THN Ranks Avs #1 at Draft Table
Check out the Hockey News Future Watch 2010. They ranked the Avs #1 at the draft table. I've summarized the article below as it relates to the Avalanche. However, to get more information, you may want to pick up a copy.
**************************
The chart below represents how teams have been performing at the draft table for the past four seasons. The plus-minus figure is the amount above or below the norm for that particular team in comparison to it's NHL peers.
Overall grade
1. Colorado - ADR: 18 - Rnk: 3 (+15)
2. Atlanta - ADR: 19 - Rnk: 9 (+10)
3. NY Rangers - ADR: 13 - Rnk: 5 (+8)
4. Montreal - ADR: 23 - Rnk: 16 (+7)
5. Nashville - ADR: 20 Rnk: 14 (+6)
6. NY Islanders - ADR: 14 - Rnk 8 (+6)
...
Colorado has gone to the draft table 18th overall,on average, the past four seasons. Yet it's report card grade is third overall (below) for a difference of plus-15. That's a credit to the scouting department that has unearthed some pretty good selections (Duchene, O'Reilly, Galiardi, Shattenkirk, Stoa, Cohen, Elliot, Barrie and Gaunce).
Report card grade:
1. L.A. - grade '09: A - grade '10: A
2. St. Louis - grade '09: A- - grade: '10: A
3. Colorado - grade '09: C - grade: '10: A-
...
The report card grade shows the strength of each team's list of top 10 propects and 21-and-under NHLers, the missions statement behind Future Watch. A panel of 23 scouts - one scout from each team was invited to participate - did the grading.

Not that I don't think the Avs' drafting has been very good recently
but that’s a bit of a skewed stat, since the Avs have a full year of draft picks from the 3 spot. It’s not like they’ve drafted in the 18 spot every year and magically came up with Dutchy/Radar/Ellliott; they’ve had three years of decent drafting from mid-round and then a year of drafting from the 3 spot that produced some good prospects. Some of the other teams in that list (MTL, NYR, NSH) haven’t had that advantage.
The Avs were rated against all teams within the last four years. Do you really believe we’ve had the best advantage because of one year?
For this stat specifically, yeah.
The rankings are based on the difference between a team’s ranking of prospects and where the team drafted, on average. Last year gave the Avs a pretty good boost in terms of their prospects, but didn’t change their average all that much. That’s all I was saying.

To some degree I agree with you. Duchene throws it off somewhat. However, that was only one pick and many teams picked higher than us in all four of the rounds considered. Also, the Avs could have picked up anyone at the draft positions that they selected O’Reilly, Galliardi, Elliot, Guance, Stoa and Barrie. The pro scouts that participated in the article collectively believed the Avs did better than anybody else in the last four years and that’s huge. It’s much different than some biased reporter or blogger writing up a case for it.
The Colorado/Quebec scouting and drafting system has always been pretty damn good. The first rounders have been hit and miss, althought mostly hit,, but they’ve pulled some great talent outta the later rounds. This its the team that took Chris Drury at 72nd and Milan Hejduk at 87th overall, in the SAME year. Kamensky at 129th, Liles at 159th, Radim Vrbata (who in all fairness wasn’t great for the Avs, but always seems to get points against us, so if Wolski kills us, I blame it on the Vrbata curse) at 212th, Gusarov at 213th, Cumiskey at 222nd, Yip at 239th, David Jones 288th. All of these guys were bargains at their spot, and the Avs development program has pretty much always made me proud as well.
