on the fence. this throws a wrench into any of our blue chip blue liners crackin the roster
Guess I need a new Signature..uh..Go Hawks?
yeah, could be. or it could mean one of Liles or Cumiskey is out at the draft, another very possible occurrence.
This is what I think will happen. Somebody is going to get moved during the draft.

I’m thinking a guy like Barrie, who may have hit the peak of his value with his defenseman of the year award.
Our No.1 plus Barrie and Stoa for the No. 3 pick overall?
Our No. 1 plus Cumiskey and Barrie for the No. 2 overall?
Our No. 1 plus Galiardi and Duchene for a dozen Sweedish bikini models, the Hope Diamond and a bottle of Lagavulin?

Are the Swedish bikini models going to be the team’s ice girls?

I wonder if Sherman may be so bold as to move a prospect, like Barrie – an offensive defensemen that the team has plenty of already, to New Jersey for the negotiating rights to Kovalchuk, similar to what Calgary and Florida did in swapping impeding free agent defensement Jay Bouwmeester and Jordan Leopold or what Tampa Bay did in sending a third round pick to the Penguins for Ryan Malone’s negotiating rights.

I kind of doubt we are going to get the 3rd overall away from the Panthers. I’d be on board with trying to get the 4th pick away from Columbus and going after Cam Fowler though.

Oh god yes.
A little rudeness and disrespect can elevate a meaningless interaction to a battle of wills and add drama to an otherwise dull day.

Does this mean we get to trade Wilson or Cumiskey away? I think it means we need to trade Wilson or Cumiskey.

Not so sure.
I do think it a strong possibility that we will see a Dman or two traded between now and the start of UFA though.
2009-2010 Colorado Avalanche - Much more gooderer than last year!
Dater updated the post. 1 for $1 million, with incentives.

That’s a significant discount unless the incentives are easily reachable and outlandishly priced.
If we don't get our sauce, we ain't watching the game!
How do incentives effect the salary cap?
Steve Moore’s last act as a hockey player was beating Matt Cooke’s ass, which makes him a great great person.
by An Unmitigated Disaster on May 25, 2010 2:57 PM MDT up reply actions
the deal will count as the value of the full deal until the incentive can’t be reached anymore, iirc. So if an incentive for 500k was based on 82 games, as soon as the player missed 1 game the cap hit would go down by 500k.
that’s what i remember, at least.
interesting, kinda incentive against giving them out. I would guess that if they are easily reached the incentives do not go for more than another 500 thou-1 mill.

In most years since the lockout (excluding 2008-09, I believe), teams were allowed to go ABOVE the salary cap by the amount of a player’s incentives as a sort of cap cushion. However as has been stated ,if the incentives were not reached, then they are knocked off of the cap hit for that season in a sort of “no harm, no foul” manner.
by c0nquistad0rian on May 25, 2010 5:26 PM MDT up reply actions
That's a great deal
I was all for Foote returning, and at that price, it’s really hard to argue against. He was still our best defensive defenseman last season, so to bring him back at the price is a no-brainer to me.

How about the “Summer of George?”
I’m OK with the signing, especially for that price. I still think we need to part with at least one D-man
Colorado Avalanche: Back to the playoffs!
Yep. I think “Summer of George” every time I see “Summer of Kovie” talk.
Forever grateful that Joe Sakic isn't a douche bag like Brett Favre.

This is exactly the type of deal that I was hoping Footer would get… One more year for him to play [or not, depending on his health/ ability], without spending much money on him and holding ourselves back.
This might mean that he will ride the bench for a bit to let the kids play, while still lending his leadership and experience to the locker room at large.
Thanks Joe...
Foote’s comments didn’t indicate he had any intention of signing if he wasn’t going to play. I also think it would be an incredibly awkward situation for a captain to be a healthy scratch (see Rod Brind’amour). I expect Foote to play whenever he is healthy.

Sweet! 4 Shrute Bucks FTW!

Even though I gave him $3 M, but I do really like Footer. Suck it Blue Jackets!
"Here's your dream: Matt Duchene, can he do it?... HE CAN! HE DID IT! MATT DUCHENE AND THE AVS ARE IN THE PLAYOFFS!" - Mike Haynes
Love the signing. That’s classy of Foote, and shrute shrewd of Sherman. I also like that we don’t have to default the “C” to anybody just yet. I’d like to see Duchene earn it this next year. Is that too soon??

Stazzer
or Hejduk would be my guesses for new Caps.
by Avalanche318 on May 25, 2010 10:52 PM MDT up reply actions
I dunno if Stazzer has the right personality to be captain. He already gets loads of criticism for his contract. I think SoS is the perfect Robin, Batman… meh?
Sports don't build character, they reveal it
Signing Kovi would be worth it just so Stastny doesn’t get that fairly ridiculous criticism.

I would like to see Stastny work out with Gary Roberts over the offseason and try to build up a little more speed. I can just see guys like Jones, Mueller and Duchene spouting, “Hurry up, old man!”

I’m waiting for SkateBakerWhatever to show up and comment as soon as she hears about the deal… She is not the biggest Foote fan.
Thanks Joe...
Sounds like a pretty great deal for the Avs. The incentives must be for games played, right? Maybe half a million extra if he scores a goal this year.
Maybe half a million extra if he scores a goal this year.
Nah, that can’t be it, they have to be REASONABLE incentives

He doesn’t ever have to score another one after the one he got at the end of the first period in game 6.
good, cuz he probably won’t- although I sure wish he will. I miss the days when people would say that Foote actually was an underratedly fast skater. And it was true.

Perfect deal IMO. And yes, I think Cumiskey will be traded over Liles. No that’s not just because JML is my Sweet Babboo. It’s cuz (1) his contract still makes him the hot potato, (2) down the stretch and in the playoffs he showed he could be the player they wanted him to be and I think they’ll give him the chance to prove he can keep it up and (3) he is still a veteran presence on a very rookie team.
The Philadelphia Flyers: Let's do it for Lappy, man. We'll do it for Lappy!
I'd be interested to see what we could net for Cumiskey
His speed has to be tantalizing. If the Shermanator plays it right he could probably get a team to give us a pretty fruitful return, if a team overvalues him due to that speed. I like Cumiskey, but you look at the Flyers and Hawks, and they have big defenseman. Avs need some more of that.
Sports don't build character, they reveal it
Specifically, big, mobile defenseman. Foote and Hannan are big, but fleetness is not their forte. Flyers starting 6: average height over 6’2", average weight at about 206. Hawks: avg height over 6’1", avg weight at about 202. Avs 8 potential starters next year: Foote, Hannan, Quincey, Liles, Wilson, Cumiskey, Shattenkirk, Holos. Average height 6’0" if i round up, average weight right at 200 pounds, and that is bolstered by the lumbering Foote (226 lbs) and Hannan (225 lbs). To be considered serious contenders, it think the Avs are still a ways away. Our current corps is too polarized. Either big and slow, or small and fast. We lack those in between guys. A shutdown number one guy is a nice dream too
Sports don't build character, they reveal it
Hannan (225 lbs)
Does anyone else see that and thing, “Holy shit, really???” It just doesn’t seem possible. It’s so not hobbitish.

I love this deal
Footer giving a big hometown discount, with or without bonuses. He really is a class act. I have absolutely zero issues with this re-signing. Trade Cumiskey for some behemoth on the blue line. Still, looking at the UFA list, I don’t see one standout person to fit the bill.
I don’t wanna hear no more about Souray….a locker room melanoma holdout is not what this team needs.
And of course an LW….
My opinion is worth about what you paid for it: Nothing.
I don’t believe I’ve seen any love for Souray on this board in a long, long time. I think the only people who are talking about Souray are East Coasters who remember him from a time when he had a career.

Right until Footer told him to take out the trash or he’d have to go to bed without dessert.
If we don't get our sauce, we ain't watching the game!
And told him and the kids to turn off the video games and go to bed.
I heard that when Foote tells Duchie and the kids to turn off the video games the loudest groan comes from Duchie.
He gets along well with Footer’s kids. I guess since the age difference is, what, four or five years it works out.

Capgeek.com reporting that the bonuses are worth $250k and that the contract also includes a no trade clause.
by c0nquistad0rian on May 26, 2010 11:40 AM MDT reply actions
No-trade clause seems interesting. I assume the Avs make the playoffs, but if not, you would think Foote would like one last chance by being shipped off to a contender in exchange for a 4th-round pick to help bolster the farm system of the Avs for when he comes back after his playing days are over as the Avs’ new Director of Player Development in Charge of Housing and Video Game Rationing.
"By the age of 18, the average American has witnessed 200,000 acts of violence on television, most of them occurring during Game 1 of the NHL playoff series." ~Steve Rushin
Footer’s got 2 Cups. Pretty sure that being home for dinner each night (and to make sure that Dutchy doesn’t miss his bedtime) is of greater import than a 4th rounder.
$1.25M. Yeah. That proves to me that he deserves the C. He could easily double that elsewhere.
