a better career.

Supposedly it was a “coaches decision” to send Grahame because he is “playing better.” Though the number seem to indicate a statistical tie.

To kind of add on to what was being said above,

When I was in high school I partially tore my MCL and severely sprained my ACL. I didn’t have to have surgery because it was such a minor tear. My experience was that my sprain hurt A HELL OF A LOT more than the tear and have had this confirmed by others who have had similar injuries. As for the swelling, there would have been ZERO chance of me playing on it because my knee felt like it was the size of one of those mini basketballs in the games at Chuck E. Cheese and my range of motion was so severely limited. Was on crutches for 3 weeks and in a walking brace for another 2 weeks after that. All said, I wasn’t back to playing for about 2 and a half months. That was me in high school with limited access to physical therapy and not seeing a doctor everyday telling me my progress. My guess, Andy is out til December. Hope I’m wrong though.

thats good

If it’s a tear, it would almost certainly be a surgury repair. I sprained my MCL earlier this year, so I know it is possible to come back pretty quick. If that is all it is, he will be back in two or three weeks.

On the other hand, it would be much easier for him to tak himself out allowing the other team an open net.

by Paul X on Oct 27, 2010 9:06 PM MDT up reply actions

or...

I’m a pessimist but if this weren’t Anderson’s big contract year, I wonder if he would have had surgery?

by Dario on Oct 27, 2010 8:10 PM MDT reply actions

Just tossing this out, but a sprain can mean a tear or just over extension of a ligament. If the injury is a level 1 or 2 sprain, then it usually take 4-12 weeks for full recovery. Level 3 sprains need surgery and recovery. Since Andy is not getting surgery, it seems it is more level 2 injury, thus 4-12 weeks. That is just athletic trainers guidelines and definitely not a doctors evaluation.
