Monday Open Thread
Maybe my creative juices are sapped after Wolski week, or maybe all of my focus is on my upcoming vacation (taking the family to Washington DC later this week). Either way, I've got pretty much nothing for all of you dullards valued readers. So, talk about the Avs, talk about hockey, talk about pretty much anything other than politics and religion. And when the Kovalchuk decision comes down today, you can talk about that too, even if it will have absolutely no impact on the Avs.
Oh, and the NHL.com review of the Avs exhilerating offseason is up, in case anyone needs a refresher on the flurry of moves the team made this summer.

Hi guys,
my first post at MHH after months of creepy lurking. I can’t put my excitement into words so I’ll use a picture:

Nice name...
Is it wrong that I just watched an American Pie marathon?

I guess that depends. Are any of them after the first one any good?

Yes
Have only seen the first 3. 1 was great, 2 was a definite dip in quality but the third was a return to form. Stifler, you have something in your teeth!
Can’t say it’s highbrow entertainment, but there are a few gross-out jokes which make you laugh, regardless.
My opinion is worth about what you paid for it: Nothing.
there are 6? really?

7, actually.
4 – Band Camp
5 – The Naked Mile
6 – Beta House
7 – The Book Of Love
I’m glad I didn’t watch the last ones, look at those ratings.
Oh, I just watched the first three…

Does anyone else...
…find themselves becoming a complete, obsessive creep while you scrounge for any hint of something relating to the Avalanche this offseason? I swear I’ve been bouncing through a set of a few hockey sites ALL DAY (everyday) just hoping something new will have come up for me to devour. It’s absolutely pathetic…I first noticed I might have a problem when my roommate (not a sports fan, in general) asked what I was watching on my computer. I told him “highlights from a game”. He then asked “Oh, is your team doing well?” I replied, “Yeah…well, they were. This is from last season…The season hasn’t started yet, well, I guess neither has the preseason. I’m watching this in anticipation of the preseason.” I received a look of disgust I will never forget.

I’ve been reading on how Joey Hishon did at Canada’s Red vs White training camp… and how the camp went in general.

Eh, it just makes the Wings older. Modano had the dream end to his career last year in Dallas. But then, he started wavering, and I knew he was coming back
Help help! I'm being repressed!
I don’t see Modano making the Wings appreciably better, and he’s taking a roster spot from an up-and-coming youngster. It’s all good from my perspective.

I was surprised by the amount of words in that article you linked to DDC. Seriously, they could have just gone with a short and sweet: “Nothing to see here.” and been just as accurate.

Let the new season begin already!!!
They have injuries on the Broncos? Tim Tebow isn’t laying hands and healing the infirm?

Is Tim Tebow a faith healer or something? How is he supposed to heal a torn pec or other very serious injuries? Does he have a medical degree? I guess I just don’t understand the comment.

Well, I’ve posted it on Twitter and I’ll recap here.
Last week I saw Joe Sacco at The players Bench on County Line. The kids working behind the counter tried to get him to talk some Avalanche hockey. He has a policy of not talking about the Avs team during the offseason. Sacco is seriously old school. Was in to get his kids skates sharpened I think.
Yesterday I was at Ted’s Montana grille and Adam Deadmarsh sat next to us. Unbelievably, he’s even bigger… Quiet guy too.
Um, my beer league team beat the “Avaholics” last night in the first round of the playoffs. I’m a big enough fan that I actually had mixed emotions about it.
Can’t find a damned video of the U20 Canadian camp at all to see the four Avs prospects that skated.
No doubt it’s August. I hate August.
Do you mean the Red vs White stuff. If so you can youtube Steve Dangle he has some stuff on it. He is a fan who blogged his way into making money off the Leafs and he got invited to the training camp. It’s quite humorous. But he doesn’t have a ton of info…

Sacco sounds like a massive, gigantic, fucking tool
Last week I saw Joe Sacco at The players Bench on County Line. The kids working behind the counter tried to get him to talk some Avalanche hockey. He has a policy of not talking about the Avs team during the offseason.
Seriously? He’s the head coach of a team that desperately needs all the positive PR it can get, and he won’t banter with young hockey fans about his team? Sounds like a Grade A dick. He’s in Denver, for fucks sake, it’s not like he’s in Toronto or Montreal where people actually give a shit about hockey and might bug him often…he lives in FUCKING DENVER! He’s lucky the kids at Players Bench weren’t talking about the Broncos practice at Invesco that probably outdrew your team’s average attendance this season. Talk about your sport, you fucking grouch, you can do it in 2 minutes and put a smile on these kids’ faces and give them a good story to tell their friends.
Fucking jackwad.

But please, tell us what you really think? I wouldn’t come down so hard on him, as I think he’s just more of a reserved and quiet guy, but agree that it wouldn’t hurt to talk to fans.

When my son and I were at the Avs training facility last season, my son had a cool collectible helmet he was having all the players sign. When Sacco drove out, he ran up to get his signature. Sacco refused to roll his window down or stop. He gave my son this sort of half-ass wave and left. Sounds like he hasn’t changed much.
2009-2010 Colorado Avalanche: Now with Playoff Goodness!
I totally understand Sacco’s actions. I mean, he’s Joe Sacco — likely the greatest hockey player and coach to ever live — trying to just live his life in the most hockey-mad town in the world with the most demanding fans. The man can’t go anywhere in the world without being recognized and hounded for autographs and photos and DNA samples. I imagine the 24/7 attention and constant hassle with the paparazzi has him on edge. I mean, the man can’t even go into his backyard without the helicopters snapping photographs of him. In other words …
Leave Joe Alone!!
"Half the game is mental; the other half is being mental." -- Jim McKenny
I agree
Is Sacco scared one of these kids might get a scoop on the team and blow the Avs’ strategy for the coming season?
For Roy’s sake, these kids will always remember being snubbed by the coach of their beloved hockey team. It wouldn’t kill Sacco to chat a little bit about the team. Who knows, maybe those kids won’t now pester their parents for season tickets because Sacco is such a prick.
My opinion is worth about what you paid for it: Nothing.
Meanwhile, here in the States…the NHL Network will be showing the 2001 Game 7 Cup Final tomorrow night (7 Central I believe)…
I watched the 1996 Game 4 over the weekend (was on last week) and commented to my wife several times about how much players were able to get away with back then. I counted over 40 plays (and finally gave up) that would have been penalties over the last few years. Forsberg and Foote alone would have racked up about 3 majors a piece. As would have Mellanby on the Panthers.
I’ll be interested to see the difference between the 1996 game, the 2001 game, and a game today. Sometimes you forget about that kind of thing
Help help! I'm being repressed!
Thanks to Wolski ...
… I was able to take a nice weeklong break from hockey talk and hockey-related events. I believe it was day two of Wolski Week that I realized it was time to step back and re-evaluate my life.
Instead of reading about Wolski, I was able to go camping, do some mountain biking, visit a hot springs, do some lake fishing, experiment with bacon-wrapped Italian sausage in my spaghetti sauce, then return home to download the new Castlevania game.
All in all, I can thank not being interested in Wolski for a fun-filled week that has provided memories for a lifetime. Thank you, Stan K, because it was your lack of activity that allowed this week of nothing so that I could create a week of something.
I believe this is where someone is supposed to post, “Cool story, bro.”

Cool story, bro.
Full of lies, damn lies, but cool nonetheless.
Big ups.
If we don't get our sauce, we ain't watching the game!
Heh. OK, you caught me. I had a planned vacation that just happened to coincide with the lamest week of MHH in my near-year here.
And wrapping Italian sausage in bacon, grilling it up, then dicing it and putting it into a marinara sauce should be our No. 1 draft pick next year. It’s that good, and any scout who disagrees is a vegetarian who can’t be trusted.
Which reminds me, will we be having a Brett Clark Week next summer? I’m thinking of taking a cruise and need to figure out the timing.

First Timer
After lurking for the entirety of last season, I decided to finally join the fray here. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and skating with the majority of the Avalanche (not recently, but past players; I skated with most of their 2001 Cup Team), and played goalie for the University of Northern Colorado. Hockey is in my blood, so it’s time I use my English degree to contribute to a blog.
The Avs have been an absolutely snooze-fest this off-season, and it’s really irking me, but not worrying me. They proved last season that they have a formula, and they’re sticking to it, much to the chagrin of the common fan. I guess we just have to get over the days of the huge signings that were the trademark of the Avs organization. Still though, how are we ever going to reach the cap floor with this current mindset?

I would assume its too late now. But just because the arbitrator stopped this one, it just means that the Devs [and other teams] will just make their contracts slightly less ridiculous. Not much will change unless theres some kind of rule change on how salaries are assessed on a yearly basis.
Thanks Joe...
