Where does Versus go from here?
I know I haven't seen Vs. in a long time - hell, since they and DirecTV started their spat - but I have just a little something to say concerning where they're at and where they want to go, and how this may concern the NHL in their future plans with NBC Universal and Comcast's merger. If you start thinking about the direction Versus is headed, well, we may just have to look at their competitor/big brother/inspiration in the family of ESPN networks. To peer further into where my brain is going, just follow the jump...
In response to the last statement, a lot of people believe the answer is no, but I have cause to disagree. With Comcast's acquisition of NBC Universal, the deep pockets of a corporate behemoth may provide Versus with the resources to be competitive in bargaining with major sports leagues over broadcast rights and coverage. Their foray into college football has certainly helped increase their credibility with the viewing public and Comcast is making no secret of its desire to break into NFL and increase their profile with the MLB (I do recall them having a stake in the MLB network, if I remember correctly).
One of the knocks on the programming on Vs. is its coverage of the "fringe" sports. They broadcast the NHL, WEC mixed martial arts league, the PBR circuit, Tour de France, and IndyCar races. These aren't giant ratings-grabbers, and get tagged as "niche" sports, but they have followings that are rabid and dedicated. And here's the kicker: just over a decade ago, all these (with the exception of WEC) were being shown on ESPN2 and two decades before on the Mothership itself.
Now, this may not come as comfort to NHL fans hoping to see the league gain greater coverage and respect, but they should take some solace into the fact that Versus cast its die with the NHL. Not long ago Versus was known as Outdoor Life Network. Once the NHL had a season with OLN under its belt, a whole rebranding effort was underway and Versus network was born. See this? Would ESPN have changed its entire identity for the NHL? I think not. Plus, ESPN is owned by Disney and that damned mouse's oversized gloved palm wrought the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim unto the NHL. They also fired Dan Patrick, and he's presenting Lord Stanley's cup this year to the Avs, so we should be happy that ESPN/ABC is no longer involved in our lives.
While I haven't seen Versus coverage of the League in months, what I've seen in the past wasn't all that bad, and was improving on a yearly basis. The Spat (as to how I will refer this horrible coverage blackout from now on) was a horrible blow to NHL's programming, but some important things may be gleaned from this debacle. I do believe that with this resolution that Versus understands its place in the world now. As it stands, they are ESPNLite, but they aren't willing to settle for that billing. They've flexed their muscles and at least shown that they want to be taken seriously as an alternative to ESPN. That's still a long way off, but then again, at one time ESPN2 wasn't carried as widely as it is now. Then again, who really gives a shit - I can see the playoffs without worry now. All is now right with the world - huzzah!

Vs
Vs has to get a nightly sports highlight show going to compete with Sportscenter. I actually think sports fans are dying for this, as Sportscenter is a tangled mess of what it used to be.
The need to highlight it as something different too. No screaming, No hyperbole. Just the highlights and analysis you want to see.
They have started with College football, but I think they need to try and get a major conference. The Pac-10 seems to be one they could get a contract with to broadcast their games. The Big 12 might be a conference who they could land a contract with too.
Getting some Baseball would be huge too. MLB already broadcasts with TBS and ESPN, but there’s a ton of baseball games on. I would think that VS could snag some games there as well.

I saw those rumblings as well. I’d probably watch it, depending on quality.

If they stick to just stats and highlights and analysis from people who didn’t just retire last year, they’ll kick SportsCenter’s ass. I haven’t purposely gone out of my way to watch SportsCenter since the Big Show with Dan Patrick and Keith Olbermann.

We’ve had to suffer years of Stuart Scott’s influence on the sports highlights. He is directly responsible for a dumbass wannabe sports highlight anchor weakly cry “…and boom goes the dynamite”.

they need to get moved up the dial to be right around espn. currently on directv espn is at 210 (-ish, they take up a block) and Versus is 600 something, you need the association, all the news sections are in a block. They’ll pick up viewers just because people are flipping around.

versus doesn't have that presence to demand that
why is espn in the 200s? espn has enough of a presence to strongarm themselves into that position. there are a whole bunch of people who have cable or satellite but don’t want espn and have to pay for that channel anyway. that’s how much mojo espn has. espn IS the jesus. and you don’t fuck with the jesus.
versus on the other hand is the 74th most watched english speaking channel in the directv lineup.
out of 80.
not including the shopping channels.
or the rsns.
It’s kind of weird here. Espn is 29 and VS is 151 on the basic digital set, but on the HD channels, VS is 716 and Espn is 720. That’s right, above the four-letter. I still haven’t gotten used to it.
On Dish Network ESPN is 140 and Versus is 151. Just about everything in between is a version of ESPN (ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPCL, ESPNWS, etc.)

They currently have such a hodge podge of programming, it is difficult to tell what they want to be. Considering that they were the Outdoor Life Network when the NHL signed the deal, then changed to versus, then changed some of their programming to align with more main stream sports, then went all rodeo for a while, it has just been impossible to tell what the hell they are. If they could add more main stream sports, like maybe college hockey, more college football (they have some), soccer, etc. and dump some of the fringe crap (like rodeo), they may start getting to where they need to go. And I agree with the above, a nightly sports highlight show would be great. Plus why not add something like NHL 2-nite? One of my favorite shows before ESPN 2 dropped it.
I hate ESPN. They don’t carry hockey. They basically don’t cover hockey. Screw them.

The weirdest is going from NHL or Bull riding directly into MMA.

where does versus go from here? right back to my non visible channel listings.
they show hardly any western conference teams (outside the central division and at min and at dal, the only teams not in the central division in the central time zone) at home. their production quality of the games themselves suck, you can’t see any other game information when the screen is all bugged out for programming not hockey related, and the only time they show hockey related programming is when a game is on.
i have no use for versus. i didn’t before hockey, i didn’t really during hockey (unless the avs were on) and frankly i would have liked to see this dispute last for another 6 months, to force the nhl off this channel and to force the channel out of business. its a bad channel of niche sports and doesn’t cover those sports very well.
the nhl needs to go to a network that will do them some justice, and forget about rights fees until they can get their own advertising rights house in order. i would rather hockey on a network like usa or tbs than on espn where they were a forgotten afterthought (if it makes any sense) when espn signed their nba deal or on that joke of a network in versus.

The NHL hierarchy
should all be made to retire to Tahiti — no, make that Easter Island! — and never set foot in a hockey arena again. And then they should have to watch Versus for any kind of sports coverage, in perpetuity. Because of Versus’ hockey coverage, and their strong-arm tactics in dealing with DirecTV, I will still not watch Versus even when I can’t get a feed for the Avs anywhere else. Nor will I ever have Comcast in my home. Sigh. Guess I’m $@%$ed if the deal with NBC goes through.
You gotta believe that with this year's team anything is possible.
Wait
Versus were strongarming DirecTV? I think there was plenty of grandstanding from both going on in that fight.
Remember, DirecTV wanted to put Versus on a premium tier so you’d have to pay even more to watch it.

OK, fair enough
It just seems weird to me to have hockey fans crying foul over a cable provider not getting away with charging them more.

We've seen this all before
Vs. is actually following the ESPN model quite closely. Remember, ESPN used to be the network of strongman competitions, professional track and field and NFL films documentaries when it started, then only made its mark when it got rights to baseball and hockey. They also forced their way into the NFL by wanting to televise the draft, where as before nobody even considered that.
Vs. right now is in the bidding for every major sport, but they didn’t have the resources. Now, with Comcast’s backing, they can make a serious play for major sports. Once that happens, they will be moved up the dial as advertising demands increase.
But be careful what you wish for when it comes to channels. Hockey is a low-ratings sport. That’s the facts. No major network will want it without constantly trying to fuck with it to improve ratings … or flip to three hours of horse race previews. I appreciate Vs. very much during the playoffs because it’s non-stop hockey. I don’t want that to change. I don’t want more analysts who think it’s their job to convince non-hockey fans that hockey is a good sport like NBC does. I want Keith Jones and Brian Engblom, not Pierre McGwire.
If Vs. goes out and gets better programming, fine. But it will likely only come at the expense of their less-popular hockey coverage.
