i think things are going really well. there is still a ton of cap space for signing the young players over the next 2-3 years. the team is still very young and will hopefully build on the chemistry both on the ice and in the locker room that seemingly developed last year. looks like the young defensemen will get to play big roles in lake erie and get the first call-ups. none of the veterans from last year outside of foote were brought back.
the only downside i see is that it appears that lake erie will not be overly competitive.
as far as the quincey contract, the way i see it is that as along as you are not up against the cap, there is not much damage a 2yr contract can do. so if he is horrible, then there will only be 2 yrs of it.
I agree
Even though I want Kovie. Or Parise. And Lou Lamoriello’s head on a platter. Either way, I want that last one.
"Andrew Raycroft - Much like Martin Brodeur (chip shot off glass) and Rick DiPietro (quick outlet pass from behind net), has developed his own trademark play for clearing the zone: 'faceoff at center ice'." - Down Goes Brown
I know from a COL point of view...
many are not happy the Avs haven’t dipped their toe deep into big $ free agency. I think that time will eventually come but those moves may happen via trade. At least BMF and Winnik (sorry…too new, nickname will have to wait or be earned) have their contracts done. Next up: CGDS, Ferris and Yipper.
From the LEM/Cleveland perspective though I am happy the Avs are trying to put a winner on the ice for us. Van Der Gulik has been good for 40+ points and 50+ PIM’s a year with Omaha/Quad City/Abbotsford. Talbot will be/should be good for 25ish goals, Mauldin is OK though I’m not a huge fan. He always got under my skin as a fan when he played for Syracuse when we had the Barons. He should be good for 25-40 points, depending where he is played. Liffiton should be able to chip in 20 or so points and provide some toughness on the back end.
I disagree with dt’s statement that LE won’t be overly competitive next year. To me, the guys they just signed are a way more physical bunch than what we watched by and large last year. Lake Erie had to be one of the smallest teams (I think we were the AHL’s version of Montreal!) and our tough guy (Bordeleau) never seemed to be as tough as he needed to be. Not to mention the fact he was hurt a lot.
I think this is a positive step in the way our opponents look at us when they see that game coming up on the schedule. Not factoring too much in, I figure the roster is looking like this for us so far:
Stoa – Porter – Olver
Mercier – Talbot – Z. Cohen
Reed – Fritsche – Carman
Van Der Gulik – Dupuis – Mauldin
Spares:
Macias? (he played a little at forward at the tail end of last year)
?
Defense:
Holos – C. Cohen
Gawryletz – Gaunce
Montgomery – Chouinard
Spares:
Shattenkirk?
Preissing (has he been bought out yet?)
Macias?
Liffiton
Goaltender:
Bacashihua
Grahame
Cann
I think Cash is still a solid prospect and although I’m not thrilled with Grahame being back, he is a veteran who has won a Calder and Stanley Cup. If his off season conditioning is taken seriously, he could prove valuable here. If nothing else but to light a fire under Cann. All of these guys are seasoned AHL veterans. With the exception of Grahame, Mauldin is the oldest at 28…
I imagine we have seen the last of the Brian Willsie era and will also be bidding goodbye to Brett Skinner, Brian Fahey, Wes O’Neill, Derek Peltier, Josh Aspenlind, Patrick Bordeleau, Brock Bradford, Matt Ford, David Marshall and Tyler Weiman.
Additional depth will no doubt be added later for whomever our ECHL affiliate is. Good luck wherever you land next year guys…
Still relatively new at this so flame away!
Thanks
I haven’t really paid attention to LEM but it’s interesting to see where everyone will line-up. I’ve seen the college boys play (ie Stoa and Mercier, Cohen and Capt Kirk). I remember Mercier being very good in the face-off circle and a great forechecker. I would imagine him in the Center role. But then again, I didn’t watch last year and don’t know anything about Talbot. Also, even though Stoa may be slow, the puck always finds him. From watching him in LEM last year, would you agree with this? Slow but always has the puck or is always in the right place.

Thanks again for the LEM view Robby.
Can’t say that I paid a lot of attention to where they were skating last year, but kind of surprised to see both Stoa & Mercier on the wing as they were both centermen in NCAA. Is that where they played mostly in LEM last year?
Am I the only one to thought that COL/LEM actually signed a guy named Maudlin? That would be one of the more unfortunate surnames around.
Hope you don’t have your heart set on Holos. IMO, he likely has the best chance to make the big club and stick next year. Though if that happens, you’ll get a lot of excitement out of Shattenkirk!

Hmmm,
OK. The (admittedly few) games that I saw them in were at C and the background stuff I remember seeing said C.
Then again, you forgot more in the last 10 seconds about Avs prospects than I’ll likely ever know, so…

Always good to hear reports from the monsters. I think I have seen a whole two LE games in the time they have been an Av’s affiliate and those were this past season on NHL Network. Wish I could see more….

Appreciate the LEM report robby. Keep ’em coming. If Stan keeps sitting on his wallet the LEMs may become a much better entertainment value someday.

Does anyone know if Sherm knows it’s july? Maybe his calander is off and he’s calling shennigans on the other teams.

so the longer this kovie signing drags out do you think it’s more likely he’ll drop his price or go to the KHL?

Or does Snow become the only GM that would actually pay him what he wants and some how convinces him to play on the island?

or maybe the thought of playing for the Islanders scares Kovy into acceping a lower offer, with say, perhaps a Denver based franchise… dreams happily
How much do we need to spend
in order to hit the salary cap floor? Are we already there?
not quite there, about 7 million below I think. It will depend on how much Muller and Stewart gets paid on wether we get there or not, possibly Yip too I guess, but cant imagine more than a mil for him.
Yeah, between those three, stewart is obviously going to get the most. Mueller will definitely make more than he made last year, but he won’t get a BIG raise. And you’re totally right about Yip, too. I don’t see him making too much more than a mil for him either. Still plenty of room for KOVIE!!!!!! (yes, still healthily in denial)
whats the
deal with muller? are the av’s resigning him. i haven’t herd anything about contract talks
i know stewart is a giving but any news on muller?
I’m pretty sure they will be signing Yip, Stewart and Mueller in the near future.

Kovalchuk
I know it’s hackneyed, but Kovalchoke is an earned nickname. Do you remember him in the Olympics on what should have been a torunament-dominating Ovie-Geno-Kovie combination? Me neither. And in the single playoff game he’s ever won in his career? Not really a ‘sakic or forsberg at their most expensive’ quality of performance, I don’t think…
Killing it in the regular season is fun and all, but I’m biased towards the Drurys of the league. I want good effort, solid performance, and AT LEAST 110% when it matters. (Again with the tired expressions…)
I say pass because though he’s horrendously skilled, he can’t really harness it in a truly useful way.
09
example
I’d rather someone like Bobby Ryan than Oveckin. Less high profile, and close enough performance that it doesn’t matter. oh, and you can afford another top six player with the difference (assuming BR isn’t as insane as the Ducks paint him?)
09
I really don’t see any cost to try to get Bobby Ryan this year, if all we have to give up is draft picks in 2011 and a third in 2012. The 2011 Draft will be the weakest in a long while. I say grab a guy that will help the franchise, the odds that 2011 draft wont produce a big difference maker.
yeah
I mean, he’s basically worth $5 mil AND it’s not like our next year first draft pick will suddenly start producing 30+ goals. Plus I THINK we’re decently stocked on pivots to help wingers make the best of things…
that said, it blows my mind that a guy about a year older than me thinks that job security and $25 million is scoffable. And things like the Rangers offering #19 something stupid like $20 Million for two years makes me want to punch somethings. Kinda bad form, even before this CBA.
09
Just curious
We are below cap floor by 7 millions. I’m pretty sure that Mueller, Yip and Stewart will get around 9 millions combined. But, what happens if we don’t reach cap floor?
I highly doubt those 3 will make a combined 9 million. They might not even make the 7 we need to get to the floor. Stewart will likely get around 3.5, Mueller 2.5 to 3 and Yip 1.5 at the most.
it’s not allowed. You have to sign someone to get above the floor.
MHH- A drinking site with a hockey problem
Detroit Sucks
imagine… Kovie will not sign with any NHL team and they will punish him for that and us for being below cap and will make us sign him.. *dreamz
Bettman’s own words were something like there are no penalties for being above the cap because I would never allow it. I imagine if the Avs are too far below the cap floor he’ll make us trade for Sheldon Souray.

NHL.com no longer showing Preissing with the Avs’ logo. Pretty sure that means the buyout is complete, though we won’t hear from Team Kroenke on that point until April next.

Ugh
Rumor across Twitter and ek is the Avs may very well be in on Kovie. So when should we add the remaining 20+ teams to the hunt?
Even so angry as to chastise his treasured friend Eklund for having dared to float the idea.

Why dater admits to that I’ll never know.
I know my name is spelled "Luxury Yacht" but it's actually pronounced Throatwarbler Mangrove.

i like dater too
but that’s probably i’m a doom and gloom kind of guy too, i’m constantly trying to reverse jinx things.
I like Dater
He’s a nice contrast to the painted on smiles and thumbs up of the Avs organization. They kinda even each other out in a way. Plus I don’t follow his twitter or live blogging… so manage to avoid most of the negative stuff anyway.
Kovie
euroflyers
Ilya Kovalchuk has offers from the Kings, Flyers, Avalanche and SKA of the KHL. All offers from the NHL are similar according to his agent.
This is according to his agent. can we believe any of that?
Could be trying to bluff the kings by naming a team with cap room n stanley cup final appearance (flyguys) and a team with cap room, tons of potential and same conference (us.)

I don’t think his agent can legally lie about this.

Perhaps. But mentioning the Avs out of thin air makes no sense unless there is something to it.

I’m interested in how the Flyers would go to make this work. I’m guessing it means Gagne is on his way out?
Sandie
"We called him Clark Kent because away from the rink, he was just a nerd. Then he'd go into the Colorado dressing room and put on his Avs jersey, and all of a sudden he was Super Joe"- Theo Fleury
Yeah, I had heard that… but if they get Kovie so that’ll mean that they’ll want prospects or picks because they’d need the cap room.

I’d be happy to take Carter off the Flyers hands. 40 goals a year, far less drama.

Kovie is just like you; he puts his pants on…one leg at a time.
Except that once his pants are on, he scores 40 goals a year.

Hell,
he probably would score 35 with no pants!

you know
all this “avs in on kovy” talk may be BS, but this is quite a bit of smoke for there to not be a fire of some sort. I wonder what’s going on…
I will believe it when Kovalchuk is at a presser wearing a blue avalanche jersey. For 7M I’m actually on the Kovalchuk boat now.
same here….
there was a randomly odd comment on Eklunds blog (I know, I know), which had no reference to a source or anything, but it’s on the internet, so it must be true…. “teams have been told Kovalchuk has decided on his destination..so they are turning to Frolov now.” (not a direct quote, had to fix some spelling). Likely rubbish with everything else on that site.
What would you guys think about Gagne? He has concussion problems like half the team already, but he’s comparable to Patrick Sharp. He is probably a little better than Sharp, except for the injury part. Flyers fans love him, he kills penalties, is a four-time 30 goal scorer, back-checks, and never takes a shift off. It’s a salary dump so he might come cheap too, they need a puck-moving defenseman as well. Maybe Cumiskey + 2nd or a 3rd (2011) for him.
