Preseason Game 2 Recap: Kings 4 Avalanche 2
The Los Angeles Kings knocked off the Avalanche last night, dropping the Avs to 1-1 in games that don't matter. As with all Avalanche preseason games, this one was heavily marketed by not showing it on TV which makes these recaps a little difficult. From the box score and event summary it appears to have been a chippy affair, with two fights (David Koci vs Kevin Westgarth and Cameron Gaunce vs Jordan Nolan) and Adam Foote tangled with John Zeiler (the guy who gave him a concussion last year), getting a elbowing and roughing penalty in the skirmish. In all, the Avs had 14 penalties and gave the Kings 7 powerplay opportunities.
For the Avalanche Philippe Dupuis and Kyle Quincey were the goal scorers (Quincey also had an assist), while Michael Handzus, Jason Williams, Zeiler and former Avalanche Brad Richardson scored for the Kings. Richardson's was the game winner. Craig Anderson allowed 1 goal on 18 shots and John Grahame allowed 3 on 24.
This is the 2nd straight game that the Avs were at a severe shot disadvantage. These games don't count...but being outshot by a 76-41 margin in the first two games is not exactly comforting.
The Avalanche are in action again on Friday when they visit the Dallas Stars.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say Grahame won’t be getting the backup job this season.

Well, he is 100 years old.
Oh, he’s 35. Four years older than me. Sigh.
Mile High Hockey: Significantly better than the experts predicted, just like the Avalanche.
It varies widely. Ray Bourque was still just 25 in hockey years when he was 40 in real years.
Grahame, on the other hand, is 35 in real years but 100 in hockey years.

In hockey years, 35 is almost old enough to play for the Red Wings.

Yeah, I caught the 950 feed last night. After years of listening to the Avs radio on the computer from FL and IL, it felt so odd having it on an actual radio.

I was at the game last night (we scored some amazing free tickets!) and the husband and I had some observations:
Andy- Looked good. The guys definitely played a little better while he was out there, but Andy was definitely on top of his game. Still looks shaky outside the net- not sure that will ever change.
Grahame- I thought he looked terrible. The goals he let in weren’t the softest ones I’ve ever seen, but they weren’t great. I could tell that he was nervous the entire time he was on the ice.
Our first and second lines- Oh, they were out there last night? Didn’t even notice them. Especially Duchene- it was a little worrisome.
Dupuis- I was really impressed with this guy, he definitely wants to seal a spot on the team. I felt like every time I saw someone actually taking shots at the net it was #11.
Gaunce- Not the most talented guy, but boy was he working his butt off trying to be physical. He got some good hits in, and had a great fight against Nolan who shamefully wouldn’t take off his helmet/ visor.
Maudlin- Great hustle, I was really surprised to see that he only ended up with 2 SOG. He also looked like he was trying.
Elliott- Terrible. Time to cut this guy for sure.
Holos- He also looked pretty bad. I had high hopes for this guy and I don’t think he’s going to deliver. :/
Koci- LOL. He got rocked by that Westgarth SO BAD. If anyone other than Koci getting embarrassed that bad I’ve have been ashamed, but because it was Koci I was just amused.
Foote- Oh. my. god. Foote looked horrible. He was painfully slow, and constantly looked like he just wasn’t paying attention. I think he made 2 helpful plays throughout the entire game. I mean, yeah I enjoyed seeing him getting all chippy with that Zeiler tool (that guy was running his mouth all night)- especially after I learned what their history was- but the fights and the hits aside (and the hits weren’t too spectacular) I cringed every time he was out on the ice.
Pepsi Center mini doughnuts- Still delicious.
what about McLeod – looks like he had a a few hits and a few shots.

Oh yeah I forgot about Highlander! He was sort of in the middle- not invisible but not working as hard as some of the guys out there looking for secure spots on the team. He was playing pretty physical which I love, he looked like he was itching to just beat the hell out of someone. I wish he had taken Koci’s place because I know he’d have done a better job, haha.

Bubs and I were at the game too (scored some cheap tickets) and though I agree with a lot of what bakes said, I had a different take on some of the guys…
Andy – agreed
Grahame – every goal was stoppable. The first one was within a minute or so of him getting in net and you could feel the deflation of energy of the guys. It’s like they gave up almost as soon as he was there. They have zero confidence in him. People thought that about Boods last year, that the team didn’t think they could trust Budaj to back them. No. Last night was what it feels like…crazy energy shift.
First and second lines – Although they weren’t clicking together the way I’d hope they would be, individuals were showing moments that made me giddy. Stewart is already looking like CGDS. Some Kings player (can’t remember who) pushed Stewie after the whistle was blown and he was PISSED. Turned around and just started wailing on the guy. The guy turtled, of course, and Stewart went down on him and threw an extra punch and some choice words I’m sure for good measure. He also showed his speed and his tricky wrist shot, which are still beautiful to behold. (We were sitting right above the goal in Avs attack twice zone, great angle). Duchene – he was having some trouble holding on to the puck doing his sleek moves, things he did without thinking last year. I would be willing to bet he’s using new sticks. Watching him, his problems with the puck all seem to be related to that – adjusting to a new stick. Having been there, I know how frustrating that can be. Anyone know how to find that out? What I DID like is how much stronger on the puck he is. Remember last year how guys would breathe on him and he’d fall off the puck and say, “Here, you can have it” ? Not this year. It’s more like, “Bitch, get your own damn lunch money.” He’s also jumping into the scrums to pull guys off and keep others out of them AND barking at guys who are getting in his face. I think we’ll see a much more aggressive Dutchy out there this year. Mueller? Mueller?
Dupuis – Agreed. I’ve always been a huge Porter fan, but he was nowhere last night. Dupuis made him obsolete.
Guance – Aside from the fight and some physical play, he was defensively terrible. Out of position, bad turnovers, seemed overwhelmed with the pace of the game. The fight came after a series of particularly bad shifts and was probably a “look boss, I’m good at this!” statement. I will be surprised if he’s not on the next list sent down.
Mauldin – Agreed….for the second half of game. Felt he was invisible for first half.
Elliott – Could not agree more more more. Ugh. How he stayed when Travis and his inflatable pool was sent down is beyond me.
Holos – Started out well but disappeared or had bad plays as the night wore on, which surprises me as he’s supposed to be such a minute crunching warrior. He still is fantastic at tying up his man so his teammate can get the puck and move it out of the zone. His PP skills are terrible, though. And his PK positioning is even worse. 5-on-5 he does well IMO. I don’t think he will get that 7th spot, though. He needs time to adjust to the tight quarters of an NHL rink, especially in those special teams situations. He will be very good once he does. Look for him to be an early call up.
Koci – FABULOUS!!! He really is getting good at getting his face in the way of people’s fists. The worst part about this fight was that it shifted the momentum to the Kings and the Avs never got it back. I’ve no idea why they fought, even. It was totally random.
Foote – What was up with him? He was a grumpy old man last night! I actually liked it, personally. I don’t like that the team had to go on the kill so much, but Footer setting the tone of “Don’t mess with my team” from the get go was nice to see. But now reading the history, it was probably more the personal score to settle angle. Still, I don’t think he looked horrible. Slow, definitely. But that’s Foote. I think his play was negatively affected by his linemate. He was playing with Guance who was all over the place defensively. The two of them just weren’t working.
McLeod – I feel like Highlander might be reigned in a little bit. There were so many classic Cody opportunities last night for him to chirp and poke and be the classic pest, but he was pretty mellow about all that, doing a bit here and there, but nowhere near the Highlander we know. Not sure what that’s about.

The Beyond the Sword and other expansions for Civ IV are a lot of fun too if you haven’t played them.
I am really liking Civ V so far though. It’s been simplified in a lot of ways. Less nuances to manage, i.e. tax rates, simplified city management ,etc. But I really like that they’ve gotten rid of army stacks and only allow one fighting-unit per tile. It up’s the strategy required by a long-shot.

My husband and I were looking at purchasing preseason tickets ourselves and couldn’t believe that they weren’t much cheaper than regular season tickets. The prices on our tickets from last night were $120 each! I love watching the Avalanche, preseason or not I’m willing to shell out some money to see them, but charging full price for preseason tickets is a scam.

I was there too… Got some super cheap seats directly behind Avs’ bench.
The guy that Stewart took down was Zeiler again. Guy is such a jerk.
Duchene looked like he might be overthinking things a bit. He definitely plays more physical than last year and I think that is part of what he’s adjusting too. I think he’ll be even more amazing with a little more time.
I thought Quincey had some moments of serious badassery last night, especially offensively. There was a time on one of our powerplays where he WOULD NOT let the Kings clear the puck. That said… I’m still pretty sure we didn’t score on that one.
McLeod was talking trash to Bernier all night… especially in the second period. Bernier came out of his net twice that I noticed almost looking like he would fight McLeod. That would have been amazing.

Pretty sure that was Zeiller. Still not sure how Stewie got a roughing penalty on that and Zeiller got nothing (though hard to see through the radio). That was when Stastny was being called for a delayed penalty, so the Kings got a 5 on 3.

Powerplay DISadvantage. Kings 11 PP’s, Avs 4. That said, the Avs killed all but 1 of them. That’s decent
As for Foote (in Skatebaker’s review)…sounds like he had a score to settle. Let’s see how he is in the next game or two. (Though I would never doubt that he has Skrastin’s like cement feet)
Help help! I'm being repressed!
On the penalties: there was a bit of San-Jose-playoff-itis going on last night. Some ridiculously borderline calls on the Avs and blatantly missed ones on the Kings. Quincey gets shoved into Bernier? Goaltender interference. Foote stands near a guy? Interference. Oh, but the guy gets called for diving too. How can it be both?? I’ve never understood that. Stastny Is reaching for the puck with his stick, the guy skates into his stick and falls down. Tripping….even tho SoS didn’t even move his stick towards the guy at all. Oh, and that’s when the Kings player starts shoving Stewie, Stewie takes him down, and he gets a roughing penalty. The Kings player? Surely he gets roughing too because whenever you do that shit after the whistle the new rules state it’s an automatic two minutes! Nope, nada. 5 on 3. I’m not blaming the loss on the refs – no, it’s Grahame’s fault – but the officiating was horrid. Blatant offside calls missed. Too many men calls missed. Terrible.

I think there’s still a small percentage of teams broadcasting preseason games.

I made a count of this the other day based on the schedule at NHL.com. It appears that at least 11 teams are broadcasting at least one preseason game on TV.
Colorado Avalanche Offseason Strategy - Please wake us in October
I had 1/3 in my head, so that sounds about right

Clearly this is a league-wide conspiracy against our team. Now we know how Detroit fans feel.
Mile High Hockey: Significantly better than the experts predicted, just like the Avalanche.
Saw part of the Ottawa-Toronto game last night. In fact at one point I was listening to the Avs and watching the Sens-Leafs…(they were showing the game on tape delayed I think)

i was at the game too..
and I agree with what everyone was saying about the players. I thought Gaunce looked pretty nervous out there and got bailed out by Andy a lot but he really endeared himself with that fight. You could tell that he wasn’t all that used to fighting (at least in the NHL) but he held his own and the crowd (all of the 10 people there) got really behind him. The game was extremely chippy especially because of the Zeiler. I really wanted to someone to cream him but he turtled when footer when after him and when stewie went after him. of course when he was skating after getting attacked by stewie he challenged the avs bench….
one of the things i loved the most was that players were really starting to stick up for each. when koci assumed his role a punching bag..i mean enforcer… it was really cool to see highlander skate right up the fight and tap his stick on this ice edging koci on. i was on the upper deck and you could hear mcleod yelling at koci to kick his ass.
all in all the game was pretty fun. mauldin showed a lot of spark and i too was surprised he only had two shots on goal. to me gaunce looks like he will be a really good addition with some seasoning (and of course a killer nickname). holos needs some time in the ahl but once he adjusts more to the north american game he will be a good addition to our team as well. o and never put grahame in net again….

agreed. there was no hesitation with this. our guys were all over anyone that messed with their teammates. and the stick taps and encouragements were loud and enthusiastic both during fights and as the players came out of the box. it was great to see.

Can’t find video but the Avs website put out a photo galley of the game. The Stewie / #13 pick is to die for. Hell, even the pic of Koci makes him look mean (less kitten-like).
Matt Duchene, better at being Pavel Datsyuk than Pavel Datsyuk!
You know, the depressing thing is that Grahme said in an interview after the game that he felt like he was playing well. I’d hate to see what it’s like when he’s playing bad…

Dear Colorado Avalanche: Thank you for the excitement, see you in October.
When was the last time you heard a prospect say he played like shit?

Getting outshot consistently worries me
We overcame it last season thanks to Andy, but I don’t know if we can expect lightning to strike twice. We need to find some offense.
Avs seriously outshot the Stars…FYI
