2010 Free Agency Live Thread

Happy Canada Day! In honor of Canada's birthday, we have this raucous live thread going. Also, it's the start of NHL free agency. But, you already knew that. It's why you're here.

For those who are new here, free agency day live threads can be a blast. And today should be a very interesting day.  The majority of MHH readers (about 2/3) think the Avalanche should be pursing Ilya Kovalchuk, but a source with the Avalanche has told Adrian Dater this won't be the case. The Avs could probably use another defenseman (Anton Volchenkov, Paul Martin and Zbynek Michalek were the three receiving the most votes in a MHH poll last week), but will the Avs spend ANY money? Are the Avalanche committed to building slowly (a tactic that no team I can think of has pulled of successfully in the age of the salary cap)...or are they still trying to keep costs at a bare minimum (the rumored Tom Preissing buyout would be an argument fort he latter). Or, is there some subterfuge involved? We'll know in a few hours.

I generally stick with the TSN trade tracker for trades. Of course, there are about a zillion twitter accounts now with breaking trade news. Dater always does a good job with breaking news on his feed. Of course, there's always Bob MacKenzie, Darren Dreger and Pierre Lebrun. There's a MHH feed too, but don't go there for breaking news...this thread is the best place for that.

We'll try to keep this main article update with moves today, but deals by the Avalanche and movement by former Avs; the only UFA the Avs are expected to retain is Matt Hendricks, and even that isn't a guarantee. Shane bids a fond farewell to our departing free agents over at Avs Talk. And Jibblescribbits has his picks for who the Avs should pursue.

I’ll be sitting here in Ghana. Luckily its a national holiday, so I have plenty of time to check in, oh, every 3 seconds or so.

Also, send some of that food and drink my way.

Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Ghana? Cool! People over there excited for tomorrow’s world cup 1/4 final?

Like you wouldn’t believe.

We went out to a local bar to watch the US – Ghana match. It was seriously one of the best sporting events of my life, and I wasn’t even at the game. Of course I have to put up with everyone giving me guff about the US loss now.

Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

This will be my first Free Agency or rather the first time I’m actively following! Any advice on specific websites, trackers, whom to follow on Twitter, etc. ?

look up. or did you want more than that?

Way ahead of you

I started yesterday as soon as Dater posted his blog. But There’s still some small glimmer of hope that PL is lying through his teeth to Dater in order to throw other teams off (even though that’s not his style at all, but it could be Sherman’s style… right? Right???).

But I fully anticipate that sliver being crushed, and want to know when the guillotine is falling.

Even though I keep saying “let’s see what they actually do” It still feels like they are being unreasonably cheap, even though nothing has happened yet. I’m still going to wait until we get close to the season, but It wouldn’t shock me to be a “near the salary floor” type team.

Maybe they are just saving the cap room for Forsberg though!

Jon McAwesome's review of the watch is hysterical.
Chuck Norris riding into the Super Bowl on the back of Godzilla and round house kicking the crowd is no where near as awesome as this priceless poon magnet. When I was just moments from sending my $100k to some needy neo-hippie help group, I stumbled onto this gem. It was like the heavens opened and Jesus himself appeared with this same watch on. I mean how can you not follow Jesus when he’s rocking a watch of this caliber. So I asked “What would Jesus do?” Jesus pimp smacked me and said “Forget those hippies, buy the watch!” I was like “HECK YEAH.”

Assistant *to* the Managing Editor, Mile High Hockey

by David Driscoll-Carignan on Jul 1, 2010 8:48 AM MDT up reply actions

Errrrrrrr

I’m a huge dork, so it was an extremely easy sell for me. It’s all about customization, really. I like having all the ability to customize the look and feel of my desktop and easy access to my most used programs. I like having email updates pop up on my desktop without having to sign in to read any of them and leaving myself notes in the morning when I wakeup. The first thing I do everyday when I roll outta bed is hop on the compy and check the news and start crackin on my To-Do List. With some of these add-ons and such, everything is right there in front of me. No more forgetting to do anything.

It’s very easy to learn to use as long as you put some time into it (I had 2 hours to kill the other day and that was about all I needed) and if you’re really into putting your stamp on everything you own, it’s really an awesome addition. Also, it’s free, which owns. Tons of user created content if you don’t feel like doing EVERYTHING on your own and most of the best designers are artists and do this kind of stuff for fun. Very high quality program.

I have decided only to watch ‘good’ shows. Of course, it kinda depends on what people think of as good, but I have only given up on a couple of shows that I started. I am currently keeping up on Treme, The Boondocks, and Justified. And I am snagging the True Bloods that air just so I have them for the future. Oh, and I think that Entourage started back up, I have to be sure to keep up with that.

by thedoctor on Jul 1, 2010 9:57 AM MDT up reply actions

that’s where I was going with that, if they sign him and a goalie (they resigned Leighton but I’m sure he’s the no 2 in their minds as they are poised to make a run at cup) they would have to dump some guys. Rumor has it even Carter may be available (he’s at 5M yr) and how nice would he look on avs. Maybe they don’t think coburn is worth the dough. He had a shitty plus/minus last year
