2010 Free Agency Live Thread
Happy Canada Day! In honor of Canada's birthday, we have this raucous live thread going. Also, it's the start of NHL free agency. But, you already knew that. It's why you're here.
For those who are new here, free agency day live threads can be a blast. And today should be a very interesting day. The majority of MHH readers (about 2/3) think the Avalanche should be pursing Ilya Kovalchuk, but a source with the Avalanche has told Adrian Dater this won't be the case. The Avs could probably use another defenseman (Anton Volchenkov, Paul Martin and Zbynek Michalek were the three receiving the most votes in a MHH poll last week), but will the Avs spend ANY money? Are the Avalanche committed to building slowly (a tactic that no team I can think of has pulled of successfully in the age of the salary cap)...or are they still trying to keep costs at a bare minimum (the rumored Tom Preissing buyout would be an argument fort he latter). Or, is there some subterfuge involved? We'll know in a few hours.
I generally stick with the TSN trade tracker for trades. Of course, there are about a zillion twitter accounts now with breaking trade news. Dater always does a good job with breaking news on his feed. Of course, there's always Bob MacKenzie, Darren Dreger and Pierre Lebrun. There's a MHH feed too, but don't go there for breaking news...this thread is the best place for that.
We'll try to keep this main article update with moves today, but deals by the Avalanche and movement by former Avs; the only UFA the Avs are expected to retain is Matt Hendricks, and even that isn't a guarantee. Shane bids a fond farewell to our departing free agents over at Avs Talk. And Jibblescribbits has his picks for who the Avs should pursue.

And away we go! After my morning air shift…I’m gonna go grab a giant sammich at Wal-Mart and a big ole Pepsi Max, and listen to TSN while trying to pay attention to the news

I’ll be sitting here in Ghana. Luckily its a national holiday, so I have plenty of time to check in, oh, every 3 seconds or so.
Also, send some of that food and drink my way.

We went out to a local bar to watch the US – Ghana match. It was seriously one of the best sporting events of my life, and I wasn’t even at the game. Of course I have to put up with everyone giving me guff about the US loss now.

Ha! Haven’t heard the “barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen” joke in a while.
Sad thing is I knew somebody who believes that’s the way things should be.
I’ve always wanted to know, do you post something, log off, let Mike log on, post, log off and then you log back on?

What time do I get to start actively being disappointed the Avs aren’t trying to sign Kovi? (i.e. what time can free agents officially start signing?)

Way ahead of you
I started yesterday as soon as Dater posted his blog. But There’s still some small glimmer of hope that PL is lying through his teeth to Dater in order to throw other teams off (even though that’s not his style at all, but it could be Sherman’s style… right? Right???).
But I fully anticipate that sliver being crushed, and want to know when the guillotine is falling.

Even though I keep saying “let’s see what they actually do” It still feels like they are being unreasonably cheap, even though nothing has happened yet. I’m still going to wait until we get close to the season, but It wouldn’t shock me to be a “near the salary floor” type team.
Maybe they are just saving the cap room for Forsberg though!

Chuck Norris riding into the Super Bowl on the back of Godzilla and round house kicking the crowd is no where near as awesome as this priceless poon magnet. When I was just moments from sending my $100k to some needy neo-hippie help group, I stumbled onto this gem. It was like the heavens opened and Jesus himself appeared with this same watch on. I mean how can you not follow Jesus when he’s rocking a watch of this caliber. So I asked “What would Jesus do?” Jesus pimp smacked me and said “Forget those hippies, buy the watch!” I was like “HECK YEAH.”

Errrrrrrr
I’m a huge dork, so it was an extremely easy sell for me. It’s all about customization, really. I like having all the ability to customize the look and feel of my desktop and easy access to my most used programs. I like having email updates pop up on my desktop without having to sign in to read any of them and leaving myself notes in the morning when I wakeup. The first thing I do everyday when I roll outta bed is hop on the compy and check the news and start crackin on my To-Do List. With some of these add-ons and such, everything is right there in front of me. No more forgetting to do anything.
It’s very easy to learn to use as long as you put some time into it (I had 2 hours to kill the other day and that was about all I needed) and if you’re really into putting your stamp on everything you own, it’s really an awesome addition. Also, it’s free, which owns. Tons of user created content if you don’t feel like doing EVERYTHING on your own and most of the best designers are artists and do this kind of stuff for fun. Very high quality program.

Oh man, what did you think of it? Its on my list. As well as Mad Men, The Brotherhood, The Tudors, True Blood… Man I could watch TV shows for the rest of the off season! Maybe thats how I should fill my time…
Thanks Joe...
Can't watch True Blood
Got through most of season 1 and tbh thought it really sucked. Bad acting, ugly leading man, too much swearing, paper thin plot…
Sorry.
My opinion is worth about what you paid for it: Nothing.
You know, I thought I’d like it for the soft core porn, but then I realized I could get all the soft core porn I want (which isn’t much, honestly) from the internet without all the stupid dialogue and lame stories about vampires.

I was amazingly mediocre in Contracts. My unfortunate situation is this: my best grades, by far, have been in Criminal Law and Business Orgs. I’d take a job as a prosecutor or a public defender but I can’t justify the pay cut. And I don’t have the overall grades to get hired by the big corporate firms. Sigh.
Mile High Hockey: Significantly better than the experts predicted, just like the Avalanche.
You can start out in government like the solicitors office. Not a progressive kind of practice though and not many people leave once they start.
Same problem here with pay: Commonwealth Attorneys (our state workhorses) start at around $36k a year. I can’t justify that in any way, considering I already make more now with a bachelor’s degree and I’ll be carrying debt from school. I have no idea how they find anybody to work for the state here.
Mile High Hockey: Significantly better than the experts predicted, just like the Avalanche.
Mike’s brother just finished a stint clerking with a federal judge in Mississippi. I don’t think he got paid very well either, but it put a feather in his cap. Then he got hired on with a firm in Hattiesburg. Don’t know exactly what kind of law they practice.
Yeah, as of right now I don’t have the grades for a clerkship. Clerks and big firm kids are all top 10%. I’m creeping higher every semester, but I still have a way to go.
Mile High Hockey: Significantly better than the experts predicted, just like the Avalanche.
I know nothing of it, but if I catch up on the show then I have some girls that get together and watch it every week. I would like to attend, even tho its not so much for the show itself. And I have heard that its pretty decent, especially in the second season.
Thanks Joe...
I thought that was only for teenaged girls who like worse acting than the Star Wars prequels

Ha! Mike would shoot me. I don’t think I could stomach the Twilight stuff. I like Sookie ‘cause she’s a woman who stands up for herself. Bella just seems like a whiner.
I saw a review this morning that summed up the Twilight series.
“The whole series is about a moron named Bella who can’t decide who she wants to lose her virginity to. The end. This movie is better than the first two, but that’s like saying you only lost one arm in that car accident, when you could have lost both.”
Help help! I'm being repressed!

This IS how I fill my time.
Not kidding, dude. I watch so many shows, almost all of them terrible, that it gets overwhelming.
A little rudeness and disrespect can elevate a meaningless interaction to a battle of wills and add drama to an otherwise dull day.
I have decided only to watch ‘good’ shows. Of course, it kinda depends on what people think of as good, but I have only given up on a couple of shows that I started. I am currently keeping up on Treme, The Boondocks, and Justified. And I am snagging the True Bloods that air just so I have them for the future. Oh, and I think that Entourage started back up, I have to be sure to keep up with that.
Thanks Joe...
Well, I’ve never seen the show, and I live in Louisville, which is pretty different than the rest of Kentucky. So I’m probably no help.

Yup. Very pro-Justified. I love how its mostly Deadwood, except in modern-day Kentucky.
Thanks Joe...
exactly…. I miss Deadwood….
I saw a biography show the other day that said Ed O’Neill (Married with Children) was originally up for the role of Sweringen but he wasn’t interested. Thank GOD he didn’t get it and it went to Ian McShane.
I always found myself cursing alot more after watching an episode of Deadwood…. weird huh?

That’s true, but think of your guests. Having to take off work and everything could be a hassle. (mom off) Of course ours was 3 hours away from where all our guests lived, so we didn’t really consider them either.
Once you realize how much money you are spending on what’s essentially a 4-5 hour party, screw the guests.

why a trade? why wouldn’t they justb sign him since he’s a UFA?
by hockeyexpert on Jul 1, 2010 9:50 AM MDT up reply actions
good question…. McKenzie didn’t mention anything about re-signing him. maybe they did a sign and trade?
that would make philly move coburn I bet, Avs should go after him regardless. They have cap issues already so somebody would be on the move if they sign him.
by hockeyexpert on Jul 1, 2010 9:54 AM MDT up reply actions
Coburn must be asking for > 4m, because Mez makes 4m. This move seems crazy to me from Philly’s perspective. Don’t they need a goalie?
that’s where I was going with that, if they sign him and a goalie (they resigned Leighton but I’m sure he’s the no 2 in their minds as they are poised to make a run at cup) they would have to dump some guys. Rumor has it even Carter may be available (he’s at 5M yr) and how nice would he look on avs. Maybe they don’t think coburn is worth the dough. He had a shitty plus/minus last year

Mez is under contract for a long time…?
I don’t understand this from Philly’s perspective. Mez is overpaid.
