Even though I am open about my Non-Budaj love…I have openly wondered the same thing.

2009-10 Colorado Avalanche: The wheels are firmly secure thank you!

Advice to Red Wing Fans: If you don't want the reputation of being whiners, then stop whining about EVERYTHING. Your team is allowed to lose games, and when they do, it's not always because of the refs or Gary Bettman, and you seem to continuously claim

Exactly same here.

Last season one of my most used meme’s in my LJ hockey community was Boodj in a dumpster. Hardworking or not his play was ridiculously frustrating. I had little faith in him as a backup (I was hoping he’d be the one shipped out and that Raycroft would stay) but I think he’s proved himself able to take a game every now and again. I suppose it’s hard right now since every point we get counts, but I just didn’t really see a good excuse for not putting him in the Dallas game.

I think every one with even a slightly open mind has to wonder why Budaj hasn’t played more. He has been pretty good in his few starts this season (The Edmonton game aside). I have always believed that the goalies should split games when the team has a back-to-back.

It is odd

But I just can’t help thinking Sacco worries about the team fragility, being all rookies, and wants Andy while the team is young so Andy can bail the rookies out. Next year maybe he’ll pull back when they have experience.

Avalanche 2009-2010: Ostensibly, the worst team in the league. Realistically, more points than the Flames and Wings. But hey, your Corsi number is better.

by c6hor8 on Feb 4, 2010 9:58 AM MST reply actions

I think that makes a lot of sense. However, I’ve noticed that our D REALLY steps it up when Boodj is in net. I think their lack of confidence in him shows but it’s to his advantage.

by xskatebakerrx on Feb 4, 2010 9:59 AM MST up reply actions

You have to admire Budaj's professionalism and attitude.

Not only is this year a slap in the face to him by the coaching staff, but also by Anderson, who basically is running the goalie rotation. I don’t know if I would be able to maintain the professionalism he has. What I wanted for him this year was to play as a back-up goaltender and post some good stats. He has done that.

I would take Budaj over Raycroft as a back-up any day!!! I think they chose Budaj because of his attitude, and because they didn’t know whether Anderson was going to be the real deal. They didn’t want to end up with what they had last year.

Anyway, I hope Budaj finds a good team to play for and a coach that will actually play him. Best of Luck to him.

I agree wholeheartedly. Just as chivasfan has been open about his lack of love for Boods, I have been as fierce of a supporter of him as I have of my BF (seriously…look back to last year’s threads, guys). And just like Hot Pocket, I would hate to see Budaj go. But I want him to actually get to play.

The 2009-2010 Colorado Avalanche: Much more gooderer than last year.

by NurseBeachie on Feb 4, 2010 10:06 AM MST up reply actions

I would prefer Budaj stay as a backup.

He has a great rapport with Andy which is obvious when they are talking and laughing. He might get his shot as a number 1 and in that case good for him. Until that happens a great starter needs great back up support.

It may be a “slap in the face” to the fans. And while I am sure that Budaj feels slighted a bit (and rightly so)…in the NHL, this is business. And I gain respect for Budaj, because instead of being a whiny bitch about it, he understands that in the NHL, business is business…and keeps his great attitude.

Thing on my mind is

If he feels he has been shafted, even if he hides it from the public eye, he most likely won’t take a new contract. Means we lose a great back-up for nothing.

I’d hate to see him go like that.

2009-2010 Avs: Totally not about to win the Stanley Cup!

by Drakenlot on Feb 4, 2010 10:57 AM MST up reply actions

I’m going to say it at the risk of being the witch:

Andy has had more than a few nights when I’ve said out loud, “He should not be playing tonight.” And the way the team has played in front of him has made me wonder if they’ve thought the same thing. He’s looked shaky and tired. I know Sacco relies on his judgment. But a goaltenders self-judgment is not always something to trust. Case in point: How well did that kind of thing work out in the ’08 playoffs?

The 2009-2010 Colorado Avalanche: Much more gooderer than last year.

by NurseBeachie on Feb 4, 2010 10:03 AM MST reply actions

While I agree he should be played more...

Just to play devils advocate here, in looking at the stats of other goalies in the league, he seems on par with some of the GP by teams that are in the top 8 of their conference. Miller, Bryzgalov, Kiprsoff, Fleury, Brodeur, Luongo have all played around the same number, if not more, as Anderson.

by AvFab on Feb 4, 2010 10:13 AM MST reply actions

But as this has been brought up before. Outside of Brodeur, and Fleury last season, how many of those guys have carried their teams through the playoffs? It seems the goalies who play that many games in a season, struggle in the playoffs. Nabokov is a prime example of this; he’s great through out the season and then turn mediocre in the playoffs. Miller hasn’t been able to help Buffalo make a run when they are able to make the playoffs, and it goes on.

Workhorse goalies may not go deep in the playoffs – but in all honesty is going deep in the playoffs the Avs number 1 priority?

I would think that obviously making the playoffs would be the first priority and Anderson gives the Avs a better chance to do that. Hence, you play him more.

Besides, what good is rested goalie on a non-playoff team?

by HugoAgogo on Feb 4, 2010 2:18 PM MST up reply actions

I love Budaj, and really pull for him as a backup. However, I also think the new trend seems to be to ride your #1 until he’s practically dead. There also seems to be a certain number of the goalies themselves who thrive on that. Look at Vokoun, or any of the guys AvFab mentioned.

All I’m saying is that I don’t really think Sacco is making too bad a choice here. Sure on the back to back games, Budaj should be played more, but outside of that, I’m not sure. Just my thoughts.

by Mrs @ MHH on Feb 4, 2010 10:20 AM MST reply actions

I agree with you and AvFab that the new trend is to play the #1 until he’s practically dead. The only difference in the number of games Budaj has played is that most of those games have not been from a “normal” rotation, but rather because of sickness and injury to Anderson. If you take those games out of the picture, he has only played 3 in a rotation (just devil’s advocating back)

I am going to regret asking this

Does anyone have the stats for the number of games the Stanley Cup winning goalie played since the lock-out?

MA Fluery last year – 62 games
Osgood in 2007-08 – 43 games
Gigure on 2006-07 – 56 games
Ward in 2005-06 – 28 games

(I believe all of those goalies were injured at parts of the year, except Ward, who was a back-up to Martin Gerber much of the year)

The losers those years:
Osgood last year – 46 games
MA Fluery – 38 games
Emery – 58 games
Conklin/Rolloson – 18/43 games

Olympic Break

The Break has to be the main reason Boods doesn’t see ice time. Even if Sacco rides Andy right into the Olympics, he knows that Craig isn’t playing for Team USA and is going to have a whole lot of downtime to get back to 100% and ready for the seeding grind and hopefully a long playoff run.

I also tend to agree that maybe Sacco plays him to protect the rookies when they make a mistake. Holding rosters and coaching staff constant next season I would sincerely doubt Sacco would employ the same time split between the pipes.

I feel for Budaj, seems like he did well in in injury relief, so he should play once in awhile.

irony is so many ways in that piece

Who would have ever thought that Sacco’s “goalie rotation” would be even more insane than Coach Q’s, and that Q would actually come around. IMO Chicago’s got it going on, and other teams should take note.
