I just posted a fan shot from Puck Daddy…Wysh is saying the same thing. Myers or Howard for Calder, Duchene behind them at #3.

I don’t get the Jimmy Howard love. He is decent, but again, even on a bad Red Wings (worse than usual anyway) team he is playing behind some All-Star quality defense (and the forwards aren’t slouches in the defense department either).
As for Myers, I will say it again. He has been GREAT, but his mistakes aren’t as noticeable with Mill backstopping the Sabres.
The only thing hurting Duchene is his slow start…and it was only slow because those dang posts got in the way.
I don’t see how Howard is ahead of either Duchene or Myers…that’s just ludicrous. (and I will post this in MJ’s TSN rant as well.)

Meh, I can see why Howard is getting major props. Without him, the Wings are nowhere near the playoffs. He kept that damn team afloat during their injury period, and now they’re coming back with a vengeance. Hate to say it, but the Wings are fucking good again. Damn it.
IMO, this is a classic Calder race. A forward, a defenseman, and a goalie. All three of whom can legitimately nab it.
So a healthy Lidstrom, Zetterberg, and co has NOTHING to do with the Wings recent surge?

BURGUNDY ARMY...BLEEDING BURGUNDY UNTIL I DIE!!!
Not a chance, dude.
All due respect but if you think Howard should legitimately be involved in this Calder race, you’re flat wrong. I’ll give the kid his props. He hasn’t been god awful but he hasn’t even been the best rookie goaltender. He’s playing behind a considerably better team than Rask in Boston and he’s putting up worse numbers. I honestly wonder if Howard would be putting up the numbers Deslauriers is if he was stuck in Edmonton. He’s a mediocre goalie at best and Myers and Duchene are NOT mediocre.
A little rudeness and disrespect can elevate a meaningless interaction to a battle of wills and add drama to an otherwise dull day.

THIS
If any goalie has a shot, it’s Rask.
The kid is afterall, leading 3 goalie categories for rookies.
And that’s on a Boston team who stunk up the joint for half the season.

Not to take anything away from what Rask has done, but his stats certainly do not blow Howard out of the water, as some would like to imply. Rask has a SMALL lead in save percentage and GAA, while they’re win percentages are pretty close to even (edge Howard). Howard has almost double the wins Rask does (look for that to increase, too), and has been playing on a team that was just as underachieving and crappy. Howard has been playing as a legitimate starter in a tough division and a tough conference, while Rask has just been splitting time.
Howard has double Rask’s wins because Osgood sucks far more than Thomas.

To keep going. Rask has Chara and Avs castoff Boychuk in front of him. Howard has Lidstrom, Kronwall, Lilja, Rafalski, plus Datsyuk and Zetterberg. That’s one Norris vs. how many Norrises and Selkes. Howard has a definite advantage. Yes, the Things had injuries, but there were always competent defenders in front of Howard.

surprised no one has mentioned yet that Howard will be 26 in a couple weeks where as Myers and Duchene started the season as 18 and 19 year olds…as a Avalanche and Kelowna Rockets fan as long as Duchene and Myers finish 1-2 i dont really care who wins
26?
Doesn’t that make him too old for a rookie?

Think the Norris pick is even worse – Green is a scoring machine, but Keith is right up near him in points (59 to Green’s 66) and actually leads in even-strength (40 to Green’s 34), in addition to being the complete package on defense and one of the smartest players in the league. Hell, Team Canada added Brent Seabrook just because of his chemistry with Keith – that speaks volumes about how important he was to the team. Drew Doughty could also make the list (though I haven’t paid Pronger much attention this year, so maybe not).
Duchene is a strong contender for the Calder, but when you compare him to his fellow forwards and then Myers and Howard to the other defensemen and goalies in the league, it gets easier to see where the pundits are coming from. I still like Myers for top rookie myself, but it’s a close race.
Wings fans want it both ways (heh)
This is the same defense and defensive scheme that made Osgood look like a playoff hero, and now they want us to reward the default goalie who took Osgood’s place when his suckiness was so overwhelming that even all the Selkes and Norris trophies in the world couldn’t help him. Lidstrom, Zetterburg and Datsyuk have only missed 10 games among them. Franzen was a big loss, but other than that the Wings missing from injuries were bit parts.
Howard has had many chances to be the guy in Detroit and failed each time before this, but now they have no choice but to use him because they are strapped by the salary cap. Has he been good? Sure, but playing goalie for the Red Wings is like playing running back for the Broncos from 1999-2006.
Duchene is almost a point-per-game player over the last 41 games, while playing on a line with even more rookies who aren’t considered anywhere as good as him.
Acquired from Pensburgh for a first round pick and two comment posters to be named later.
