SBN Mock Draft: Avalanche Protected List is Revealed
The results are in. After months...er, days of heated...er, lukewarm debate we here at Mile High Hockey have put together a protected list for tomorrow's Mock Expansion Draft James Mirtle and Corsican Gabe Desjardins will be acting as GMs for the Nordiques and Jets respectively and will be drafting their teams tomorrow.
Here is the official, fake Mile High Hockey protected list:
Goalie (1): Craig Anderson
Defense (5): Kyle Cumiskey, Scott Hannan, John-Michael Liles, Kyle Quincey, Ryan Wilson
Forwards (9): Matt Duchene, Milan Hejduk, T.J. Galiardi, David Jones, Cody McLeod, Peter Mueller, Ryan O'Reilly, Paul Stastny, Chris Stewart
This means the following players are unprotected:
Goalies: Peter Budaj, John Grahame
Defense: Adam Foote
Forwards: David Koci, Kevin Porter, Daniel Winnik
The voting was interesting. In the forward poll, voters clearly circled the wagons and chose to protect longer-tenured players over new arrivals Kevin Porter and Daniel Winnick but chose to leave team captain and Adam Foote unprotected. Winnick is an especially interesting choice as the Avalanche just acquired him this summer. His exclusion essentially means the Avalanche traded a 4th round pick to protect Cody McLeod.
I believe the two teams will be unveiled next Tuesday, so stay tuned to SBNation to see the exciting conclusion

For our next “mock” exercise, can we pretend that we had a front office that cared this offseason?

Pretty sure that Foote was left unprotected because he’s 300 years old and only an idiot would draft him.
Is it hockey season yet?

Leaving Winnik Unprotected
I realized that I voted to leave Winnik unprotected because I don’t even know him yet and therefore have no attachment to him thus far. He didn’t mean much to me.

Not bad
The Foote choice surprises me. Though I can’t imagine he’d get picked, it is interesting.
There's a place out west where the Powder River rolls off the Bighorn Mountains. It's a land of red walls, blue sky, and clean air, where the eagle glides high above the canyons and makes its nest in the rocks that overlook the valleys where the sagebrush and cottonwoods grow. This is ranch country - has been for more than a hundred years.
Well things have changed some since the early days, but there's still a thread of character and tradition that runs true from one generation to the next. You can see it in the way folks out here set a horse; you can hear it in the way they talk. And when the work's all done, there's nothing they like better than to get together at the one room schoolhouse under the red wall for another down home, homegrown, Western Saturday night.
Thank you
It’s not original. It’s the opening of a Chris LeDoux song, “Homegrown Western Saturday Night”.

Winnik and Foote will be the ones drafted, I think.

I would think we’d lose Porter before Winnik, but Hockey GM’s act in unpredictable ways!

Is this like previous expansion drafts where there’s a max number of players taken from one team?
