It’s all over Twitter from various blogs, but there’s no word from either team. Yet.
MHH: Mr. Howard, Doctor Jones will see you now.
Well, shit
The Providence Bruins just posted it via Twitter. Doubt they would lie.
MHH: Mr. Howard, Doctor Jones will see you now.
Does this really make sense?
Cohen is bigger than Hunwick. He was a higher draft pick. He’s a right hand shot, and Hunwick is a lefty, and the Avs always seem to be short with right hand shots. Hunwick is 4 years older than Cohen.
MHH: Mr. Howard, Doctor Jones will see you now.
bruins.nhl.com has him listed as a member of the Avs now. Here is the blurb from Hockey’s Future:
Talent Analysis
First and foremost, Hunwick is a responsible player in his own zone. He is strong in his defensive positioning and decisive in reading his coverage as evidenced by his team leading +14 rating. He is an asset carrying the puck up the ice and is an integral part of Michigan’s transition game. On the power play, Hunwick moves the puck quickly and makes hard, sharp passes. His shot from the point is average at best.
"Matty’s been a consistent player for us since he started here," said Michigan assistant coach Billy Powers. "He’s a player that teammates look up to, and he’s one of those players where his actions speak louder than words. He’s not a real rah-rah guy, but his leadership shows on the ice. Sometimes he lets mistakes get to him a little too much -That competitive nature can get the best of him, and he needs to work on bouncing back mentally"
Future
It will be Hunwick’s excellent skating and transition game that help to overcome any questions about his physical limitations.
His shot from the point is average at best.
Well, it all makes sense now. We have SO many players with a booming shot from the point, who needs Cohen?
It will be Hunwick’s excellent skating and transition game that help to overcome any questions about his physical limitations.
Cuz we really need more undersized defenseman with good skating on the team.
UGH.

MHH: Mr. Howard, Doctor Jones will see you now.
The stats don’t make much sense to me. But looking at the analysis in Hockey’s Future, it does help me understand it a little. He seems more defensive with a little offensive upside. I wonder if he’s got a good slap-shot. I like that he’s really competitive though, that fits nicely into our team. Also, being older with more experience may help us more now than Cohen would have.
His shot from the point is average at best.
That would be a no for a good slap shot.

According to Sherman
"Matt is another young defenseman who can contribute to our lineup right away,"
If one were being generous with their interpretation of that, it could be read to mean “Kyle Quincey (and or Ryan Wilson) sucks and we needed to get a replacement for him NOW.”
MHH: Mr. Howard, Doctor Jones will see you now.

If dater’s analysis is right—“great wheels and more offensive upside than numbers show”—that sounds strikingly like a Thing One that’s not bad at defense. We’ve already got one, you see?
Sigh, reserving judgment. I wasnt a fan of the Snatch deal either but I like ROB now.

I think this is a mistake. The Avs were fine waiting out the summer and being patient while building internally. Why are they trying to beef up the blue line all of a sudden?

Yeah it is a weird 180.
They finally listened to the criticism of the D maybe? Too many undersized puck moving D and not enough bruisers.

except Hunwick is another smallish puckmover. I like Hunwick, he’s a good player and getting him for Cohen is a steal. I know there’s tons of Cohen love around here, but Hunwick is a young, solid player.
The fit within the organization seems dubious. Who is sitting? Isn’t our D going to get worse with more small guys? I really don’t get it.

Montreal fans were pretty down on O’Byrne but he has been solid for the Avs so far.
Then again, I am talking about Habs fans. Sure, they are voting Carey Price as the best goaltender of all time right now for the all star game, but lets see how they feel about him when he hits a 5 game losing streak.

Please allow me to say
What the hell was that. This makes no sense what so ever. I propose a hostile take over of this team because whoever the hell is actually running it is a retard.
- Holøs is not making the lineup this season. Period. Ever. Which I hate
- Bigger Logjam at D. Say Hunwick plays, who sits? And when Footer comes back in the next few weeks?
- Still no depth at the wings? please, if we were going to be helping the Bruins clear cap then lets at least grab Blake Wheeler for christ sake
- I liked Cohen. And the reasoning here is beyond me. If Wilson is staying in the lineup for his size (which he doesnt use) then why are we trading away a big guy like Cohen (who, though he was overeager, was clearly willing to use his body in the game) I was really looking forward to Cohen in a few years and its going to hurt to see him play so well for the Bruins, we must still be paying them for Ray Bourque.
- Our defense just got smaller, so everyone hoping for a Wilson demotion? I dont see it happening now, I would say its impossible to take Shattenkirk off the ice, but I also thought it impossible for us to trade for another average defender so who knows, sacco seems to be favoring experience right now and if shatty hits a slump he could be back to LEM.
I hate thisI hope to god this is a sign of things to come, a d-man on his way out in another deal FOR A GODDAMN FORWARD.

i don’t get it. we have too many NHL defensemen. Cohen was not my favorite prospect, but what in the world is the point of acquiring ANOTHER smallish puck mover with defensive issue in exchange for a guy still developing? shouldn’t we be getting a guy that, you know, can play defense? why get a defenseman at all?!
my finely-tuned-by-McDaniels bad trade warning sirens are going off.

Why were we high on Cohen? Was it because of his performance at BU? If Shattenkirk can make an entire NHL team look better, imagine what he did for BU.
Jimmy Howard invented the All-Star Game, yet he's not on the ballot.
The entire hype behind Cohen as far as I can tell or remember is “He and Shatty make a hell of a team.”

B’s fan here – assessments above seem pretty accurate. He’s a slightly undersized guy who’s optimistically developing into a puck mover, but has taken a few steps back in the past two years and seems to be losing confidence. He pinches in on offense pretty well but isn’t that sound in his own end most nights
Thanks for the insight :)

I don’t really know the AVs needs, but the bruins didn’t send you a bum. He could still turn out pretty well with a change of scenery and a more veteran partner. Needs a stay-at-home guy to pair with
From the B’s perspective, I like the deal due to our need to clear cap space and while Hunwick’s one of our few quasi-puck movers, we’ve got a couple in the AHL about ready to make the jump, so I don’t think he’ll be missed too sorely.
Also, B’s experimented briefly with Hunwick at forward in the dire parts of last season… he aquitted himself
Sounds like he’d fit in with the Avs forward-moving defenseman system.

There was something up with Cohen. I have no idea what it was. The front office or the coach did not like him as much as they hoped.

Blab on about your “nasty streaks” all you want but obviously he wasn’t showing the coaching and FO anything that Shatty, Holos et al. was showing them. In the three games he played in the majors I wasn’t overly impressed by anything he did either compared to his fellow rookie crop. Someone was going to get traded out of the bunch eventually and there would be a shitstorm just as big – probably even bigger – had it been Shatty or Holos.
But then, it’s obvious you didn’t read any of the other posts detailing how this doesn’t affect the cap floor at all so I don’t know what I’m expecting.

If that was a joke up there, I was unaware that you haven’t said a single serious thing for the last, what, 5 months. Cohen was a mediocre defender who had shown absolutely nothing at the NHL level in terms of that supposed booming point shot. If that was his best feature, he totally screwed the pooch showing it to anyone up there! No nasty streak or whatever you want to call it changes him being another offensive defenseman stuck in the minors.

My post above, the initial statement about the move being to stay above the cap floor, was indeed a continuation of jokes aimed at the Avs seeming unwillingness to spend money on payroll. I’ll bet you right now that Cohen gets at least 50 points next season with Boston.*
*Only if he makes the Boston roster on opening day, plays in all 82 games averaging over 25 minutes per, mans the point on their number one power play for the entire season, and the team as a whole obtains over 120 points on the year, winning the President’s Trophy while also leading the league in goals scored.

Oh dear, they traded one of the 2000 carbon-copy exact same cookie cutter D-men they had lying around. Just because more people liked Cohen than another guy doesn’t mean the trade is a failure. At the very least, Hunwick is a lot more experienced than our plethora of rookies, having played 70+ games for the Bruins last season. I fail to see how losing one of our many, many similar defensemen for someone with a different game with a ton more NHL experience is a bad thing.
I assume a larger trade is coming up anyway, as pointed out earlier.

Fun fact: While watching Boston vs. Atlanta the other night, Hunwick got into a fight and the bench was cheering him for his first professional fight. So, at least he won’t be breaking his hand on other people’s faces.
"I don’t know what happened," said Kyle Brodziak, who scored two goals and tried to spark his team by fighting Chris Stewart. Stewart hit Brodziak so hard and so often, the Avs’ leading goal scorer broke his left hand.
He’s had 2 NHL fights after the other night.

Precursor trade?
That seems to be the most obvious explanation, but since when did the Avs do anything obvious?
Everyone is dumping on Wilson right now but I think he’s just slumping. I don’t want to see him out of the job by any means. Some of our other players have gotten a little more physical this season but nobody hits like Mack Truck. If they trade or sit him consistently I’m going to go all psycho pregnant chick on someone.

I think a nacho night or two might be good for Mack tbh. Not an extended benching, just enough to say hey, look here mate, we’re tired of your shens and you don’t just get to play by default here. But then, he looked a lot better against Minny in the second period on. But then so did everybody.

So… there goes our only hope for a Weber-esque shot from the point. I don’t know any of the prospects that had Cohen’s potential out there.
Kind of an odd deal really. Elliott and Barrie were there and the Avs need winger assets at the moment. Just really odd deal for a guy with a ton of potential that seemed to be well liked by his teammates.
Sad to see him go.

UZ,
I can see that you’re not real excited about Cohen and that’s fine.
For the record, I would not in fact say the exact same thing had any other prospect been traded. The Avs got smaller, puck moving defensemen all over the system. If Elliott or Barrier were traded I wouldn’t have been as disappointed.
I’m curious, why is he the “most expendable of the bunch”?
Let me explain why I believe he was different than most of the defensive depth the Avs have. He’s one of the bigger Avalanche D men. For a roster full of small puck moving defensemen this made him different. He’s got a cannon of a slap shot. No, he didn’t show it in his whole 3 games played in the NHL, it happens. He came up through the US hockey development team and then did three years under Jack Parker. He’s had some of the best development a kid can have. After waiting all this time I would have enjoyed seeing how that worked out. He had more room to develop, there’s no doubt. But I do not brush him with the same stroke as all the other prospects in the system.
It cannot be shown that luck actually exists, hence luck is nothing more than a word used by one in a self delusional assumption of understanding events of which one is informed or which one witnesses. As such, it is a word which superstitious people use to simultaneously presume to have insight into events and, paradoxically, to cease efforts to understand the causes and effects of those same events.
I said this in a different thread, the avs didn’t rate Cohen as high as we the fans did. I thought besides Shattenkirk he was the second best prospect they had on the blueline, obviously they didn’t. Because (almost) every other move they’ve made has worked out, I’ll let this one devlope.
Each of my replies is a work of art, each more brilliant than the last.

I’m not pissed or anything, far from it. I just don’t understand it from the outside looking in. They seemed to like Cohen well enough out of camp with a long look at him. But anyway, what’s done is done.

People need to remember
that Elliott isn’t actually a small puck-moving defenseman. Is he a PMD? Yes. But he’s 6’1, 192. Not exactly small.

I liked Cohen, he was one of very few Avs who wasn’t afraid to get in people’s faces and throw his body around. His own-zone play was a bit spotty, but that’s why you season him in the minors. Hunwick may be a legit upgrade over him, but the niche he fills is one that we’ve already packed to overflowing. It’s a bit baffling why we didn’t take a winger instead.
Most people collect stamps, hockey cards, autos...

Yep, they have to sign Elliott and Barrie to contracts this summer. Finding room to stick all these defensemen will be interesting.
Still I think the Avs will end up swapping a D for a forward before the trade deadline. This is just a precursor to other moves imo.

Weird trade
Must be able to think Hunwick will fit in much better with the Avs than he did with Boston. Sort of like a Mueller or a Winnik.
Hunwick plays forward too
Not sure it’s been mentioned yet, but Hunwick can play forward, and has done so well in Boston in the past. When he’s on, he produced at almost a ppg. But he seemed inconsistent and bounced back and forth a lot between the NHL-AHL too.

The “for a forward” argument isn’t really necessary since this wasn’t more than just a basic player for player swap. Had they traded two guys for a single D-man, it would be more concerning. Otherwise this is just a swap of two somewhat similar players, with Boston gaining some cap space and a somewhat hotter prospect in the deal and Colorado gaining a player with more experience and more versatility than the man he was traded for.

Cohen seems a bit happy with the trade
And by a bit happy, I mean effing thrilled.
""When the Colorado GM called me and he’s like ‘We just traded you,’ I was praying," said Cohen via cell phone. “I had a few cities in mind…and when he said Boston, I was like, ’Wow, this couldn’t be any better!…I’m sort of at a loss for words right now, because there’s not a better place that it’s going to happen — I loved BU,” said Cohen of returning to Hub of Hockey. "I never realized how much I loved it before I left, and I miss Boston in the worst way.
So, there is that. I’m happy for him; if he’s going to get a chance to shine and he likes the trade, then good for him. I’m bummed, but what can you do?

I’ll be good with the trade if Hunwick can help the team this year (though I dread the prospect of Cohen becoming a stud.) Don’t know much about Hunwick… can he hold his own defensively in comparison to the other small, speedy d-men on the roster? (Namely Liles)
This solves everything
Our best goal scorer goes down, so we trade a D prospect for another D man. Perhaps Cohen requested to go back to Boston?
"I don’t know what happened," said Kyle Brodziak, who scored two goals and tried to spark his team by fighting Chris Stewart. Stewart hit Brodziak so hard and so often, the Avs’ leading goal scorer broke his left hand.
What is their to like about this trade? All he is an other “speedy” defense man. In my experience “speedy” defense man really means undersized, complete defensive liability, can’t throw a hit to save their life, and poor offensive defense man. And what did they give up to get him. Just one of their best defensive prospects who was one of the very few Avs defense men that is not “speedy”. Maybe Hunwick won’t suck like every other “speedy” defense man the Avs, why couldn’t Cumiskey have gone. Hopefully this is the move that takes him off the roster for good.
God damn it
You know, the more I think about this, the more I get frustrated. We’ve now traded away two prospects for middling defensemen, and we wouldn’t have had to do either if we had just taken care of business in FA this summer.
It’s taken a whopping 1/4 of the season for us to shitcan building from within. I mean, really. We had all bought in to the build from within because of the success, and now they make a seemingly unnecessary trade that brings in a commodity we already have according to “The Plan.”
"I don’t know what happened," said Kyle Brodziak, who scored two goals and tried to spark his team by fighting Chris Stewart. Stewart hit Brodziak so hard and so often, the Avs’ leading goal scorer broke his left hand.
First of two spleenless additions?
Hunwick lost his spleen in 2009, after a hit in Game 1 of the playoffs with Montreal. He played in all 13 playoff games with the Bruins in 2010, after dressing in a career-high 76 regular-season games.
AD seems to like the move. Also gives an update on Stewie’s injury.

Your 2010-2011 Colorado Avalanche: What's Luck Got to do with it?
by Bob in Boulder on Nov 29, 2010 7:19 PM MST up reply actions
I think Cohen’s ceiling is that of a 4/5 defenseman. He has the booming shot, but it’s not accurate and there are concerns with his skating. I’ve been watching him since his freshman year at BU. I was always excited about his potent slap shot on the point, but my biggest concern was always his defense and decision making. He was even a healthy scratch on occasion due to those reasons.
I don’t want to bag on the kid. I like Cohen. I like what he brings, but the Avs didn’t trade a top pairing defenseman today. Hunwick is not a bad player. Having said that, the Avs already have similar players on the roster. This leads me to believe something else is on the horizon.
So rather than being upset, I’m going to let this play out and see how thing unfold.

I agree that they already have similar players to Hunwick, but Cohen isn’t untouchable imo. I can understand being disappointed, but this team has many quality defensemen in the prospect pipeline. The only confusion I have is adding a similar player that they already have in the system. Cohen being traded isn’t necessarily the issue. I think we need to give this time and see if the Avs have anything else up their sleeve.

Gus Young was Pracey’s first real dark horse pick. He’s got a long way to go before we know how that pick turns out. High school picks are notoriously tough to get right.
Exactly, add to the fact that Young has only played in a few games this year due to injury, it’s hard to gauge him at this point.

I can easily explain this. The Avs are going to only order one size jersey from now on, so we need to find players that literally fit into our system.
"I don’t know what happened," said Kyle Brodziak, who scored two goals and tried to spark his team by fighting Chris Stewart. Stewart hit Brodziak so hard and so often, the Avs’ leading goal scorer broke his left hand.

When we traded for O'byrne...
it was OK, Sherman was obviously desperate
NOW on the other hand, makes absolutely no sense, seeing as someone who is deserving of a spot is going to have to sit so Hunwick can play
Plus that, Cohen actually showed a great deal of physical hate for the other team, as the Avs success increased in the game, his pissed-offness reflected that…which i enjoyed watching
So, it seems like a very, very short minded trade to throw another guy in what we know as the Avalanche ‘clusterfuck’ D corps
Garrett those socks make you look homeless!
by Chris S Roberts on Nov 29, 2010 7:12 PM MST reply actions
“Deserving of a spot” is a relative term. I know nothing about Hunwick, so I reserve judgment on that, but I was disappointed to hear that it was Cohen to go. I thought he looked like he could become a stud and he has an attitude towards people screwing with his teammates that I like. That said, people who make other teams accountable for screwing with Avs don’t fit well into the game plan I guess (not that I’m looking a the record of relative softness around here or anything).
I guess I agree with those who are upset because Cohen represents a piece that isn’t well represented and that it looks from here that Hunwick becomes yet another of what the Avs already have.
EVERYBODY BE COOL!!!

Colby who?
Really! What difference does it make?
Despite popular opinion the management of this team knows the score and they don’t make dumb moves, or moves just for the sake of making moves. There is a larger plan here and/or we are at least getting an NHLer for an AHLer.
With the recent spate of Kyle (and Wilson) hate I would think that some here would be excited about the potential of this move….
"Me fail English? That’s unpossible!"
Don’t forget the small pockets of Holos hate. I’m hoping that some of the hated ones can be dealt for a quality winger, especially with Stewie out. And maybe this helps to pave the way for that.

Garrett those socks make you look homeless!
by Chris S Roberts on Nov 29, 2010 7:23 PM MST up reply actions
I don’t think any of the moves have been “magic” . I think that they have been quality well-researched moves that have turned out exactly the way management has planned.
I have been as critical as anyone about the lack of deals over the summer, but this far into the year I am happily eating my words. This team is good, the depth is obviously (and thankfully) strong, and healthy we are a playoff caliber team. Now if we can put some pieces in place so that we are in a position to get the few missing pieces over the next year we can be in a place to be a dynasty.
"Me fail English? That’s unpossible!"
I’m not sure how you feel the depth is strong. if it were strong we wouldn’t be worrying about who to trade and who to trade for.
Hockey- goddamn it's cool.
If we weren’t strong we’d be 15th in the western Conference right now.
"Me fail English? That’s unpossible!"
I’m not saying we have 12 capable wings here, but through the call-ups and injuries I feel that the players have done a fantastic job and stepped up beyond anyones expectations.
"Me fail English? That’s unpossible!"
I believe there are areas where we have depth and are strong. Center and small puck moving defensemen for example. But we aren’t exactly bursting with good winger talent and that’s something they could have addressed in the off season to give them better all around depth. Maybe we just disagree on how deep we are. (cue TWHS jokes)
Hockey- goddamn it's cool.
Good winger talent?
Hejduk, Stewart, Jones, Mueller, Galiardi with Yip, Winnik, Porter rounding out players who can play in the top 9. In addition they have Olver & Stoa in LE. I would say they are deep all around at forward otherwise the injuries would be hurting more than they are.
2010-11 Colorado Avalanche: The Asskickers of the Amazing
Hejduk and Stewart are proven top sixers. I think Jones can get there when he stays healthy. I unfortunately don’t think Mueller is going to last long. I hope I’m wrong on that. Galiardi is a better third liner, although his versatility puts him in the 1st or 2nd line at times too (of course, we had Arnason as a top line center once as well). Yip, Winnik, and Porter are all 3rd-4th liners. Olver and Stoa are in LE because they haven’t proven they can play at the NHL level for long, esp not as top line wingers.
I don’t think anyone around here would have argued about getting another decent to very good (25+ goals) top line winger. Who that might have been, I’m not sure. I think the Avs felt they would find one in the ranks, and maybe they will.
We have a ton of 3rd-4th line guys, we lack more than Hejduk and Stewart in the top two. Like I said I think Jones will be there when healthy, but we could still use more. The fact that our lower tier guys are pretty good lower tier guys is what has kept us from falling out of contention. But they aren’t going to beat the cream of the NHL, as has been shown recently in losses to Detroit, Vancouver, and two absolute shit show teams in NYI and the freakin oilers.
Hockey- goddamn it's cool.
this
we dont have that one guy who can take over a game and carry the team. Sorry, but Stewart isnt there yet, he’s still figuring the pro level out and frankly cant be depended on every night as we’ve seen with this slump and neither can any of the guys you listed. What we’re missing is a real, bonified all-star player and unfortunately for us I dont see the avs making any sort of play for one now or in the summer
It's all about the A-nderson
by Cole D Hamilton on Nov 29, 2010 9:29 PM MST up reply actions
I share your desire for such a player and would love to have one. That being said, who is such a player? Ovechkin? Yes. Crosby? Yes. Stamkos? Looks like maybe so. Who else? Sakic prior to 2007? Yes. Foppa prior to the lockout? Yes. So, are we talking generational talents of whom there are perhaps 2 or 3 playing at any given time in the league? Maybe I’m setting the bar too high here, but who would you have the team go and get? What would you have them surrender in order to do so?
2010-2011 Colorado Avalanche: pretty good at hockey since they can't get into the bars yet.
I personally am looking for another stewie/hejduk type. It’d be great for a generational player, but they just aren’t available often. That’s why people were so gung ho about Kovalchuk, it’s rare to see a guy like that up for grabs, you usually have to draft and develop them yourself. But someone who could consistently get 25+ goals, well, I’m all for it. I don’t have any names because I’m too lazy to go look for them. Maybe they don’t exist. Maybe they wouldn’t want a short term contract at their peak production. But I’m sure there are better guys to be had than some of our plethora of lower tier guys.
Hockey- goddamn it's cool.
I’m with you. It was the comment about Stewie not being there yet that sparked my response. I don’t disagree, per se, that Stewie isn’t at the point where he can look at the team on any given night and simply make them win by force of will alone. SuperJoe could do that, Foppa could do that. Couldn’t any other Av in history do that – on any given night.
I’d be looking for a Stewie / Duke level of player too.
IMO, this is the real test of Jones’ mettle. SoS and Dutchy too. If they can put this team on their backs and pull them through till Stewie and Ferris get back, well then, we may just have ourselves something here.
2010-2011 Colorado Avalanche: pretty good at hockey since they can't get into the bars yet.

I agree that they have some depth, I just don’t think they have enough. As has been previously said, if they could have addressed this in the off season with a good ufa or two, we wouldn’t be in this situation. Maybe they just didn’t fell comfortable with any of the UFA prospects, but still.
Hockey- goddamn it's cool.
Not sure I could name anyone without going back and looking at the lists. I thought there were a few reasonable arguments made during the summer of Kovie, but I never really took too much of a stand on any particular person (I was pretty much 50/50 on Kovie, and in hindsight I’m ok with not having him). I just thought they could have had almost anyone on a short term deal with the space they had cap wise to prevent just this sort of situation.
As I said above, maybe they didn’t feel anyone was a good fit here, or maybe they didn’t anticipate that they would once again be among the league leaders in man games lost to injury. Whichever, it is hurting them right now. My hope is that Yip turns it back on as he has been “regressing to the mean” pretty damn hard this season. I think that hottie of his is keeping him too distracted.
Hockey- goddamn it's cool.

Something we overlooked
Last year Hunwick was on a lot of MHH poster’s trade deadline/FA wish list. In fact, a lot of “experts” had him on a lot of teams’ wish list. There is a possibility that he was a player the Avs Front Office had their eyes on and took a chance when it came. Lacroix has a very good rapport with Boston and this may have worked for both sides.
We are and have in no way gutted our prospects nor have we scrapped the building from within. This is not an instant fix, but the Avs had the chance to get Hunwick for only a prospect and took it.
