this is for those of us that are broncos fans and avs fans, and hate MHR. I know there’s quite a few of us. :)
"I’m predicting 50pts in the NHL for Hensick next season. Anyone want to put $20 on it?" - DetAvs, Jun 18, 2010 3:45 AM EDT
Wait
MHR is now completely on board with this. I mean the Broncos always make the right decision, so this has to be the right decision.

Whoa, I’m not nearly in that elite level of class.

I was at the St. Louis game last week, best part of the game was that we had snow early in the 4th Quarter. McDaniels was in way over his head, and was too stubborn to even realize it. Helps me recognize that as much as I wish Sacco would fire Quincey, Wilson and Cumiskey out of a cannon, he isn’t even close to being really stubborn.

Sigh.
Not even 2 full years given. So now we’re a trainwreck AND we don’t even give the guys we pick much of a chance. What a sterling rep we must have.
A little rudeness and disrespect can elevate a meaningless interaction to a battle of wills and add drama to an otherwise dull day.
well, for what it’s worth, word from Schefter is that the Spygate 2 stuff is the reason for the sudden firing, and they may be trying to fire him with cause (void the contract).

That would at least make sense.
But I really don’t think this team is far from another 10 win season. There’s talent all over the roster. Sigh. Being a Broncos fan didn’t used to suck this much.

The talent is there for better than we have gotten. McDaniels was a brilliant playmaker, but was a TERRIBLE playcaller. I have no idea why he would make the playcalls that he did. He never played with urgency, either, and that bothered me. He wasn’t good with players that he didnt like, and probably doted on the ones that he did. But I still hate that he was given a promise by Bowlen to have four years, and he approached building the team like actually had those four years, and then was fired after one and a half. I hate losing as much as anyone else, but I also hate snap decisions. Waiting til the end of this season, carefully evaluating what happened during its course, and THEN making a decision would have been a much better option. Nothing is gained by doing it now, except for maybe feeding the fans some Tim Tebow.
Thanks Joe...
Brocs have lost 17 or their last 22, and there may be an out of McD’s contract. Bowlen may have promised him 4 years, but it is clear that he can’t deliver, and so it is time to go in a different direction. What they gain is two years, and the good will of Broncos fans right now.

Is it clear that he can’t deliver? Whats another couple of games matter? If he could learn from his mistakes [and he definitely can, its just a question of how long it will take], would we be better off? I just don’t see how we are really going to benefit at the moment. An interim coach will likely not be able to handle the team and make the outcome of the season any better, and any new head coach is probably going to blow the team up and turn it into what he wants it to be. I just think that Bowlen rushed this decision at this time.
Do I like the way the last couple seasons have gone? Hell no. But I don’t see them getting better any time soon either.
Thanks Joe...
In regard to McDaniels capacity to learn from mistakes I have two words that proves he can’t: Peyton Hillis.

How do those two words prove that he can’t learn from mistakes? Terrible mistake, but the fact is that he WILL learn from that.
Thanks Joe...
The mistake was not recognizing Hillis’ talent from his prior play and then in not utilizing him on a struggling offense- LAST YEAR. Too damn stubborn to pay attention to a clock-eating ground game that was standing behind him on the sidelines every Sunday. The fact that he traded Hillis is final proof that he does not learn from mistakes. McD will NEVER be a head coach in the NFL again.

I HATE the idea that we abandon the ‘rebuild’ halfway thru. If they fired him because he wasn’t winning, I would be uberupset. I could have seen him go at the end of the year, but suddenly, just like this? I hope it DOES have to do with spygate 2.0, but I dunno.
If the contract can be voided, it would go a looong way to explaining what happened.
Thanks Joe...
They’re still paying Banana-han, why pay 3 head coaches? Only CU has that kind of money…

That was the major reason that I thought we might have to live with the McDaniels’ system beyond next year. I didn’t really think that McD would last thru the offseason, especially after failing to put up more than six points in a crucial game after proving that he could put up 48 last time the teams met, but the timing of this whole thing just seems odd.
Thanks Joe...
The thing about the Broncos this year is that I can't watch them and see any hope for the future.
When I watch the Avs, I see these amazing things that are going to happen down the road. I see a planned route that the team is going down, with the prospects developing, the youth and energy that the team brings, and wonderful things on the horizon. Even during the season-that-shall-not-be-named, we saw some of that. We knew when contracts were going to expire, we knew that Tony G was not going to last thru the offseason, and we knew that something big was going to change. It happened a lot quicker than we were expecting, but we did see it coming.
I got no such reassurance over the last two years of watching the Donkies play. I wasn’t sold on the drafting of Moreno in the first, or Ayers, or trading our next years first for a second. I didn’t really like seeing the development of any player over the entire course of last year besides the emergence of Doom as a top-notch rusher. I was pissed when Mike Nolan left for mysterious reasons. I didnt like the next draft when Dez Bryant was still available and we took Damarius Thomas. Altho the guy is going to be a quality talent in the league, he’s not nearly as good. Does the organization really think that Eric Decker is going to be the next Wes Welker, or even the next Eddie Royal? I just cannot understand any of their drafting decisions.
Development-wise, what could the point of drafting and developing Alphonso Smith [not to mention trading a 2010 1st to get him], and then TRADING HIM AWAY for another blocking tight end? How could that possibly make any sense? And the Tebow development… When it comes to McDaniels’ ability to train QBs, I do believe in him. But the fact that Tebow never got a chance to do a single thing that tested him made me wonder about his real NFL ability. Shielding a player from himself can still hamper his development.
I just never really had any hope that this team was going to do anything more than get points over the next year or two. Then, with the aging D and lack of prospects, they were just going to fall back into the throes of mediocrity. What was to be gained by that? Nothing.
I remember wandering over to MHR after McD was signed. I ran into Doc over there [I think it was Doc, might’ve been Bibby], and we got off onto a uncommonly logical tangent about unproven coaches. He argued that a coach was essentially bad until proven good, and I argued that coach was good until proven terrible. He opted for the “McDaniels is going to have to prove that he can be anything approaching a real NFL coach, and not some worthless wannabe”, and I tried out the “I trust Bowlen’s judgement; if he sees something in this guy, I will let him have his way and believe.” Well, even tho McD has some crazy potential to be a good offensive coach, he can’t run a defense to save his life, and he seems to be a tyrant hiding behind an open door.
I didn’t like his tenure here, but all in all I don’t think we are too much worse off than when he was hired. The only thing that was lost was two years of terribleness, and we have gained the knowledge that we are probably going to have to start all over with someone new. It was all just a worthless waste of time.
Thank god I love the Avalanche five times as much.
Thanks Joe...
