Mike's Miscellany™ Vol. VIII
Some random rumblings from the absentee contributor here at MHH (no, not Joe, the other one).
- IOC is giving US Olympic goalies Ryan Miller and Jonathan Quick a hard time about stuff they have on their masks. Specifically, "Miller Time" and possibly the tribute to his cousin on Miller's mask and the "Support Our Troops" emblem on Quick's. I'm starting to come up with some really appropriate new names for the IOC. They all start with "Idiotic" and end with, well a word that Joe won't let my use on the blog.
- This just in: Detroit writer completely misses the point of allowing NHL players in the Olympics. He also seems to be an Alex Ovechkin hater.
- Speaking of Ovie, he's rockin' some new kicks for the Olympic Winter Games. That doesn't look like sweet van art AT ALL.
- Peter Jaffe hopes the upcoming Men's Hockey games will help clean up some of the violent issues in the sport.
- Dater has a nice piece up about Paul Stastny stepping onto the world stage. But he still takes the time to call SoS out for under-performing.
- Copper and Blue has a good write-up for the Group A pool at the Olympics.

The IOC is making the NFL look downright open when it comes to what stays and what goes. Granted the NFL’s dictatorship is about branding (hey, WHO DAT is OURS DAMMIT!)
I am hoping the U.S. can pull off some kind of miracle (no pun intended) to get a medal. I don’t think they are as bad as most people thinkg…but I don’t see them on level with a Canada or Russia.
As for Russia, I think they might surprise and win the whole thing. For some reason I see them putting up about 8 goals a night…if they can have some competent defense and goaltending…watch out

Advice to Red Wing Fans: If you don't want the reputation of being whiners, then stop whining about EVERYTHING. Your team is allowed to lose games, and when they do, it's not always because of the refs or Gary Bettman, and you seem to continuously claim
With Bryz and Nabby in net, it won’t be the goaltending, but it may be the defense in front of them.
The Avalanche, clearly, are down with No PP.

I forgot he’s on Team Norway.
Anyone know what number he’s wearing on the team?
I’m going to have to keep an eye out for him tonight.

Since this is miscellaneous I am going to Bitch.
Today in the cafeteria these three guys were trying to figure out who is on the American hockey roster. They were asking around to see if anyone knew who they were missing. They missed SoS and Quick so I told them.
The guy responds that Stastny hasn’t played in the NHL in a number of years. When I told him that he was thinking of Stastnys’ father and that he has two sons playing in the NHL he argued with me that I was wrong, that I knew nothing of hockey much less of the NHL and that there was no way he was on the American team and I shouldn’t try to learn. Bah- Stupid guy!
Vent over.

Oh, and that is the PERFECT time to place a bet. That guy would back-peddle so fast he’s trip over himself.
Haha, probably not...

I got a phone call from a mate in an airport at 1.00am on a wednesday morning to tell some dude that the Avalanche were from Colorado, I argued for about a minute and he hung up on me.

It’d be awesome to see the look on his face if SoS gets a goal when the US plays Canada…

It’d be awesome to see his face when SoS is on the ice period.
So there were people doing some sort of charity raffle thing today. You could win Callaway clubs (I already have a set of these so I didn’t pay much attention to that), a watch, or one of two Crosby Canada jerseys. I was disappointed to find out that both the jerseys were Crosby…. There are so many great players on Canada, why the hell would you only give that option? Not everybody loves him.

I’d sell the golf clubs and use the money to buy a Stastny USA or Foppa Sweden jersey. The clubs are probably right handed anyway, so they wouldn’t do me any good.

I swing as a lefty too. I’m right-handed but play all sports with the left, go figure!

If I win (which is a huge if) I’d probably go to a jersey store and see if I can get it changed to someone else.

Crazy! I’m a righty but swing lefty. My little brother (also on MHH) is the awesome. He’s a lefty who swings right. I think something got miswired…

Apparently it has something to do with what eye is more dominant and how you visualize the ball leaving your body. For me leading with my right side feels much more natural, but who knows…

I believe you can stream it live from here: http://watchvancouverolympics.com/february-16-2010-schedule
But does anyone know if it’s going to be on TV?

I had to work as well, and of course we don’t have access to the Olympics at work (school). So I have it Tivo’d and am hoping it doesn’t get mentioned during the Women’s game against Russia…which after 40:00 is another blow out. ^ PPGs an Olympic record.

Detroit writers ... (sigh)
The guy in Detroit must have missed the last couple weeks of the year. We had a pro bowl and an NBA all-star game, and one of the biggest complaints about the games are that they are bastardized versions because they have no meaning. Baseball actually gave the winner of the all-star game home advantage in the World Series in order to add meaning to the game and try to make players give a rats ass.
Well, guess what. These Olympic hockey teams are all star teams and the games mean a whole helluva lot. These all-stars will be working their asses off, playing for not only financial reward and personal reward, but for the pride of their country. Players want to be on these teams. Players fight to be on these teams. Players are butt-hurt when they are left off these teams. You don’t have players skipping out on the Olympics because they want to heal up like Lidstrom did for the all-star game.
Having NHL players in the Olympics is better than any all-star game, plus it’s a whole tournament.

Hejduk
Is resting up instead of playing in the Olympics. I don’t think he would have gotten that procedure if he didn’t get that extra 2 weeks rest.
But watching a hand full of All Star games (Also known has Olympic Hockey) is awesome for Hockey fans. Excuse me for saying this but I’m pretty entrigued by the thought of what Malkin, Datsyuk, Ovie, and Kovalchuk can do on the same team. Can’t wait for more Avs players to go in the future!

Hejduk is an good point. But I counter your Hejduk with the ill-advised speedy return of Franzen or the fact that Forsberg is hauling his busted old body to the Olympics despite having nothing left to prove. Perhaps he’s hoping for Stamp 2: Electric Boogaloo.
I’m totally rooting for the USA, but I don’t think any true hockey fan isn’t looking forward to a Russia/Canada matchup. It’s likely that the first faceoff between these two may have 12 hall of famers on the ice, most of whom will be in their prime.
Now that T.J. Galiardi has accepted me as his FB friend, can I officially say that I'm one of the cool kids?
It’s something the players love and want to do, How often do they get to represent their country once they make the NHL. How is Ovechkin holding the NHL to ransom by saying he’ll play in Sochi regardless, he hasn’t said the NHL has to let him play or anything, he just said he’ll be playing, the NHL doesn’t have to let him, they can suspend him for doing it.

I am so excited. only 8 minutes
I am very intrigued by what the lines will be.
Avalanche 2009-2010: Ostensibly, the worst team in the league. Realistically, more points than the Flames and Wings. But hey, your Corsi number is better.
I agree that the Detroit writer missed the point
But I agree with him that it does affect the NHL. It is also a valid argument that these are not really “teams”, especially on teams where young kids do all the qualifying and then NHLers come in and take their spot. Whether or not that’s a bad thing… well, I haven’t quite decided. So I go with the players opinions, and since they seem to love it, I say leave them in.

I’m kind of in the same boat in that I agree with some of his points and disagree with others.
One thing that he pointed out that it used to be college age kids playing. To some degree those young players are represented in the under 18, and the Junior Championships. After a player reaches a certain age he is no longer allowed to play in those championships. Should they no longer be allowed to represent their country because of their age?
The Olympics are full of other events that have older athletes. Many of these athletes are “professionals” in that they get paid to compete in their “sport” (world circuits, and things of that nature). Either go back to all amateurs, or shut up about professionals competing (this goes for hockey, basketball, curling, soccer, skiing etc.).

Even when it was all “amatuers” though, the russians iced what amounted to a talented NHL squad. That’s what made beating them in 1980 so miraculous. Now that the most talented players from all over the world are in the NHL, prohibiting pros might actually matter. I think that the level of hockey will be better with pros though, and the give a shit level is off the charts when these guys are playing for their country.

The Olympics consists of the Best-of-the-Best from around the world.
The way it’s set up now is exactly the way it should remain.
If you’re at the top of your sport, you should be able to represent your country at the Olympics.
If they kick NHLers out of the Olympics, then Shaun White, and almost half the medalists so far should be gone as well.
They are all pros in their sport, definitely not amateurs.
