Oh yeah,
Interesting discussion, but I still really didn’t get any definitive answer on the subject of quality vs quantity. My guess is W vs L is the only real metric that matters here.

W vs L?

Uh oh
The dude’s last few posts have been pretty annoying. Now we’re down to all luck and having a hot goaltender. Talent and quality scoring chances are immune to the almighty Corsi!
Jibbles is an older man so you can trust what he says.

now i’m back to “shove their criticism and doubt up their asses, my beloved team, and with that lovey chip on your shoulder fucking rock the playoffs!!!” ugh. they were going to suck this year and the came out guns blazing. so the wheels were going to fall of but they didn’t. so they were going to be a bubble team but they’re not. so they’re going to get creamed in the playoffs…so don’t, boys. show em up, and be the ones kicking ass and not even bothering with names come mid-april.

Can someone explain to me why I should even remotely care about the Corsi number? Sure, if the shots were similar in quality, it could be significant, but it fails to take into effect where the shot comes from, whether or not there’s traffic, whether your goaltender s getting plowed into all night (or whether you’re playing a goalie not named Anderson).
I get that you can’t score if you don’t shoot, but saying every shot is equally a scoring chance is a load of crap, so why do I care what our Corsi number is? (I realize most of you agree we shouldn’t, but I would really like to hear some sort of explanation as to why I should even feint interest)
The idea behind the shot quality is that over the course of a season shot quality for teams will pretty much even out. There’s some debate to whether or not that’s true, and there hasn’t been a long look at offensive shooting involved.
Gabe did take a look at how defensive coaching schemes affect opponents shot quality, and there wasn’t much of a noticeable effect outside of a couple coaches (Jacques LeMaire and Ken Hitchcock).
Now, like I said in a different post, Corsi is a measurement. It’s a measure of how puck possession. The idea being that a team that possesses a puck more, will take more shots and will score more goals. As a measurement it isn’t a bad number to look at and assess how a team has been playing. It also tells whether or not a team needs to improve their play at ES.
I have ripped on it a lot, but it’s really a good metric. I just think some of the ways it’s been quoted sometimes is way over the top.

I have no issue with it being used as A metric, but when it’s used as THE metric to the detriment to trivial things like goals and wins, that’s where I have the problem. It also bothers me on a fundamental level that someone will look at a CORSI number, then look at the overall result (wins, etc.) and immediately justify a discrepancy as “luck.” Whether intentional or not, you’ve made the CORSI a luck-metric. And any metric that gives insight to luck is immediately suspect. You can’t measure randomness because if you could, it wouldn’t be random.
The Avalanche, clearly, are down with No PP.
