Preseason Game 5 Recap: Avalanche 2 Stars 1
The Avalanche defeated the Stars 2-1 last night with Peter Budaj bettering former Avalanche Andrew Raycroft between the pipes. It's the last home game of the preseason; the next time the Avs will be in Denver will be opening night on October 7th. (And the next time after that will be the MHH After Hours game, for which discounted tickets are available)
As for the game, Paul Stastny scored both goals for the Avalanche, one being the first Avalanche PP goal of the preseason. Patrick Bordeleau had yet another fight. Jonas Holos had no PP ice time while Colby Cohen had over 5 minutes. Ryan Stoa didn't register a shot on net and Mark Olver had 4 shots. Kyle Cumiskey had 23 minutes of (presumably) blazing fast ice time in his preseason debut.

No highlights to be found anywhere, but the Stars website has a nice Ice Girls feature on the front page.
I thought it was pretty Osgood to take a Bertuzzi behind the Draper, but it ended up blowing the Abdelkader of my Kronwall.
We should tie a rope around Cumiskey and put the the other end around Stoa. Nothing bad could come of that.

My new work desktop wallpaper. Don’t mess with my computer or it’s the Bordeleau…of BLOOD!

I saw that picture and thought, “ROUND ONE…. FIGHT!!!” (using my Mortal Kombat voice)
FINISH HIM!!!

Is it just me or does Segal look scared? And like he’s thinking to himself, “Oh shit, don’t let a rookie beat the crap out of you!”

You’re giving Koci too much credit. “Thinking” would suggest a brain.

If everything people are saying about this Bordeleau guy is true, Koci needs to be gone. He;’s definitely got the look (although Koci does too).
mostly negative value, maybe someone would claim him on waivers.

So how does that work. If Bordello works out does anyone think we will waive Koci?
If we do, other teams can pick him up for his current salary, or he can get sent down if not claimed. Am I right?
It's all about the A(bsurd marketing ideas)!
yes, I think the avs would buy his contract from the monsters, put Koci on waivers and let him get claimed, or then send him down if he isn’t. He’d be subject to the 1/2 price on reentry waivers coming back up if the avs needed him for any reason and I could see some teams taking him then.

Plus,
it would help the Avs make the cap floor!

Colorado Avalanche Offseason Strategy - Please wake us in October
Good to see another tic mark in the W column. I was getting worried there (for no reason, obviously, since this is the preseason, but you know).
Mile High Hockey: Significantly better than the experts predicted, just like the Avalanche.
I was sort of worried about the offense, to be honest. But it seems like its coming together pretty well.
Thanks Joe...
I’m still worried about the powerplay. I imagine it’ll be a theme this season…
If we don't get our sauce, we ain't watching the game!

A few comments about last night's game
Yip looked fantastic last night. He took a Duchene pass into the crease and worked Raycroft over before Stastny was able to finish off the play. His second assist was a perfect pass to Stastny on the wide side of the net that Paul tipped in. No goalie in the league could have stopped that play.
Cohen was matched up with Liles (who also played well) and contributed some very solid minutes. I think the guy has a decent chance of making the team, he looks like an NHL defenseman out there.
Budaj didn’t face very many shots, and none of them were particularly difficult stops. It was a surprisingly strong defensive effort last night.

yeah, I mentioned Cohen and Holos ice time above as I think it’s relevant to this battle. Shattenkirk didn’t play, which I think is also relevant (as in, he may be already in). If Cohen and Holos are battling for the last D spot, Cohen may have an edge right now. Then again, the Avs may just go with 7 D and they’ll both go down.

I was disappointed that Shattenkirk didn't play last night.
I had mixed feelings about him after Sunday and wanted more time to form an opinion. Holos has yet to impress me, however. I would put money on him being sent down.

I wore my jersey yesterday while going out to meet my friend Jed.
Apparently if you wear a jersey on a game night the entire city will assume you were there and 600 people will ask you what the score was. Fun tip there

That surprises me quite a bit. I thought Shattenkirk was the front-runner.
The Avs are under the cap floor, and others laugh at them, but when the Tornado comes, they'll be the only safe ones.

Well, gosh, if you had actually watched the games you’d know that Shattenkirk wasn’t even considered at all. Duh.
What is that? You say you couldn’t watch those games because they weren’t televised? Oh, pish posh.

conversation with my son a couple of nights ago
I was watching a pre-season game on NHL channel and my son comes into the room.
Son:“Hey Mom, how come they aren’t showing any of the pre-season Avs games on t.v?”
Mom: “Because the owner of the Avs doesn’t want to spend the money to have them televised.”
Son: “So what you are telling me is that the owner just wants to keep all the money in his own pockets?”
Mom: “Yep, that’s about right.”
Son: “He sucks!”

Sarcasm aside, it is ridiculous they were charging full price for pre-season games. I would’ve gone had tickets been cheaper and the would have at least made a little money off of me instead of none.

Like I said in the FanShot this is not surprising…from all the recaps it just sounded like he wasn’t quite comfortable with the NHL game yet. I have a feeling he will be up at some point this year though (safe prediction I’m sure)
I thought it was pretty Osgood to take a Bertuzzi behind the Draper, but it ended up blowing the Abdelkader of my Kronwall.
Cumiskey’s speed is definitely back. On one play he took the puck from behind the net and skated up ice and ended up in front of the other 9 players on the ice. Unfortunately, it didn’t result in a great scoring opportunity, but I can understand a little rust with this being his first pre-season game. At least he hasn’t lost a step to his speed, which is an essential part of his game. He should be able to shake off some of that rust over the next couple of games and be ready for regular season action next week.
I was pleasantly surprised about how good the ice was, it was a record high in denver and they didn’t have that dallas 1999 era ice.
