Canada Wins Gold
Not too much to say here. I'm sure everyone who cares saw this game so no need for a recap. USA and especially Ryan Miller and Zach Parise should be extremely proud of what they accomplished. And so should Canada. They were under an enormous amount of pressure to win. This was an incredibly exciting and fun hockey game. Sidney Crosby is awesome. Like him or hate him, I think he has proven that he is the best player in world right now.

As great as Rafalski was, he was perhaps played to much and the perceived weakness (quality defensive depth) of the Americnas going into the tournamenet showed today. I like the idea of having Bogosian four years from now and perhaps Cam Fowler (though he may be a bit too green).
Congrats Canada, despite what Brian Burke said, the better team did win.

Something to the effect that the better team doesn’t always win the gold medal and it was Ron Wilson who said it. I should correct that…
I don’t think it was mean spirited, but it’s something I disagree with.

As I sit here hours later, all I can think about the game is “I can’t believe how bad Rafalski played today”. He’s a great player, and overall had a great game, but my god he was awful today (and responsible for 2 Canada goals)

Hat’s off to Canada on Gold. Maybe we will let you borrow the Stanley Cup for a few days this summer.
Also, Crosby is very good but I don’t think he did anything to prove he is #1 in the world right now. Ovie is still scarier.

agreed, total defensive lapse by USA to free up Crosby on the give’n’go, but he definately had added some “clutch” to his resume after that goal and the shootout winner earlier in the tourney. What an amazing game! Worst thing we could’ve done was beat them earlier in the tourney…. that game completelyi woke up team Canada.
Had the USA not beaten Canada earlier in the tournament it is very possible that Canada gets beat in the elimination round (Slovakia almost beat them as it was). But at the same time, I also don’t know if the USA gets to the Gold medal game. Would the USA have had to play Germany and then Russia? Would Russia have played as poorly a game against the USA as they did against Canada?

I thought Crosby had a really poor tournament. It speaks to how good he is that he can have bad tourneys and still score goals like that. I’m working on a “Winners and losers” blog, and I had Crosby penciled in as a loser. Still might.

absolutely. something about Crosby just bugs me, but it’s hard to argue with they way he came through when they needed him to.
My list of losers would be topped by Ovechkin/Malkin/Semin, Broduer (this might well signify the start of his swan song), and just because they piss me off, the Ruutu’s.
I felt bad for the old man crew from Slovakia (Zednik, Palffy, Demitra, etc.), to come soooo close to knocking off Canada; also for the “have nots” from Switzerland, Germany, Latvia, etc.
On the flip side, I think I gained a bit of respect for Jagr, particularly the way he handled getting smoked by Ovechkin, maybe the greybeard has gained a bit of wisdom in his old age.
It’s not Crosby, so much as the big deal everyone makes of him. Ok it’s Crosby too. He just has an on-ice personality that’s annoying as fuck. He’s like that kid that wants everyone to like him and he tries so hard that he just comes off obnoxious as all fuck.

I think Crosby gets a lot of flak for his first year, when he was undoubtedly the biggest whiner on the ice. But he has grown up a lot over the past couple of years, complains less, and lets his on-ice play do most of his talking. Is it his fault that the NHL has made him the poster boy? No
As for Ovie, I like him, I just wish he would grow up sometimes. I think he is about as immature of a person as you can find. It makes for some entertainment, but his schtick is getting old
2009-10 Colorado Avalanche: The wheels are firmly secure thank you!
Advice to Red Wing Fans: If you don't want the reputation of being whiners, then stop whining about EVERYTHING. Your team is allowed to lose games, and when they do, it's not always because of the refs or Gary Bettman, and you seem to continuously claim
With the thing that Ovie pulled on his fan over the weekend? I like him less.

Crosby is Peyton Manning
I hate Peyton Manning. I shouldn’t. He works hard. He is a good role model. His success and resume are impressive, but he is a little . . .boring. It’s like cheering for a cyborg.
Crosby is warmer, more humble, less pissy with his teammates, but he still lacks anything interesting or surprising. Can’t he take photos in a limo with his shirt off or something? Punch a cabby? Get in an olympic bar fight? Cuss? Drink milk from a dirty glass?
I think if he did something to be non-choir boy, I’d like him more. Seriously, if he just looked in the camera one time and said, “Yes, Ovie is a great scorer, but he’s kind of an ass and somebody should draw him a map to the defensive zone” I probably wouldn’t find liking him so damn boring.
I think what made him a true loser was playing with Iginla. 3 goals vs Norway, 2 vs Germany, then didnt show up the rest of the tournament. If there was ever a guy who is just unable to mesh with anyone, it’s Iginla. Sutter has spent the last half a decade trying to find linemates who fit with Iginla but no one ever does. As a result the Calgary farm system is destroyed, I think Tanguay, Jokinen, and Cammalleri combined have cost them two first rounders and three second rounders.
Besides that one epic game with Sakic, Iginla has played with a host of great centres and wingers and the only one he’s ever been able to mesh with was Craig cheapshot Conroy.
It was Iginla who put the puck on Crosby’s stick in the fatal give-and-go for Canada. He timed his contribution well.
. . . . . What? Oh, sorry. I thought I was on a 2 hour tape delay.

Ovi’s too one dimensional to me. He’s is the hands down scariest forward/goal scorer and the most fun to watch, but how can you call him the best player? Offensive player yes, but Crosby is by far the most complete player. That Can-Russia game should’ve showed you a lot. While Ovi and Crosby were neutralized offensively, Sid was infinitely more effective and productive with his play away from the puck. Ovi is only effective when he’s in the other team’s zone with the puck on his stick.

Wow, I didn’t know Crosby hate was so strong on this blog. To be fair, I don’t like him either, but the kid was expected to be the savior of the NHL. All that pressure on a kid who is just 22 and he managed to deliver. Sure he took a lot of dives and he has earned that reputation of being a crybaby along the way but he also has a Cup and a gold metal. And that is impressive. Really we should just all be thanking our luck stars that Matt Duchene is already more mature than Sid the Kid or Ovechkin for that matter.
by Dustin Burfiend on Feb 28, 2010 10:08 PM MST reply actions
Whoa….lets not go overboard on the mature factor here….Ovi acts like a kid. There’s no way Crosby could handle that type of pressure if he wasn’t mature beyond his years. It’s amazing the way Sid handles himself.

I gotta agree that Sidney matured rather quickly and you can forget how young he was. As for gold medal pressure, it wasn’t Crosby carrying his team with it all on his shoulder.
And it still doesn’t mean he is the once every 50 years talent the media seems to think he is ;)
Never trust the lunch lady.

The Sid hate kind of bugs me, but I can see why it exists. I hate Tiger, Lebron and NASCAR for similar reasons. But the part you have to remember is that the announcers are going to continue to talk about Crosby because he’s always been good. He scored 100+ points as an 18-year-old (good luck with that, Matt); showed up in a big way in both Stanley Cup Finals runs, and now has a goal on his resume that Canadians will remember forever. What more does a guy have to do?
His first year he did whine, but he saw that criticism and has really toned it down, despite the fact that he’s captain and is supposed to get in the refs faces occasionally. Last year he was criticized for not shooting enough. This year he’s among the league-lead in goals. Last year he was criticized for his faceoffs. This year he’s among the league-lead in faceoff percentage.
Mike Babcock, the coach of the team he beat in the finals last year, picked Sidney to take multiple shots in the shootout Canada won and was given a penalty shot that Nash easily could have done. That’s not Sidney making that choice; that’s one of the most respected coaches in the game.
My hate lies squarely in the broadcast booth, because if you mute the games in which Sidney plays, you’ll see a hockey player that you’d want on your team.
BTW, I’m putting the Over/Under on the number of times we hear “Olympic Hero Sidney Crosby” during the next NBC Penguins broadcast at about 650.
Now that T.J. Galiardi has accepted me as his FB friend, can I officially say that I'm one of the cool kids?
gimme $20 on the over. GREAT point on muting the hockey game though… couldn’t agree more, and never thought of it that way

Sid the player just bugs me a little. He has toned down the whining, but it’s still there in spades, and he is still got a very unlikable “everyone please like me” factor.
But all the attention he gets from the booth amplifies the annoyance into full-blown hatred sometimes. Like my wife said during the first US-CAN game “It wouldn’t be a replay without showing us what Crosby did”.
I thought they really toned it down for the second game, and it was a lot better.

I completely agree with that. Crysby wasn’t even the Captain of Team Canada, but as much as the camera was on him you’d have thought he was.

Guys, he did score the overtime game winner. You’re expecting Mike (can’t pick me out of a lineup) Richards to get the spotlight? Remember when the Broncos won their first Super Bowl? How often did the camera leave John Elway? This treatment is nothing new in sports.
Hell, Danica Patrick gets as much attention for a 31st place finish. Tiger Woods has every shot shown, even if he’s 10 strokes back.
During the closing ceremonies, NBC spent most of the evening with the camera up Lindsey Vonn’s nose. She didn’t exactly have a great Olympics, but people could at least recognize the face. Same goes for Apolo Ohno. But how many American non-hockey fans are going to recognize another Canadian hockey player? Hell, how many people here could recognize Cory Perry’s face? At least some of the American audience may recognize Crosby.
Now that T.J. Galiardi has accepted me as his FB friend, can I officially say that I'm one of the cool kids?
Crosby wasn’t carrying the team (nobody really did for that matter), but he was carrying the media aspect of the team. That’s what I meant with his maturity and the way he carries himself with the media.
Crosby and Ovi will never be Gretzky and Lemieux, but they’re the equivalents for this hockey generation because they’re the best players in the world right now.

the real question to me is why was he playing so much after the game was tied? i get wanting him on the ice for offensive purposes, but matching him against the Crosby line in sudden death OT? really?
typical Ron Wilson. I would have had Gleason and Orpiks out there more with Suter and E. Johnson (who, btw, was tied with Doughty for 2nd best defenseman in the tourney, behind Weber).
I couldn’t agree more. Suter was good, but why was Rafalski matching up with their best player (albeit one who had been relatively quiet) after the game he had just put in.
I was a big “meh” on Gleason. Like E. Johnson a lot, and though Jack Johnson had a really solid game for the Americans yesterday too.

he did have a good gold medal game, but JMFJ (as the kings fans call him) was absolutely terrible defensively in most games prior. great offensive player and hitter though.
I’d give give my left nut to have Gleason on the Avs, hes exactly the shutdown guy with a hard shot they need. Scratch that, I’ll keep my left nut, and give them Wolski+ instead.
I’m meh on Gleason as well, but I’d take Orpik in a heartbeat.

Sidney Crosby is the best in the world???
I am sick of hearing this. Personally i wish he hadn’t scored that goal and it had been someone else because he didn’t do anything all Olympics but scores and OT goal and he’s the greatest. What ever!!!! NO Gretzky he is not!!!
Overtime Bounces
Once a game gets to sudden death, a bounce here or there makes all the difference. I’m not saying it was lucky, because it wasn’t, but if Crosby doesn’t lose the puck in the Ref’s skates on the wall, he will take the puck up toward the point and the US defense will be in better position. No goal is likely, and play continues.
Instead, the puck gets caught in the Ref’s skates and Crosby pokes it down to Iginla. Good play. Even better, he make a bee-line to the net. Better still, Iginla hits him with the return on the tape. Goal.
Once bounce, well handled, and 3 great plays.
Congratulations Canada.

Empty net desperation hockey is as good as it gets...
… for excitement, especially when it works for the good guys.
Too bad it didn’t work out in OT, but yesterday proved that NHL caliber hockey is a must in every winter Olympics.
I personally didn’t think the US had a prayer once the game went through the first 2 minutes of OT… I gave the Americans 2 minutes to capitalize on the momentum swing, and after that they were dead in the water… Its tough to forecheck two guys and pinch a third with only four guys on the ice haha. If it was 5 on 5 OT I would have been terrified, but 4 on 4? And after the first 2 minutes passed? I was just waiting to see who scored for the good guys :) Too bad it was Crosby…

What a great player. I hate the fact that I have to go back to hating this guy because he plays for the Devils.
Oh, and IMHO, Shea Weber is the best defensemen in the game now.
Now that T.J. Galiardi has accepted me as his FB friend, can I officially say that I'm one of the cool kids?
Gretzky?
I know Gretzky had an incredible sense of the ice and ability to make plays happen. Plus, the hands he had! But he was a one way player. He never back checked and he never played physical. Of course, it has been ages since I saw him play, so this is my memory of it. He did a lot for hockey at the time, but I think that this games showed that there are so many good players that you don’t have to just watch one team to be amazed (but if you watch the Avs you wil be amazed the most). That will do a lot for the game. Hopefully some of the millions that watched that were not hockey fans are now.
On another note, I thought the announcer (can’t remember who it was) did a great job of calling the line changes. That is something that I can hardly ever see when I watch a game on TV. Over all, I thought the announcers were better than any other game in tourney.
Very cool Olympic Link
