Daily Cupcakes - December 20th, 2010
Once again, these are not the cupcakes you are looking for, but they are still somewhat delicious. Albeit short...
Former Avalanche Bates Battaglia, who mercifully only spent 17 games with the Avalanche before being traded for Steve Konowalchuk, is still kicking around and recently signed with the Rochester Amerks of the AHL:
Battaglia signed a pro tryout contract in the morning and, nine hours later, was playing his first game as an Amerk."I have done this more times than I guess I would care to admit," Battaglia said of joining a new team. On his third shift of the game he proved that hockey is just hockey, regardless of who you're playing with, as he set up AJ Jenks for the game's first goal, at 5:26 of the first period.
Another former Avalanche just notched a Gordie Howe hat trick in the AHL. To add insult to injury, it was against the Lake Erie Monsters. To add even more insult to injury...it was TJ Hensick.
Slick center T.J. Hensick -- the Rivermen scoring leader -- notched a goal, an assist and had a rare fight to complete a Gordie Howe hat trick and help Peoria to a 4-0 victory over the Lake Erie Monsters before 3,476 at Carver Arena.
From the I May Have Been Wrong Department: 5 Avs have more goals this year than Ilya Kovalchuk. None of them are -21.

HOLY CRAP!!
Check out Kovie’s +/- …. he’s a -96 and has only managed a positive rating in ONE year for his NHL career. He was even a -1 in the playoffs. He is averaging 73 PPG, which isn’t too bad admitedly rocks, but if he’s that big of a defensive liability, I can’t imagine why anyone would think he was worth that much cash.

Did you just say he is averaging 73 Points Per Game, or averaging 73 Power Play Goals ?
Either way, I am confused. Maybe it was 7.3 Power Play Goals? Now I am getting that feeling that I am missing something obvious.

points per game.

Again, he was on awful Thrashers teams (and now an awful Devils team) for his career. Joe Sakic was -102 over his first 3 seasons, and -97 over his first 9 seasons (like Kovalchuk).
Not that Kovy even compares to Sakic, but it’s more evidence that ± is an awful stat for determining defensive prowess.

Both the Devils and the Thrashers were/are much better teams without him. Team stats don’t lie. Good thing the Avs brass had the foresight to understand this.
While true, there’s a lot more to it than just the stats.
A whole lot of New Jersey fail preceded Kovy’s horrendous season, and his agent should be shot for letting him sign in the swamp.
First, the trade for Kovy stripped New Jersey of depth.
Then the signing of Kovy put them in a cap crunch and made previous failures such as Rolston’s contract even more failtastic.
But mainly, the Devils never needed a top-line left wing. They may as well have traded for Luongo or Lundqvist with as much need they filled in acquiring Kovy.
The Avs had none of these three problems, and while it’s obvious the Avs don’t need offense and are better off not taking on that contract, I don’t think Kovy would have had the same outcome here as he’s had in New Jersey. A player like Kovy would be having the time of his life with the Avs top six. Just look what Flash is doing, and they have similar play styles. Who knows, after this year, we may not be able to afford Flash.
And as far as Atlanta goes, they should get a lot of credit for turning what would have been Kovy’s salary into some very shrewd moves. Big Buff is lighting it up. Ladd seems to be sorely missed by the Blackhawks and is now Atlanta’s captain. Throw in Pavelec being among the best goalies in the league right now and that’s where that team’s success comes from. Everyone was laughing at Atlanta after their trades, but Atlanta’s GM Rick Dudley is probably hanging out with Sherman, sipping brandy, and having a great laugh at everyone else right now.
Long story short, I just hope future players and agents realize what an oppressive contract will do to a team and its ability to win.
"Oh, that's Brock. He's my dad's bodyguard. One time I saw him kill a guy with a sock full of party snaps!"
All good points. It’s a whole lot more complex than just saying Kovi’s teams are better without him. They aren’t the same teams, so it’s not a very valid comparison.

I Agree on many points. The Devils had no business making that deal with Kovi. Also, the deal, as it is, will likely scare other teams from making similar mistakes in the future. If not, no problem, as long as it’s not the Avs.
I do think that it’s interesting that the teams Kovi plays with suck when he’s there and not without him. Some personal stats will not show this, while team stats will. IMO, the Avs are much better off doing what they did and not going after high-priced FAs. I think the better approach is to get young, mid-level (Fleischmann, Hunwick, Winnick etc…) guys with potential and smaller contracts that would be easier to unload, should they not workout.
From the I May Have Been Wrong Department:
I’m not sure he’d be putting up those same stats in an Avs jersey (not that I want him in one). He’s playing on an awful, handcuffed team and the rest of the locker room likely hates him. It would be tough to be successful in that situation no matter who you are….
Everyone throw some salt over your shoulders, it’ll be ok.
Yeah, when we talk about Kovy, it’s “he’s ruining the team,” but when we talk about Langenbruner, it’s “that team is just awful.” Right now, I don’t want any of that New Jersey stench coming anywhere near Colorado.
I would say Kovy is regretting his decision, but he just made more money taking a dump this morning than I will all year. Plus, I hate the Devils, so all is right in the world.

Bababouy would like to see Zach Parise in an AVS uniform !
The Devils won’t be able to sign him since they spent all the money on Kovy, LOL !

Hensick fighting
He fought with Mark Olver, not much credit to Hensick, but I give Olver credit for not taking crap. Yeah, I’m being totally biased but I’m shouting out for our boys because the folks in Cleveland had a hard weekend- LEM lost 3 and Tim Tebow had more rushing yards than Peyton Hillis.

Rumor has it that Olver took away one of Hensick’s donuts.
My fantasy hockey team sucks. But at least I'm not a Red Wing sellout.

Reading that article I got to say that Hensick is the most humble NHL wash-out of all time.
It cannot be shown that luck actually exists, hence luck is nothing more than a word used by one in a self delusional assumption of understanding events of which one is informed or which one witnesses. As such, it is a word which superstitious people use to simultaneously presume to have insight into events and, paradoxically, to cease efforts to understand the causes and effects of those same events.
I miss him more and more every day.
Mile High Hockey: Significantly luckier than the experts predicted, just like the Avalanche.
