I’ve endured dallas fan, and while I personally don’t like it and wouldn’t do it myself. If that’s what those idiots want to do then that’s fine. Love the chicago cheering-pretty much everything about that is a little over the top, but no one intends disrespect, which for me would be the biggest factor.

Steve Moore’s last act as a hockey player was beating Matt Cooke’s ass, which makes him a great great person.

My personal opinion: I wish people would shut the fuck up during the Anthem. Screaming “GO WINGS” is not ok (I’ve heard it.) Screaming “FUCK THE WINGS” is also not ok, although I agree with the sentiment. Cheering is can be alright, although what Dallas does is stupid and it’s even worse that fans from other teams will boo when they say “stars” if they’re playing Dallas (this happens somewhere in California, I’d have to find the LJ thread talking about it.) I am not kidding, if I heard someone boo during the Anthem I would lose my shit.

I feel like cheering is ok, anything else is distracting at best and very disrespectful at worst. I seriously wanted to injure the douchebag yelling “GO Wings” during the anthem at the can on Mar 1st. And then there is some dude who Yells"GO Avs!" at Tuesdays game and that bothered me too, so It’s not just wings hate here.

The Stars a-holes get on my nerves…

OK, OK…WE F’N GET IT…YOU’RE THE DALLAS STARS…you don’t have to shout “STARS” during the anthem…you just look like a tool.

The Chicago one is fantastic, and is now done as a sign of respect to the military. Every game an older vet, and a current conflict vet stands out on the red carpet with the anthem singer.

Then in a TV timeout in the 2nd period, they put one current (in uniform) military member up on the jumobtron…the crowd then responds with a 2-3 minute standing ovation.

It didn’t used to be this way, but it’s morphed into it.

As for the screaming random words? That might be a tad annoying

To me, the anthem is about home and community and unity and a sense of belonging to something greater than oneself. I think these little rituals of the fans are done in that spirit. In that sense, I’m ok with the fans picking out particular words in the anthem that represent the home team. When I attend games in DC, I sing along with the anthem and shout “O” along with everyone else. At the end of the anthem, I cheer like crazy and I stand up and cheer when they introduce a service member in attendance.

I’m a hand-over-your-heart guy for anthems, but the shouting thing sounds more dumb than anti-patriotic to me

Me too. Cheer like mad-men when it’s over (and when the singer hits that incredibly difficult note) but leave it alone during the song.

I like the chicago thing. I don’t think anyone can get too upset, because they are cheering a patriotic song, and showing their support thusly. As far as it being a cheer for your team and not the anthem and nation, well, at least they aren’t booing or using that time as a chance to announce “I’m a douchebag!” to a captive audience.

For similar reasons I always cheer after “land of the free”, and after “home of the brave”. That for me has nothing to do with the team playing, and I do it at non sporting events also.

The Chicago cheering is awesome!!

At the Avs games, they always yell “OUR FLAG WAS STILL THERE!” I always think if Iwo Jima when I hear that. Kind of chokes me up.

We sit next to a guy who served in the Navy. During the Dallas game, this chick did the “Stars” thing in the middle of the song. When the song was over, he ripped her a new one. My whole family patted him on the back for that.

You know, when I lay my ass out on the line for my country, sitting in a fox hole getting fire at, bombs being dropped on me, watching my friends die in front of me, going days without sleep and food, then I think I will be in the position to judge. Until then, I will show the respect to the National Anthem I think it deserves.

I think that’s cool too. What I don’t like about the Chicago cheering is that you can’t even hear the song. What’s the point of even having it if you can’t sing it? I understand the reasoning behind it, but I still want to hear the song.

To me, it's what your cheering

In Chicago, it seems to me they are cheering for the military and the US, not the Blackhawks. So I do not see any issue.

At the Avs games when people scream “OUR FLAG WAS STILL THERE” – it’s not an Avalanche flag they are talking about. They are showing their pride for the men and women in our military. Everyone shows their pride differently, but as so long as your pride is respectful, I don’t see any issue.

Now Star fans yelling “STARS” or Flyers/Rangers/Wing fans cheering for their hockey team during the anthem is flat out disrespectful. The whole stadium is trying to honor our brave soldiers. There are no sports fans during this time. We are all proud of our wonderful soldiers. Anyone cheering for any sports team during the anthem is just being disrespectful. Once the anthem(s) are over, you can cheer for your sports team all you want. The one or two minutes of anthem singing is reserved for paying respect to our great and wonderful country.

Exactly!

Thanks You Smoky.
That is exactly what I was trying to say but couldn’t put it right. Cheering for your Flag and Your Country is absolutely acceptable. Cheering for your team, Not so much.
