Avalanche Make First Cuts

The Avalanche today cut down their roster to 41 players. Most notable on the list is Justin Mercier who reportedly did not have a very good camp. 9 of the 15 cuts are headed to Lake Erie

Additionally, 5 players have been returned to their Junior teams.

Finally, Joey Hishon is out for another week with his hand injury and has returned to his junior team (Owen Sound)

Surprised by this one a bit. He looked pretty decent to me last night.

The Avs are under the cap floor, and others laugh at them, but when the Tornado comes, they'll be the only safe ones.

Any guess why Patrick Bordeleau is still with the team? The club already has a fighter/thug in Koci, and Bordeleau is on an AHL contractl.

could be to give him a longer look, could be because they still need warm bodies

This still doesn’t make any sense. Koci is not on a 2-way contract; he’s not going anywhere. Bordeleau is not a great skater, so I don’t buy the warm body thing. They’d have dump Koci to Erie through waivers and get Bordeleau signed to a NHL contract. I’m not a fan of the “designated thug rule” in the NHL, so I guess it dosn’t really matter, but the anal retentive part of me wants an explanation.

I wonder if there’s an attitude about not risking Top 6 guys in the preseason and using these skating meat bags to fill the time.

they wanted to give him an extended look at NHL caliber talent

Because Cann is AHL and those two are still CHL

better to get a longer look now at a viable professional for this year and let the youngsters get to their teams’ camps

This guy is 23. Good size, but it doesn’t seem the club is too high on him if he isn’t getting more of a look.

He played a month at LEM last season after finishing his career at Boston University (aka. Avs East). I too would have thought a longer look, given his camp play, was the next step. But what do we know. ;-)

by niwotsblessing on Sep 21, 2010 11:13 AM MDT up reply actions

I think your point is valid, but I think we also have to remember “normal” defensemen (those not named Drew Doughty or Tyler Myers) take longer to develop. Greg DeVries didn’t really become an NHL player until he was about 27.

Nice to see Sky Walker sticking around

Does he make LE or go for the championship with Portland? Interesting situation seeing that LE may be short on natural RW

by zandar on Sep 21, 2010 12:04 PM MDT reply actions

I was wondering who was going to say something about the Sky Walker still hanging around. Lets just hope he continues to use the force!!!

Let the new season begin already!!!

by BryceLeo on Sep 21, 2010 12:13 PM MDT up reply actions

i’m thinking he goes back to Portland but at least this gives him a chance to get a long look as to what he brings. I would think the Avs would only put him in LE if they felt he might bring something to that team’s top lines or as a call-up for the Avs. Seeing as that is unlikely (especially due to LE overall depth at forward), he probably gets cut after the stretch of games this week.

by zandar on Sep 21, 2010 1:03 PM MDT up reply actions

selfishly i hope he goes back to Portland so i can see some future Avs (Walker and Ruta-what’s-his-name) in town. Not to mention when they play Seattle (Pickard).
