Some things I loved about the 2009-2010 Avalanche Season:

  • Being there in person to give a  heartfelt goodbye to Joe Sakic, the man who captained the Avalanche through every single year of its of success and disappointment, using his quiet leadership, enduring class, and deadly wrist shot to solidify him as one of the greatest to ever play the game
  • Watching Matt Duchene, an 18-year-old boy wonder, fail to contain his excitement at being selected to play for the team he’d loved for as long as he knew there was this thing called the National Hockey League.
  • Experiencing the drama of massive firings and potential hirings and watching the organization form as the dust settled, and then wondering how the season would unfold as a result
  • Feeling the anticipation and excitement of what a bunch of rookies and sophomore players led by rookie coaches and a few veterans would do in the big, bad NHL
  • Laughing and cheering as the critics and experts and opposing teams were stunned into silence when a bunch of rookies and sophomore players led by rookie coaches and a few veterans got off to a blistering 10-1-2 start to the season
  • Watching Craig Anderson steal the hearts of Avalanche fans with his heroics in net and his humbleness off ice
  • Seeing the 32nd pick of the draft and the youngest player in Avs history, dominate in the penalty kill and constantly be a short-handed breakaway threat every time he took a shift, truly earning the name Ryan “Radar” O’Reilly for knowing where the puck would be even before his opponent did

  • Welcoming back old faces to the family: Sly, Deader, Kono, Yeller
  • Developing fun and lasting friendships with MHHers off the board and in real life, some of whom having become indispensible
  • Watching Jones become a legitimate and solid first line forward.
  • Knowing that just at the mention of his name, Chris Stewart causes immense dread in the hearts of every Blues fan in every country in the world and gives Mason and Conklin nightmares of the worst kind
  • Experiencing the joy of seeing Duchene’s first NHL goal come at the expense of the Detroit Red Wings and loving the fact that he was the hero that sent the team into the playoffs
  • Feeling impressed by the fortitude and dedication of Matt Hendricks as he worked his way through the minors, never giving up on his dream of playing in the NHL, and making every minute count when he got there, and then always being the first to stand up for his teammates when the enemy tried to push them around
  • Knowing that Joe Sacco would hold players accountable for their performance no matter what their salary grade
  • Being mesmerized by the magic Duchene created whenever he touched the puck
  • Experiencing the rush of watching Ryan Wilson destroy opposing players with hits they never saw coming, laying them out on the ice, and then looking at them as if he was saying, “Sucka.”
  • Loving every minute of the beast Galiardi became during the playoffs, knowing that he was loving every minute of it as well
  • Adoring my boyfriend for trying so hard despite the criticism and rejection and for finding it within himself to rise above it all and prove to everyone that he is the player I always knew he was
  • Watching Stastny quietly earn his $6 million dollars and be worth every penny.
  • Appreciating the spark Mueller brought to the power play, turning a passing drill into a well-tuned scoring machine
  • Feeling thankful for Hejduk’s dedication to the team shown in his willingness to pass up the honor of representing his country for probably the last chance he'll have in his life
  • Seeing Cumiskey blow past every single player on both teams leaving everyone wondering what the hell just happened as the red light is flashing in their eyes
  • Calling Quincey a Bad Mother Fucker, which made the Smyth trade sting a little less
  • Going off on tangents in MHH GDTs and coming up with new memes in the process
  • Having a half dozen usernames, going incognito with them, and convincing Hops enough that he still thought Stefka was real for months afterward
  • Continuing to laugh every time the Arnie pic comes up
  • Giggling for days after making it into the playoffs
  • Reading all of the intelligent, insightful, wacky, fun, creative posts that have overflowed MHH this year
  • Making the critics eat crow over and over and over and over and over and over again
  • Watching these kids grow up right before our eyes
  • Sitting on the edge of my seat during every nail biting second of the playoffs and feeling like we could really take the series even with key players out to injury; also loving that there was fear in the Sharks’ eyes for much of the time
  • Believing in this team when no one outside the Avs community did
  • Anticipating the awesomeness that will be next season
