Suck it Corsi: The Avalanche Make The Playoffs
The Colorado Avalanche are in the playoffs.
They didn't play a great game, they continue to look awful with the lead and Craig Anderson has been flat out terrible (tonight's shootout excluded). I care not.
The Colorado Avalanche are in the playoffs, one year after finishing with the 3rd worst record in the NHL. Nothing else matters.
The Avs can still finish anywhere between 5th and 8th and have 5 potential first round opponents (San Jose, Chicago, Vancouver, Phoenix and, although the odds are slim, Los Angeles). But that stuff is all for a later discussion. For now, YOUR Colorado Avalanche have done it. We believed, and they came through. Martha is tickled pink.

This sums up this game perfectly.
An ounce of confidence can carry you a mile toward winning. Oh, and Red Wings suck.
Although I would ad that Anderson looked excellent in the OT as well. Rest of the game (shootout included), not so much

Stewie’s still looks really patchy. Radar actually has a lot of facial hair for 19. Beards fascinate me because I am 21 and can’t grow much of one.

When I first started dating my fiance he was 21 and was completely baby faced. Over the next two years he went from nothing to being able to grow a complete beard. There is hope!
Also, I love beards and if I see Ryan Wilson with a good one I will probably die.
by xskatebakerrx on Apr 6, 2010 11:20 PM MDT up reply actions
well, there isn't hope for all of us
I have a baby face by any reasonable standards and my boyfriend has dark hair, and considerably less than I do. He’s 25 and I don’t think that a beard will be showing up any time soon… It’d be such a travesty if either of us tried to grow playoff beards. Unless maybee as Sharks fans.
09
I’m 23 and when I shave I have a baby face people say. In 4 days, full beard. It’s great. Fortunately my girlfriend loves the beard and I don’t have to shave often to impress her. I’m in LA, love the Dodgers, and got her to become a Dodger fan because of Casey Blake’s beard. She’s not a fan of hockey, but she loves hockey guys. Just have to show her the playoffs and hopefully she finds a guy to follow (she liked Mr Crosby during the Olympics)

Sakic's Beard
Never saw Sakic grow one. Will Dutchy continue to channel his idol in that way perhaps?
this will be interesting. may make Duchene less attractive for the time being. and i agree with Wilson it could put him over the edge. lol.
I have near identical hair to Duchene (though mine got a fresh cut today)
So if he grows his beard anything like I do… it’ll be a beard, but weak sauce.

Some Flames fan:
“Nucks Misconduct we will see you in the playoffs. Trolling, Trolling like we won the Cup. I will be banned the day you are eliminated”
I said it once and I will say it again.
Not only did the Avs just clinch a playoff birth, they did it against a team that has OWNED the Avs all season.
Even weirder, the collapse seemed to start after the epic fail that was the last game versus the Canucks. It started with Vancouver and it ended with Vancouver.

I met Marty McSorley about a year ago…I was wearing my Nordiques jersey, he asked if I was an Avs fan, and I said yes. He basically asked me WHAT IS GOING ON IN DENVER?! I told him I didn’t have a clue and we got into their Raycroft-Budaj goaltending situation. He basically told me that Raycroft is pretty awful. I laughed so hard.

He and I are friends. He left me a message yesterday wishing our boys luck on “the big game” and hoping they could pull it off. At the beginning of the pre-season, he commented that I should prepare myself for another ugly year. In October, when I was gushing about how good they were doing, he’d say, “Enjoy it while it lasts.” In November, he joked, “See, I told you.” In December, it was, “They’ll come back to Earth.” By January, “Damn, I guess they are pretty damn good.” In February, “Your boys are a helluva lot better than I gave them credit for. I’m betting they’re the dark horse in the playoffs.” In March, “What’s going on? They better get their shit together cuz they’re way better than they’re playing right now.” I have to call him this morning for some clinic business and I’m sure he watched the game last night. So he’ll have some awesome things to say about Duchene and some crow to eat over Liles. He’s not a big fan of my boyfriend. lol.
He’s an awesome guy..and yeah, he’s huge…but the biggest teddy bear ever.

I don’t know if this theory has been brought up, but it seems to me that he started slumping when he switched goalie masks. Maybe this new one has some bad voodoo or ju-ju or something.
Sports don't build character, they reveal it
The exact same thing happened to Nabokov when he debuted his terrible new mask with a merman on it. That bad Sharks skid started like as soon as he started wearing it, so he went back to the old one.
I’ve had that happen, although on a much smaller scale. I had my original mask and played inconsistently till my mates gave me one they bought me in Europe, played better, and then tried to use my old mask not long ago and it just felt weird and unusable, No idea why but they seem to have a strange effect on goalies.
The Savage has spoken. Let it be done

I'm just as strange
But with the t-shirt I wear underneath equipment.
I have one very old, worn shirt that I must wear (Yes, I do clean it).
It’s nothing special, just a solid dark gray t-shirt. But whenever I wear any other shirt, I’m absolute crap on the ice.
And if I wear no shirt under equipment, I get injured.
First time I didn’t wear a shirt, my collarbone was broken by being checked into the post.
Couple years later, wore no shirt again, and got a concussion after a pretty minor-looking check into the boards.
Third and final time, broke a finger blocking a shot.

I agree with Savage. Whenever I switch out a piece of gear for one reason or the other, it always feels weird and it’s a nagging thought in the back of my mind.
I’ve honestly had the same thought with Andy’s mask. I figure it musta been cracked or dented pretty good for him to switch wholesale like he did.
Hopefully a shootout shutout restores his swagger (and a couple of games off wouldn’t hurt).
The Avalanche, clearly, are down with No PP.

I was at the game
So damn tense!
there were two really crap stretches. Anyone remember that like third of a period where we weren’t even trying to chase after dumping? The Canucks didn’t look great either, but didn’t have to to keep it hovering around out blue line. Then there was the whole middle of the third. It almost gave me indigestion it was so bad. And then we turned it on and had a decent back and forth going.
It was an odd, exciting game to be at. I’m pretty sure I’d be less enthused with it if I had just watched it on TV though-the cropping on the puck would have really hilighted a lot of things that we didn’t do well without any context. I also am bad a reading play setups on TV so idk…
Andy needs to find his mojo. Early season would have been one, MAYBEE two goals. That toe save in the SO was fantastic though!
09
ALSO
not only are Canucks fans obnoxious as hell, their ‘sellout’ #301 had about one in five lower bowl seats empty. And a bunch of people filtering back from the second intermission five minutes after the puck dropped.
I was by far the loudest fan behind the benches, and I’m not a hugely vocal sports observer. I swear Andy could hear me when I yelled at him after a few of his better stops.
09
Yeah, but I had Canucks fans coming up to me tonight saying they hoped we win this game…lol

yeah, me neither
he definitely isn’t the ass-kicking, ice girl-staring, head-standing Andy from the first few months, but he’s defs not solid and there were a few REALLY close/lucky chances. Not that it’s a huge accolade, but Louongo didn’t really outplay him.
He’s actually a bit like Boods (in reliability, not style) from last year at the momnet/this game. Solid, quick, then seemingly lost, with awesome flashes. And off balance mid air ninja toe kick saves. But that second thing happens pretty rarely…

MHH invited the Leafs fans from PPP over for a game earlier this year. That 2nd period was extreme. That GDT was so heavy someone created a 2nd GDT just for the 3rd period.
Burgundy army now taking recruits.
I was bored and checked the archives
Last night’s Live thread was the most comments of any kind of thread.
Second most was this year’s Live Deadline thread (1279 to 1254)
If you combine the Game 6 vs Leafs two threads, it becomes the most with 1396. (914 + 482)
Other stats I’ve come across:
We’ve topped 1k 5 other times:
Game 62 vs Wings(1058), Game 50 vs Preds(1132), Game 47 vs Flames(1056), Game 22 vs Oilers(1033), Game 19 vs Hawks(1090), all from this season
Came within 2 comments of 1k in Game 46 vs Sabres.
Highest number of comments last season? 857 during the Draft Day thread.
Next two closest are 556 in Game 79(Lot of masochists apparently) and Deadline Day with 533.

Just watched Altitudes replay of the game
1. First, one negative. Yip looks lost. Didn’t notice much when watching live. These last few games are a good time for him to find his game again.
2. Matt Duchene made three, yeah, three great plays in OT. The pass to Hejduk, the 3 on 2 (which did lead to a Sedin breakaway that Liles was all over but still), and the potential game winning drive at the end. He wanted the win badly. I saw that killer instinct that the team needs in duchy. I hope it infects the rest of the team for the playoffs.
3. Tucker can erase all bad mojo with a strong showing in the playoffs for all I am concerned. He looked rejuvenated tonight.
4. Paul Stastny. Damn did he have a strong game. He did all the little things so well. He is not flashy, but he so solid he is worth every penny.
5. Finally. Adam Foote. His skill level is not where it used to be but I noticed that fire. His will to to win. None of us really noticed watching the game live, but he had a killer game. Tonight was the old Foote we all love. The skill is lacking, but the heart never stopped.

I watched a bunch of Battalion playoff games last year, and he had that same killer instinct.
His playoff performance was the sole reason he was touted as having a legitimate chance at #1 overall.

Now that that's done,
Can we please sit Andy for a game or two? It’d sure be nice to win a game or two once the playoffs start.

Everyone take their heart medication?
Keep it handy for the playoffs!
Liles and Duchene. Wow, just wow. For all the crap written about these two, they both played tremendous games. I would hope Liles is finally out of the doghouse with Sacco. I felt this was his best game all season. The look on D Sedin’s face when Liles poked that puck away from his was priceless!! He made 3 key saves in the game that, without, I truly think the Avs would have lost. And Duchene getting the goal in the shootout was just a boy’s fairytale come true!
I agree that Anderson looked a little off during regulation (he has really got to work on playing the puck over the summer. It’s like he has a seizure or enters the Bermuda Triangle behind the net). However, SO, totaly different story. Remember the beginning of the season when he would flop around and look completely ridiculous? Last night he was rock solid, and I really think Budaj may have a little to do with that. Altitude made a point of talking about how Budaj was talking to Andy and the shooters before the SO. I read once that Budaj said Theo taught him how to wait out and read the shooter. I think he has passed that knowledge on to Andy, because Andy has transformed his play in SO’s.
GO AVS!!!!
Colorado Avalanche: Playoffs or Golf - which will it be Boys!
Yeah, during regulation Andy just would not stay in the net!! Luckily he has no reason to come out of the net and flop about before failing to get back into position during the SO.

On Budaj
After hearing the praise he got from Footer, makes me think he will stay here.
He has a much larger influence on the team than we think.
I was afraid for most of season that he’s bottling his emotions inside about not playing, and it will end with him refusing to sign here.

Given Budaj’s character and belief system, he operates on a pretty selfless mode. I don’t think he has an ounce of prima dona in him and I don’t think he carries a lot of resentment. Maybe this is why people think he is not #1 material. If he isn’t in net, then he finds other ways to help his team in more supportive roles. And you can tell the team loves him (watch when he is in net and they win – they are very animated when they come over to congratulate him). I sure everyone knows I hope he stays – I can’t imagine the Avs finding a better back-up.
Colorado Avalanche: Playoffs or Golf - which will it be Boys!
Sooooo happy
Matty, Andy, Pauly, and Johnny Liles all had fantastic games. Great to see Matty step up when we needed him to. And Liles, wtf!?!? Can we keep him? Please? Oh, can we keep him?
Ohhhh Beachie
Where are you?? After the game that old johnny Liles had last night I figured you would be one of the first posts on here. Wake up girl and praise your man he played the best game of his career last night i hope it continues because that is the Liles we love!!!

MHH Crow Buffet
Anyway, like I was sayin’, crow is the fruit du jour. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey’s uh, crow-kabobs, crow creole, crow gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There’s pineapple crow, lemon crow, coconut crow, pepper crow, crow soup, crow stew, crow salad, crow and potatoes, crow burger, crow sandwich. That- that’s about it.

I totally forgot about that! I was like, awww Wilson really? But yeah it was pretty ridic because he completely pushed him all the way down. Then again my fiance was raging all night about the Sedins being holders and the refs not caring so I wasn’t expecting it to be called anything, haha.

The 'nucks announcers on Versus
Didn’t seem to notice, though they thought it was pretty funny on the replay, but they did do quite a bit of whining when Hannan took down someone by basically just pushing him over and then got all butt-hurt when Foote swung around and knocked someone off the puck and their feet near the goal.
They whined the whole 3rd period about how their last game had 15 penalties and (to that point) there had only been the hooking on Sedin in the first.

Love this summary from Puck Daddy
Last night also saw the end for the Anaheim Ducks (Niedermayer and Selanne, out of the playoffs in their last seasons?), the Dallas Stars (hey, nice coaching change) and most importantly the Calgary Flames, whose elimination meant that the Colorado Avalanche clincheda giant middle finger to everyone who picked them 15tha Western Conference playoff spot. Thus begins an exciting offseason in which Flames fans and media decide the proper way to gut the roster, from firing management to trading Iginla.
Giant middle finger indeed.

a couple additional thoughts
it was kind of interesting not having watched any games for 3 weeks and coming back. lots of things looked different:
Quincey, Wilson, Liles, and O’Reilly all look like different players, in a good way. All have snapped out of it. Liles and Quincey especially.
Duchene looks like he’s suddenly trying too hard again. Someone needs to tell him to keep it simple. He’s still awesome though.
Andy looked fine to me. Footer looked like he had the fire again.
Maybe I was used to it, but our defensive schemes are honestly not much better than last year. It’s the equivalent of a really tightly packed zone on basketball.

Various points
JML – had a phenomenal game. Suck it Dater.
Andy – stop walking around the back of the goal like you’re on a shopping trip with your g/f when there is an opposing player RIGHT IN FRONT. However, really good effort on the OT & SO.
Referees – it is not a “buy one, get one free” offer on penalties. Stop giving weak-ass concurrent penalties.
SoS – Overpaid?? Yeah, right. Suck it Dater.
Duchene – you rock.
That is all.
It's hard to be a saint in this city
