Mile High Hockey End Of Season Awards
Over the next few days the Mile High Hockey team is going to be taking a close look at several of the NHL's end of season awards. We will be highlighting the ones that we feel some of the Avalanche players and coaches are in the running for, as well as all of the others.
As always, I want to hear what, you the reader, thinks. Is Matt Duchene really the odd man out in the Calder race behind Jimmy Howard and Tyler Myers? Is Joe Sacco going to take home the Jack Adams Trophy, or is it going to Dave Tippet in Phoenix? Can Craig Anderson finish his amazing season by earning himself a nomination for the Hart and Vezina Trophies? Is T.J. Galiardi's penalty killing prowess enough to earn him a nomination for the Selke Trophy as best defensive forward? Is David Koci's gentlemanly play enough to get him some strong consideration for the Lady Byng Trophy? Yeah, probably not on the last one.
Check back soon for the answers to these questions and more.

I see only two awards that are even remotely likely for the Avs. Calder for Duchene and Adams for Sacco. Duchene will have to step it up even further to put Howard and the Detroit media push in his rear-view. The Avs as a whole will need to win the Northwest for Sacco to get serious consideration for the Adams. Phoenix as a team has overcome a lot of adversity, and it will take a late season swoon on their part for Sacco to get the award.
It's all fun and games until someone blows up Detroit.
- whine * but Tippett has previous NHL experienceee… But no, I understand your point and grudgingly agree.

I agree. Phoenix had all of the low expectations of the Avs, plus a disaster of a situation with the franchise to overcome.
As for Duchene, I don’t see how anyone who watches him play can’t see that he is the top guy. Unfortunately, the stats need to speak for all those east coast guys who go to bed before the Avs play every night.

yup
the problem with any award is that it’s all about stats. no one watches tape or considers the bench/locker room impact

As has been stated a few times on these boards, Duchene should win the Calder due to the fact that he’s amazing. And, he’s amazing around fellow rookies. I have no clue how Howard is getting attention while Rask is not. Myers is good, in a few years he could be the best defenseman. But right now, he has Miller and a system that is making him look better than he really is. Duchene is leading a bunch of young guys on his team, with 3 players that were sent to the Olympics (trying to prove that the level of talent on the team is considered pretty minimal), he is responsible at both ends of the ice (the beginning of the year may have ruined his +/- stat line), and he is a very exciting player to watch. And, didn’t he just turn 19?
Sacco has done a fantastic job with this team except maybe playing Anderson too much. But, Tippett’s team is doing better in the standings and had to deal with more adversity than our Avs. Therefore, in a close call, Adams goes to Tippett (Or Babcock will get the nod because his team had to overcome so many injuries to their star players, blah blah blah).
Galiardi may be a Selke candidate in a few years. Somehow he is not getting the recognition he deserves in other NHL cities. O’Reilly may get the Selke over him. Wouldn’t that be a fun problem to have?
The whole “injury” crap in Detroit is horse shit. They didn’t want to hear anything about injuries last season when the Avs lost Stastny, Smith, and Sakic for a large number of games.
Know when it works in their “benefit” they want to talk about it. Still, they don’t have a leg to stand on because if the numbers are correct it looks like they have only 19 more man-games lost as of February.
Detroit had 286 and the Avs had 267. As the Wings are getting their players back, the Avs have again lost Salei, Yip has gone down and Jones is still out. So the gap could be closer.

The problem I see with that guys calculations is that so many of COs players are rookies that have such low cap hits that their worth isn’t properly considered. That said, the man-games lost compared to Detroit’s is fantastic, especially when you think about who Colorado has lost: Jones, Yip, Salei for long periods of time; RR, Mack for short periods…it’s not like we’ve lost peripheral players that really don’t matter. But that wouldn’t matter to Wingnuts…

I could see Andy getting a few votes for the Hart, but not the trophy

Me too, I don’t know how you could give the Vezina to anyone besides Miller though, dudes played insane all year.

Avs will be shut out
My prediction is that the Avs will be shut out come awards time. I really think Duchene deserves the Calder, but he will have to explode in order to overcome the East Coast Bias. I also think that Tippet will probably get the edge, as Phoenix was arguably in worse shape than the Avs before the season began.
An interesting tidbit that won’t surprise anyone:
