Kovi Romours To Rest
Incase you haven't heard, it happened last night. Kovi has gone to the Devils. (Much like I suspected, he wasnt coming to Colorado) But now we can stop hearing about it.

So my guess if the avs were in on him, then it was Svatos, Clark, pick/prospect. Can’t blame them for taking NJ’s package. Makes you wonder what everyone else was offering, probably none of the names we’ve heard. That duche Cormier going there is probably the best thing for his career, since no one there knows who he is.

I don’t think Svatos/Clark/pick would have been a legitimate offer. 2 UFAS, a potential mid-late round 1st and any prospect other than Shattenkirk wouldn’t be anywhere near enough, even as just a rental.
I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that the Avs never made a legitimate offer. We’re on the rebuild after all :p

I was honestly glad that Sherman didn’t grab Kovi.
Let’s be honest for a minute here, we can bundle Tucker/Svatos/Clark/JML etc… in any number of combinations and we all know that ATL is not going to take that trade. It would have taken someone like Wolski or Stewert along with Radar + prospect(s) + picks to bring Kovi here. I don’t think it’s wise to gamble on a 2-3 month rental player while we are in rebuild mode.

Really Bad(Corny) Hockey Joke
Do you want to know who the Devils traded to get Kovi? – Oh do ya?

Devs didn't give up too much, imo
Given what they did give up, I wish the Avs would have made a run at him. Roy knows he’d be a huge upgrade to WoWo.
And with the 32nd pick in the 2009 NHL draft, the Red Wings select: Someone other than Ryan O'Reilly. LOL@Detoilet.
Do you think they gave up too much for a rental? I can’t see him playing for Jersey next year.

Not if they win the cup

Exactly, if they win, it doesn’t matter.

I don’t believe he’ll be in NJ beyond July 1st. On the surface, the Devils didn’t give up alot, but the Devils are in the position where they have to win now. Marty isn’t getting any younger. IMO I don’t think Kovalchuk will mesh with Lemaire, time will tell, but every indication leans to him testing the market regardless of where he was dealt. NJ is willing to sacrifice those assets, the Avs were not.
When discussing this trade on HF, someone (Ensane) brought up what would be a pretty good equivalent of what the Devils gave up: Stewart, Liles, Gaunce, and a first round pick.
Liles is tricky because he has a limited no trade, but that’s ideally what the Avs would have to had given up for a rental. New Jersey is in the position where they can give up those types of assets with the risk of him walking, the Avs are not. Colorado is still rebuilding.
The Avs are better off taking a shot at him on July 1st. However, I don’t see him coming to Colorado if he is looking for one of those mega lifetime contracts. The Avs philosophy is not to go beyond five years on a contract.

I was for him coming here ...
… but now I think Kovi can go jump in a lake.
He wants league max on salary, which would make him the highest paid player in the league, despite the fact that he’s maybe the third best player on his Olympic team, much less the NHL.
The Avs can’t afford him. No team can seriously consider him a cap player and still have hopes for a Cup. He would have to be Ovechkin good on offense, a Selke candidate on defense, and a Sakic in the room to be worth that much, and he’s not even close.
Personally, I hope he and Waddell had a plan. Take some talent from N.J., then resign in the offseason with Atlanta for a realistic price with a whole new crop of talent and a team ready for many playoff runs.
If Santa comes down my chimney wearing those Red Wing colors, he's going to wish he didn't exist.
I had given this thought too. But I think the argument against that would be that Waddell publicized the amount Kovy expects for a contract, causing less of a demand for him and less of a return for a mere rental.
Although I’m not sure why he confirmed those rumors in this situation either, unless the NJ deal was basically sealed in principle beforehand…
