Around SBN: Tottenham's Plans for Northumberland Stadium Approved

Olympic Open Thread: February 14th

Well, the two-week NHL shutdown known as the Olympics is upon us.  MHH wasn't around for the Torino games, so we don't have experience with the lull.  I'm interested to see what we do.  Don't fret, we have some plans, I'm just curious to see what our great community does with two Avalanche-free weeks. Feel free to discuss all things Olympic in this thread.  I'll try and have one up every day for general discussion purposes. Toss out any ideas you have for topics you'd like to see covered during the Olympic break. Go USA!!

Pittsburgh-area rink roof collapses
Crews search for unaccounted for people, Canada-U.S. youth teams in tourney
Last Updated: Sunday, February 14, 2010 | 7:02 PM ET Comments6Recommend18
The Associated Press
An emergency official said there are people unaccounted for after a partial roof collapse Sunday at a suburban Pittsburgh ice rink.

Mike Stangroom, director of operations for Rostraver West Newton Emergency Services, said everyone who got out of the Westmoreland County rink is OK, but crews are searching the building with cadaver dogs.

Stangroom said he doesn’t know how many people were in the Rostraver Ice Garden when a 30-by-60-metre section of it collapsed Sunday afternoon.

He said a youth hockey tournament between U.S. and Canadian teams was being held at the rink, about 50 kilometres southeast of Pittsburgh.

The cause of the collapse hasn’t been determined.

That's terrible news.

I’m going to guess snow accumulation will be the official cause of the collapse.

The Avalanche, clearly, are down with No PP.

by Mike @ MHH on Feb 14, 2010 6:33 PM MST up reply actions

Most likely, or after years of heavy snow it weakened the structure and they didn’t reinforce or repair it.

Reading one site suggest that the building is what we call a ‘pre-engineered metal building’ in the business. Those things are designed to the gnat’s ass so as to be cheap. Sometimes you get what you pay for.

The Avalanche, clearly, are down with No PP.

by Mike @ MHH on Feb 14, 2010 6:39 PM MST up reply actions

Same report also stated that they hadn’t found anybody, but people were unaccounted for. Hopefully it’s just confusion stemming from the tournament and nobody is truly missing.

The Avalanche, clearly, are down with No PP.

by Mike @ MHH on Feb 14, 2010 6:40 PM MST up reply actions

That’s the hope. I’m sure it was pretty hectic when things started collapsing. People will have dispersed.

I was watching that game, and as much as I love to see the USA win, I was really excited when China got that goal (it was either 11-1 or 10-1 at that point). We dominated to the point where our SOG’s were pretty much constantly 10X the Chineses. It was nice to see them get a little something.

Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

In the 18-0 game, I just felt bad for them.

I stopped watching at the 8-0 mark. Unless it’s in an NHL game where the teams are essentially evenly matched and in any given game anyone can win, I just can’t stomach huge wins like that 12-1 or 18-0 Slovakia slaughter.

The Chinese Short Pairs couple was really outstanding. They set a record high score in Short Pairs. Everyone else will have to catch up to something that special.

Women’s Hockey – Finland up 3-1 over Russia. Also, USA beat up on China 12-1. There was an amazing goal in that one, you guys should really check it out.

But here is one I have for all hockey, if you live in the Denver area and have DirecTV. Actually, just go to the NBC site and it is pretty easy to customize TV listings for whatever sport you are looking for and in your area.

And with the 32nd pick in the 2009 NHL draft, the Red Wings select: Someone other than Ryan O'Reilly. LOL@Detoilet.

LIVE! LIVE! LIVE! I want to see it LIVE!

I’m totally fed up with NBC’s Olympic coverage, or lack of. We here in the Mountain Time Zone, one hour removed from the Vancouver Pacific time zone and home to the highest percentage of Olympic TV watchers, are forced to wait two hours for a re-broadcast of NBC’s Eastern-centric babble. In case you haven’t noticed, you can’t open a browser window, twitter feed, turn on the radio, or any number of other media without already hearing results. How much fun is it to sit through all the ads when you already know the results?

In 2008, over 2200 hours of Olympic coverage were available streaming. This year? Under 400! And the only things you can (legally) stream live in the US are curling and hockey (At least we get that, I guess). All the Alpine events, Nordic racing, and everything else that could be seen live during the day is shut out. NBC believes that the biggest audience for the Olympics is women, and they don’t care for anything except ice dancing and figure skating. Supposedly, this is a preview of the future, as NBC and Comcast (one of the largest internet providers) merge and NBC struggles to keep people in front of the boob tube, where they will be fed endless heart-tugging stories between advertisements.

In the interest of Sport, I refuse to have my Olympics sensored. I want my events live, and I want to know the results immediately, like the rest of the world. While it is not easy to find streams, they are out there. The CTV stream is blocked for US ip addresses, so you need to use a proxy to get around that. I found this stream, which has been great! Its from ESPN Europe. This is another good list of links. If you find any others out there, please post them for our enjoyment. As a German Backpacker would say, “Reason #37 why America sucks. No Streaming Olympic broadcast. What is this, the age of Charlemagne?”

Paging Mr. Calder and Mr. Adams... your trophies will be found at 1000 Chopper Circle.

Agreed.

I thought the coverage was OK at first, but about a day into it I realized just how incredibly terrible it is. I have a rant somewhere above with some of my thoughts, but no real solutions. Really I want to see it in HD because its so gorgeous, and the only way to see that is on fuckin NBC.

Terrible. Is this what we have to look forward too as more entertainment corporations start to fall apart, only to be gobbled up into a huge conglomerated monopoly of idiocy?

Dear Canadians: Do you think I could come hang out with you in Canadia? Love, Matt.
